This is a masterclass in songwriting. I feel so lucky to be alive to hear him change through the years.

Yep. I worked at a little bar that the Truckers played once and they got to the bar to load in about 6 hours early and proceeded to drink for the entire time. Pretty much just the band, our booking agent, and me. I was 22 and didn't even remember until years later when I was reintroduced to his music when I was 42 and sober.

Agreed! I recall seeing Isbell perform with Drive-by Truckers in 03’ & 04’ and I always felt his songs had a particular poetic shine! He continues to impress!!

Hearing it stripped down like this really drives home how heartbreaking a song this is - the album version rocks so hard that it's easy to gloss over the verses and lose sight of how devastating it is

@smarroy So many tunes are better and more revealing when stripped down like this masterpiece. Wish Amanda had been accompanying him on the fiddle on this.

Similar to Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen. With the full band it's a rocker. But when stripped down it's haunting

I'm 69. Heard a lot of good songs from great songwriters. Dylan, Prine, Willie, Van Zandt and more, but Jason, he shreds your heart, and tells brutal truth better than any of 'em.

Jason is truly one of our best living songwriters. This was already one of my favorite songs off the album, but this stripped-down version just makes it hit even harder. Getting some Springsteen Nebraska vibes, in the best way possible.

GEEZUS. This song SLAYS me. Beautiful perfection. P.S. I live right by Bixby, OK. I swear Jason is an Oklahoma son. He makes us proud even if he is technically not from here. Such an honest, amazing artist. So thankful he made it through his troubles to the other side.❤❤❤

Not from Oklahoma; but I guess you could call me an Okie at heart. I lived there for 20 years, and adopted my kids from Muskogee. This song captures both a grittiness and strength that exemplifies Oklahoma. It also makes me think of cousins involved in accidents that went in for pain relief, and left with addictions

Seems like a lot of us got hot with the doc, the pills, and the having to figure some things out. I'd like to thank Purdue pharma and the Sackler family for destroying so many lives. May everyone get a reprieve from that devil that comes in the disguise of relief.
