What i like about the Satiator that I realised is when you load the satiator it boots for a second into the media player menu, then loads the game and i initially thought.. id miss out on being able to play the audio from the media menu (the spaceship flying round to the level 1 theme of virtua cop haha). But say you load a game from the satiator, if you press the open button on the saturn itself to open the tray it will take you to the initial media player menu and if you close the lid the saturn still thinks that the same disc is still loaded, so you can listen to the music or those "warning!" tracks. or then go back into the game as you normally would. this is brilliant for me because its one of those mods that still maintain that level of nostalgia and things for the most part are completely unchanged. another thing to mention is that i found images of the old sega flash demos and these for some reason wouldnt load onto the mednafen etc but on the satiator they loaded without issue!

The Saitator is a great product. I think the reason my system kept the game image in memory when opened the Saturn lid is because my system was modded to do disc swaps. But if you do the pad reset by pressing ABC and Start in any game, you'll eventually go back to the CD playing screen. From here you'll be able to play the music from games without opening the CD lid.

Prices on the hardware have definitely jumped, but the software is getting ridiculous... That said, with such great ODE options finally available, I would definitely recommend people check out probably the most underappreciated (in the West) console of all time.

I did have one in the early 00s. But I no longer have one. So this is just gravy for me as well lol Edit: only thing I didnt like about Saturn was having to replace that battery and lose all my saves every so often. I wasnt even aware of the memory cart. But since all my saves would get lost by replacing the battery was a reason I kept ps1 and didnt keep saturn. I miss it though

This is incredible Mark!! Thanx for sharing this, I've never heard of the product before. Much more appealing than taking out the cd drive and replacing it with an sd reader. I don't typically take interest in modding my consoles for things like this but since it just plugs into the video cd slot (I don't have one to use anyways) I just might pick one of these up.

I still have my original Saturn from early 1997 (switched to play Japanese games, since most of the good Saturn games are Japan-only), and this would be an excellent way to mod the system without risking the Saturn's innards. Thanks for making me aware of the device!

@@RetroCore I paid the hefty UPS Express (was 4€ more then regular UPS) for 47€ and got the custom surprise of another 140€ (including 12€ service fee from UPS) After I swallowed that and I had my first game running I decided it was worth it. My Snatcher came with a ccd and sub file, works fine on the Satiator. Can recommend if the price isn´t to painful.

Got mine yesterday shipped super fast. Was able to easily flash my AR to work with it and it was a breeze to setup. What I like about it is it still allows me to play my original discs if I want. Sure it doesn’t support disc swapping and a couple of game have issues but other than that works great. Considering the pace of updates I’m sure these issues will be ironed out as time goes on.

Yeah, support is amazing on this. I ddo like terraonion products and I also have a GDEMU in one of my Dreamcasts but I think the Saitator is way better than the mode simply because it's pure plug'n play and I can keen my disc drive in the console.

I just started messing with mine yesterday and it is well worth it! I am curious what cables you are using to connect to an HD? I am hooked up to a crt using retro vision s video cables. They work fine, but several of the games have a scrambled screen, thankfully just during loading. Loving playing light gun games again!

I'm using RGB. I've been a user of RGB since the late 80s thanks to being brought up in the UK. This Hi-Saturn is connected to a G-scart box (Japanese pin out spec) which has about 5 other consoles also connected to it. The G-scart box is connected to a Framemeister which in turn is connected to the 4K screen via HDMI. I have all audio no matter what the source coming via a Denon 7.1 cinema amp.

I use RGB from the Saturn to a Framemeister, then HDMI from the Framemeister to the TV. I have the Framemeister set to 720p because my TV is a 4K screen. 720p to 4K is a nice straight upscale.

Great review, Mark. I know the Satiator has been in development for quite a while, so it's good to see that it's up for general purchase now. Do you know if there are any restrictions on which Saturn models it works with? I know the Rhea/Fenrir/Phoebe etc are for 20 or 21 pin models and not both. Both my main Saturn and my backup console are 21-pin units. I'm sure it's cheaper to use a Phoebe or even a MODE with my backup and leave my original unit stock, but I do really like the idea of an optical-drive emulator that doesn't replace the stock ODD.

The Saitator works in every retail Saturn and will also boot any region game on any Saturn. It is expensive but also the easiest to use, keeps the original drive and works with all Ram and ROM carts too.

I've considered replacing a lot of my consoles disc drives with solid state devices..as replacing aging parts becomes difficult and expensive as time goes on. I just love that original feel. A Dreamcast doesn't feel right if you can't feel "It thinking."

That's a good idea. I already have a GDEMU in one of my Dreamcasts and to be honest it is a pain because I need to have two Dreamcast units set up. One for GDRoms and one with the GDEMU. With the Saitator just one console does both jobs.

