I grew up with immigrant parents and my mom doesn’t have a thick accent, my dads was super thick. If he watched too much Spanish news, I couldn’t understand him for an hour afterwards. But at the coffee shop I work at, whenever someone orders and has a thick Spanish accent, almost all my coworkers get their order wrong and I have to correct it. They’re always like “how did you know what they said?” Trust me, I had a lifetime of practice for this moment. Now watching this, if this is what my dad sounded like to some people, no wonder he had a hard time being understood 😂😂😂.

Retired United pilot here. Love this skit! My first few years flying to London or anywhere in Europe starting back in the 1990's, this was EXACTLY how our communications with Scottish Control would be! I laughed so hard watching this because it is so accurate. All of the U.S. pilots were continually asking the controllers to repeat themselves, I am sure that it irritated the crap out of them. We would look at each other in the cockpit and say "what the hell did he say?" My last 5 years of flying over there before I retired at the end of 2020 were much easier to understand them. Either I got better at understanding "Scottish" or they got better at speaking American English!

I remember I got to the train station from the airport to get to my university and heard someone speaking on phone and I thought. Did I land in the right country? The accent was insane. I listened intently for sometime to try and identify the language until I heard the word early. I called home as soon as I could to narrate that experience. Now back home I am always delighted to hear the proud Scots speak in their native tongue. Will definitely be visiting again after COVID-19 clears. Thanks SNL.

Deep breath, right! Deep breath! And you need to stay calm Now listen to me very carefully. Theres a small thing the size of an oreo cookie, right? I thought it was a Keebler. What's the doo-dah coming in at (reading)? Mate, the brown doo-dah that looks like an oreo cookie. What's it coming in at? No, brown. The colour brown. Yes! What's the brown doo-dah coming in at? Good. Two heads are better than one. Right, have a little look out the window down at the ground. Tell me if you can see Auchentoshan Plane Station. Listen big man we're only going to get one shot at this. The little burgundy thing on the dash, give it a little tug. Oh no, no, oh my God. To anyone needing a translation: 😂 Male controller: "Hello, how are you? Now, there's not much time here and I know you're starting to feel unwell but we'll get you down from the sky faster than a whippet (dog) gets an erection ok?" "Now I'm going to get you down but here is what I need you to do first, ok? Take a deep breath." "I just want you to take a big breath. In, out, in, out. Are you ok there sir? Are you ok?" "Deep breaths, ok? Deep breaths! And you need to stay calm!" "Now listen to me very carefully, on the small pannel of switches in front of you there's a brown switch with a red jack the size of a... what do you call them? Those American cookies..? is it Keeplar? (?) No, Oreo! I thought it was Keeplar... What's the number on the dial!? The small brown thing that looks like an Oreo cookie! No, no! Repeat, BROWN; the colour! BROWN!" "YES! What's the brown dial saying?" "Good! Two heads are better than one! Ok, have a little look out of the window down at the ground. Tell me if you can see Auchentoshan plane station?" [edited, thanks fellow Scots for the correction lol 💙] Female controller: "Can you look out of the window? No, out of the window!" Male controller: "Listen Sir, hurry up because we're only going to get a crack at this once! Now, there's a small burgundy gadget on the small dash board. Give it a small tug." "Oh no, oh no. In the name of god! Okay, radar has you leaving Scottish airspace, this connection is crunchier than a bag of smashed crabs!" Female controller: "We're going to have to put you through to the Welsh air traffic control." Male controller: "Ok good luck to you all. Glasgow out!" The Welsh will have to take over from here! 😂

I got most of it. Save for the Erect dog, Auchenshpochan plane station and the bag of smashed crabs. Thanks for the "translation". ;)

Good translation, except the first cookies are Keeblers (which any American of my generation would recognize).

Keebler (known for their elf mascots) is a competitor of Nabisco, who make Oreos. A doodad the size of a Vienna Finger sandwich cookie would be larger and more elliptical in shape than an Oreo, not to mention distinctly less chocolate brroooon.

Kate McKinnon slipped the accent a few times but that is definitely one of the best I've heard! - Definitely better than the shite attempts you usually catch! (Slainté from Loch Lomond)

I was thinking the same! She's brilliant! Although nothings funnier than an attempt at Scottish patter. Mike Myers If it's not Scottish its Crap is phenomenal

I think she has a set of grandparents from Scotland. Probably grew up hearing the accent.

Well....they can just drop the accent. I am really not kidding. I often have to interact with my company's IT-support in India (because, of course it is in India). If the operator has a heavy Indian accent and speaks at 200 miles an hour (because, of course they do....), I usually tell them to stop and put on a really posh British accent.... You know, ask them to really ham it up and make fun of the British (which most Indians will happily do). It makes it a lot easier to understand them. :)
