1:30 Bro this part is so funny and confusing. Oppenheimer knew FULL WELL that he was creating a nuke that could destroy so many people but miscalculated about how many. For a scientist, I don't really understand how you could ignore the radiation that would be left that would kill even more people but whatever
@sonicmastersword808011 ай бұрын
Radiation was not well understood back then. Furthermore, they had miscalculated just how powerful the weapon in question would be. The movie makes this clear-theory will only take you so far. In science, reality is the dictator. Does not matter what the math says should happen. If you are missing variables, then reality will offer you a necessary reckoning.
@metazoxan23 ай бұрын
Let me put it this way ... people used to fucking put radium in glass and chocolate bars ... FOR HEALTH!!! People didn't understand shit about Radiation and even when making the first Nuke there was a lot they didn't know. You also have to keep in mind this. Fallout isn't really "radiation left behind" it's more accurate to think of it was residue of the bomb's payload that wasn't used in the actual explosion. This is actually pretty normal for bombs. Bullets and TNT leave behind gunpowder residue as trace amount of the explosive material will ALWAYS be thrown by the explosion's force rather than be used up IN the explosion. But while this is a normal thing with bombs Oppenheimer undeerestimated how much would be left behind or what effect it would have. He might have even simply failed to take residue into account as normal bomb calculations largely ignored residue. This was fine in the past as no one cared if tiny amounts of gunpowder were left at the blast site, but obviously when the residue emits radiation ... this suddenly becomes A LOT more important.