I would definitely like to get one of those. My Saturn doesn't read a lot of my discs anymore, either it's out of alignment or the laser's dying, not sure which. This would be a nice option to allow me to play my games without needing to replace or fix it. Didn't know about the kickstarter though. No problem. Games on more than one disc use save data once the first disc is done. All you do is play as normal but instead of inserting a new disc, you just load up the 2nd disc file. Every multiple disc game works this way.

Yes, they work. Just like using a normal CD. Double CD games always save from the last point in the previous disc. So you just load up the next image just like inserting another disc.

I used RGB going in to a Framemeister. The Framemeister is outputting a 720p signal via HDMI to my 4K screen. 720p scales to 4K far better than 1080p does.

Nice video! I just received mine today and it works perfectly. Do you know if there is a way to go back to the Satiator menu without powering off the console? If I press the reset button or ABC + Start, it comes back to the Saturn menu or restart the game. I have to boot the console everytime if I want to select another game.

It still uses the traditional memory or save cart but there is a utility that allows you to copy saves from the Saturn to the card.

Great video but a word about inserting the battery at 5:23. NEVER touch the battery with bare hands. It's not going to break the saturn but it drastically reduces the life of the battery. Use gloves or a tissue to handle the battery and it will last you years.

This popped up in my subscriptions since I'm subscribed, but I'm not sure if this will pop up for people searching for information about the device, as it's misspelled. It's Satiator, not Satinator, and I assume that the name is supposed to be based on the word satiate. Thanks for posting this, in either case. I've received mine already, but I haven't opened it, as I intend to do that FRAM mod beforehand and am still waiting for the FRAM module to arrive. I thankfully already have plenty of CR2032 batteries, and I still want the current time on my Saturn, but I hate the risk of losing my save files.

I seen custom hardware (both cartridge and consoles) for retro systems, but this a huge step for nostalgia Saturn gaming. Though it got me thinking... Discs are changed just like you would with a normal Saturn. Every multiple disc Saturn game saves before switching disc. So simply power off the system and boot the next disc image. The game will continue as normal.

Yep, mode is cheaper and I do like TerraOnion products. I have the Mega SD from them. But for me, having a real CD drive in my Saturn is very important because I own hundreds of original Japanese Saturn games including all the MPEG exclusive titles. So for me, the Saitator is the one to get. Saves having to Saturn's set up. I made that mistake with the GDEMU for Dreamcast 😕.

Sure, you need to install a 3rd party program on to the Satiator but once that is done you can move saves from internal memory to SD card.

Yep, it is full region free. It boots any rom on any Saturn. The only thing it can't do is make pal Saturn consoles run on 60htz.

Nope, it doesn't. For that game you'll need to burn a CD but there's no harm in that. I've owned two video CD cards (one shown in this video) since 1995 and how often are they used? Next to never.

Yes, it is compatible with all cartridges, be that Ram, ROM or Action Replay.

I also have done a review and a versus with the Rhea, it is faster with satiator for the loadings. Also very interesting thing is that it also works with the Hi Saturn Navi ! However I still don’t know how I can make it work with my super prologue 21 ( a Denon card doesn’t let you fit the card in the mpeg slot..)

It may not be possible to run it on the Prologue 21 but then again there probably only a handfull of people who would even want to try that.

@@RetroCore i will find a way for the prologue. For sure the prologue 21 isn’t famous neither easy to use or to buy from Japan ( heavy as hell as you already knows). The only Saturn that I can’t try is the SGX from Sanseibu 😔( I don’t have it)

I don't remember. I bought it the first day public sales went live. I did pay 2000 yen import fees but Japan has low import fees so you may pay more depending on where you live.

That extra jingle on opening the CD player for Sega Saturn is different than the North American release. It's better.

I know 😁. The PAL and US Saturn's have horrible sound effects. My Hi-Saturn has a different boot sound than the normal Japanese Saturn and V-Saturn but even those sound better than the US and PAL model. No idea why they changed the boot sound and sound effects. The sound effects on the Hi-Saturn are the same as all other Japanese Saturn models.

Why there are no full screen? Have you got 60 Hertz?

Yes, it is 60htz but it doesn't fill the screen because I'm using a 4K screen via an upscale unit. I could make it full screen but then the scale isn't correct and shimmering will appear on the image. Best to search the net about interger scalining to understand why the image doesn't fill up the whole screen.

@@RetroCore i have first RHEA, its excellent time. Bootleg china hardware is good and cheap, like Aliexpres GD-EMU. I Have first oryginal Deunan Knute ODE, but several is 0% diffrence to China bootleg. Cheers
