ABOUT THE ALARM CLOCK
In this video I will be restoring a Vintage West German Alarm Clock. I bought this clock on eBay from a seller in Pennsylvania. I was looking for something unique to restore that would challenge me.
After doing some research on the internet I was able to find out that this Alarm Clock was manufactured by a company called "ad*lf Jerger K.G." who made travel clocks and alarm clocks since 1905 and went out of business in early 1995.
ABOUT THE RESTORATION
This was my second official restoration. The disassembly went along pretty smoothly, until I noticed that the clock wasn't made out of brass but brass coated steel. My original plan was to polish the brass parts but then I had to change it to plating it Gold. I also experimented with powder coating for the first time! Overall I'm really proud of the way this restoration turned out considering its initial state. I hope that you and all of the people who watched were entertained. If you're reading this right now I want to thank you and let you know that I appreciate you watching my content.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING :-)

I would also like to ask that you give this video a thumbs up to help me out with the KZbin algorithm.

There's only one difference. Radium would glow since it's "decaying", like Uranium. The glow these things make is radioluminescence. It creates the glow by the bombardment of ionizing radiation. It doesn't stop glowing until the particular material doesn't fully decay. The new paint he used glows from Photoluminescence, which is the emission of light from a molecule or atom that has absorbed electromagnetic energy. So, basically, the paint takes the light that has been shined on it, stores it as energy, and then throws it back out as light. The closest to Radium glow in the dark paint, is LIT. I like the Radium and Uranium glow in the dark better, because it looks otherworldly and has a different feel, while today's safer glow in the dark techniques look kind of dull and boring. However, it's better than having Cancer. :)

My grandma worked in a factory painting radium dials along with many other women on the assembly line. She told us stories how most of the women would wet the tip of the brush on their tongue and lips to make a fine point before dipping into the radium paint then painting the dial details and then making a fine point again in their mouth with the brush just used to paint radium on the watch, clock dials and hands. Rinse repeat. For years for many of them, though I think she did that work for a couple years at most Needless to say, most of those women died of varied oral, throat and other cancers. My grandma said she never put the radium covered brush in her mouth,and perhaps wore gloves. She lived normally into her late 80s, outliving her coal miner husband who died of congestive heart failure partly related to black lung, coal dust issues.

i get liking the look of the radium, but radiation is seriously something not to fuck with, especially with long term exposure to it (if you are going to use that clock as a waking alarm you will be next to it for the entire time you sleep every day). it was a good idea to get rid of the paint
@leam1978
@leam1978 2 жыл бұрын
I agree about keeping the radium paint, but would be interested in actual measurements how radioactive it would be. I know it was hazardous to the laborers who built it, but to someone who owned it?
@zielonyfenix8193
@zielonyfenix8193 2 жыл бұрын
@@datbanan2717 Well, body of the clock will stop alpha and most of beta radiation, what remains of beta will be stopped by air in front of the clock . All that remains is gamma. We have no idea how strong was that clock, but radium watches are safe enough to carry for a few hours a day without dramatically rising your chance to get cancer. If someone uses it as a waking alarm then who knows, but it should be safe enough to place on a shelf just to check what hour it is.

This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

What an amazing work! Perfection. This piece of art brought me good memories of my grandparents. They use to have those type of watches and how satisfied I was to experience again that magical sound when the tik-tok began. Congrats from Brazil.

This was one of the best and most enjoyable restoration videos I've seen. You chose such a unique and bizarre item and restored it beautifully, it looks like it came right out of the factory all those years ago. You even milled out an exact copy of the missing leg, your dedication is mind-boggling. I know some people are upset you removed the real radium paint, but it's absolutely understandable to me that you'd want something 100% safe, and it still looks beautiful. Keep doing what you're doing this is truly incredible work.

@@ianhall4081 The funniest thing about this fear of radium is that it is in the form of salts and in such quantities is safe already at a distance of 10-15 cm from it. If you do not walk with an object with radium salts tied to your body, there is no danger!

Yeah on that note though, id be careful with the paint that was sandblasted off and make sure its disposed of properly. It could do damage to ecosystems and possibly slightly poison the water table. I doubt in that small quanity it would be that dangerous. But imagine 10-15 radio illuminescent restorations later... When that stuff gets into your body it could seriously do some damage.

Excellent restoration. I have a ww2 radium military pocket watch (bought in the UK). When I bought it I had not known it was a radium watch. It no longer glows (the phosphor has degraded) but the radium still emits strongly, even through the steel back of the watch, and even through 2mm lead. I have measured the sievert level (using a laboratory instrument) and any close contact will give you a year's allowable level in just a few minutes. The watch is thus highly dangerous and I keep it inside a "cave" of 100mm lead blocks, along with a radium compass. When I can figure out how to dispose of them I will do so, but it so far seems very difficult and expensive in Japan where I live. I thus agree completely that the restorer of the clock carefully disposed of the radium. However, it would have been better if a radioactivity measuring device had been used to assess the clock's condition before and after radium removal, and also around the work surface (radium dust might have fallen out on disassembly), though I understand such devices are not readily available and are expensive. Note also that one commenter wrote that the radiation would only reach 10-15cm from the clock and thus is safe to leave the radium. From my experience I disagree, the radiation can reach much further and will readily penetrate the glass front. In addition leaving the radium means the owner could not enjoy glowing clock hands unless the radium is removed and mixed with a phosphorus glowing substance. That would be a very dangerous activity. Kudos to the restorer for the removal of radium and replacement with safer substances.

You are absolutely true, in these clicks the amount of radium will be higher than watches. This watchmaker should be very careful while dealing with these and since he is a watch maker he might be doing this many times. This is the second video that iam seeing mishandling of radium included watch within two days. Even a geiger muller counter will be able to see the radiation. These watchmakers should be careful and people who are watching this video and want to do the same should be also careful.

I have to admit, I was hoping you'd touch up the radium paint with a fresh coat of phosphor so that it would glow again, but that bit of fancy doesn't detract from how amazing a restoration this was. It was a lot of fun to watch!

Can you advise on how I can go about re-coating the phosphor on my Westclox? The radium is still OK, but the phosphor must be burned-out, because there is not a glimmer of light, even in total darkness.

On the one hand, I'm very impressed by how much time and effort this chap took to service and repair a cheaply made alarm clock that would usually go in the "not worth repair" box. On the other hand, I almost had a stroke seeing no bushing work done and at the amount of oil used. Seemed a very thick oil, too.
