I paused the vid, played a 3 note arpeggio with a big leap to a higher target tone and descended the scale to the next target. Sounded like music. : ) Thanks for the tip! Also, great groove on the Satin Doll.

excellent video as always. Great things to THINK about, but once we get playing, as you said, all rules are meant to be broken. making sense, taking controlled chances, going somewhere, and ending up somewhere

Hi Kent, wonderful swinging stuff. On your 1st lick your 1st target tone was the #11 of G7, then you surrounded the 3rd of G7, then #11 of A7 to the 3rd of A7….is there a lesson on melodic minor in there?
@KentHewittpiano882 жыл бұрын
I have scale lessons if you go to my playlists. But it's more a lesson on bebop approach tones.

I noticed something you said in how you think of the melody in relation to the chord you’re on that sounded like maybe it’s better than what I’m doing. I was thinking of all melody notes in terms of C, so like the first two notes I think “ok, 6 5 6 5, then 7 6 7 6” etc. and that’s how I transpose to different keys. But you said “ok it’s 5 4 5 4 of D minor, then 5 4 5 4 of the 3 chord” etc. have you found that’s a better way to look at melodies than the way I am? Because the way I do it I end up with lots of exceptions to the rule since they key can change in the piece. Maybe I just answered my own question…but I already typed it all out on my phone and don’t want to delete it…

Hi Rick, you can do it either way. However relating the melody to the specific chord you're playing is better, because you can see the similarities in the patterns. In sequences you can see that the shape of the melodic line is the same, but just transposed to fit the specific chord or chord progression. Often in analyzing a chord progression we relate it to the tonic key ...hence we have things like V of V, or V of III...or modulating to VI Major.
