a lot of things factor in also. Staying clean and organized. Unexpectedly, bolts, tools and parts can break. Then there is traffic or waiting for mail delivery. Weather is always an issue. Rich is also videoing this stuff, that itself can be a nightmare. If you have a family to raise that is definitely an issue of time. If you want it done to perfection you need to take your time to get it right. Good job Richpin !!!!!

Hi Richpin, Just removed and installed cylinder head 2 times within a month on my 1996 Saturn SW1 which has 261,000 miles and wanted to thank you for your excellent video showing how to remove the cylinder head. First time I tried to repair my cracked cylinder head with JB weld (oil going into the coolant) which did not work, so second time I installed a rebuilt cylinder head, and as you would say it's now "purring like a kitten".

I recently replaced a cracked head on my wife's SL1 and followed the manual carefully and this video to help interpret some sticky points. Fantastic video!! Here are some things I learned along the way. 1. Didn't remove alternator. I can see how it could have made removal of some of the intake manifold nuts easier, but I don't think that's a necessary step. 2. Timing chain. I went ahead and replaced it. Every repair manual I have walks through installation based on the 2 timing marks. Every after-market timing kit comes with 3 timing marks. I struggled on that, and couldn't find any documentation on the third timing Mark. I ended up counting links and making my own timing Mark with a drop of nail polish. 3. I am very hesitant to use a tap to rechase the threads for the head bolts. I've seen too many destroyed threads this way. I used a gun barrel swab, bore cleaner, and compressed air to make that channel as clean as possible. 4. The pulley on the drive shaft. Mother of God that is hard to break lose. 5. Good opportunity to replace front seal, clean out air injection system, and egr channel passage.

gonna love this one, just acquired a 02 sl1 and just changed out all engine and transmission mounts as well as both torque thrust mounts. all were bad. when replacing the engine mount, i noticed that the timing cover is cracked where the mount is bolted to it. crack is from fwd mount and migrating towards the center mount. also crack can be seen on the fwd face of the engine cover.. oh, to find a replacement cover,,off to the junkyard and use you video as a guide,, thanks rich.

I just got passed the timing cover. I fought with the cover for a good 1.5 hrs before I found the upper of the two "center bolts". I jacked up the motor a few inches to make it easier to access. Crank pulley bolt - took some effort as my compressor is running off a 70' 3/8 hose. I had to crank the pressure to 170psi.

Well I ended up taking the pulley part off. For some reason my engine will not move strait up when I raise it with wood under the pan. Tricky to get the cover out. I have not a clue how to get it back on with RTV on it. The diesel sound was from a stuck plunger. I can only close it in and out by applying pressure to the lock up wards and when I let go it locks in any position. Found tiny broken guide parts in oil pan with metallic like sludge ?????????????

Richpin, this guide has helped me greatly. I just replaced a head gasket on my 01 sl 1.9 sohc, due to oil leaking from the pressurized oil supply to the head (just behind the water pump.) Everything cleaned up nicely, I couldn't fit any feeler gauges under a straight edge on the block deck or head surface, and I followed the torque specs exactly using new bolts. The oil leak was gone for 80 miles, and now appears to be just as bad as before. I'm suspecting a possible blockage in the head, giving the pressurized oil nowhere to go, but there are no noises associated with lack of oil to the valvetrain. What gives? Have you ever come across this issue? Any advice?

Hey Rich, when I insert the 1 x 1 x 2 inch block of wood to support the engine, do I put the wood under the strut mount only or push it so it goes under the back part of the strut support bracket also ? I don't mean to sound so technical. However, I know how important only a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch or so can make on these babies.

Unfortunately I don't have a leak down tester. But another odd thing was that the spark plug wells on cylinders 1 and 2 were completely full of oil and also were the ones with very low compression, I wonder if it has any correlation or just a weird coincidence. Also for the brief time I drove it on 2 cylinders it had what sounded like detonation during acceleration.

I have a 92 sl2 with an odd compression problem, it was running perfectly fine until I stopped at a red light and it started missing really bad. I got home and looked into it and cylinders 1-2 have 30psi and 3-4 have 125psi. It wasn't overheating and the timing looks fine. The fluids aren't mixed at all and were all full and clean. When I took a wet compression test I got 125psi on 1-2 and 250psi on 3-4. That would seem to indicate pistons/rings but why would that just happen all of a sudden?

What types of tools would be absolutely necessary for a job like this? My wife's 97 Saturn has a blown head gasket and possibly bad piston rings. I would like to get in there and fix it all at once, but need to know what tools I may have to buy before I delve into this project. I have a good deal of tools and I know at a minimum I'll need to get a hold of a torque wrench.
