I’m with you on people complaining about mechanics being thieves, everyone makes mistakes sometimes and everyone needs to be paid for their work. I do most of my own work and I am careful and still have made mistakes over the years. Anyhow I don’t blame you for ranting. I enjoy your channel.

Let's see your attitude when you do have to take your car in for service & they charge you $1,500 plus for parts & labor & your car is still not fixed. Replace the wrong part that doesn't fix the problem is on the mechanic/shop. I don't go to repair shops for guesses & parts cannon practice.

Jimmy I remember that humidity in St Augustine for 18 years! We moved to Phoenix area in 2004 and I learned all about heat! lol we are usually 15 percent humidity but it has been about 115 or higher this summer almost every day! Last night low was 90! lol I won’t say that because it is drier heat it is better, but it isn’t bad here until around 110! That’s when it feels like you open the oven door every time you go outside! I do love that it is sunny here everyday and only rains a few times a year! You ought to see the bottom side of my 21 Tacoma, it’s like new! I guess there is advantages to both areas, but that humidity will kick your butt! Stay hydrated brother!

Hi everyone how’s go the wrench turning, quick question for ya. I work at a dealer and they do what’s a MPI multi point inspection. Which is fine but the company doesn’t pay the tech for it, just the .3 for an oil change. My question is, is this industry standard, or is it just dealers ripping off mechanics?
@JimmyMakingitwork6 ай бұрын
Dealers and even many small shops now do this to try and upsell customers. It helps Keep things from being overlooked, if it’s done. But in my experience making employees work for free means they just fill out the form incorrectly to get it done and then there is a liability with an incorrect inspection form. IMO if they want us to do it, hoping to “find work,” they should pay us hoping to “make money.” lol
@giggiddy6 ай бұрын
We very much appreciate the longer videos you consistently produce and respect the amount of time it takes to produce them. Thank you for the sacrifice of the time away from your family. But many KZbin are using AI at every turn and making their videos just long enough to monetize and not a minute longer. They will not last. And the folks that are finally generating some money, said it was slow coming, but one day it kicks off and the rest is history. My point is. Yours will kick off soon and I think you'll be really happy with the results. Hang in there and thanks for your dedication to us and your channel.

Some mechanics are thieves. If you watch South Main Auto Eric O. often winds up fixing cars that other shops couldn't, but they charged the customers for repairs that did not fix the problem. Where do you think mechanics fall on the reputation scale?
@JimmyMakingitwork6 ай бұрын
Some people are thieves in every occupation. I’d guess maybe 10-15% are unscrupulous, probably in line with the general public. I know none of the wealthiest people are mechanics, although we can do well if we work hard. The wealth is real estate, medical, insurance, business, maybe owning a chain of repair shops…but not the blue collar mechanic.
@COBRO986 ай бұрын
So you're implying that mechanics shouldn't be paid for their time and labor.. let me ask you this, if a medical doctor treats you but that treatment ends up not curing you, do they still charge for their time and expertise? Of course they do. Of any field of work I've ever seen, only mechanics are expected to work for free. Not every problem has a clear solution, sometimes you have to fix several issues on a vehicle in order to address the main complaint.
@s.j.58506 ай бұрын
@@COBRO98 If you have to fix more than one issue to solve a drivability issue so be it, but don't charge for your ignorance. Machines (cars, trains, planes, etc.) are way more simple than the human body as far as your analogy with doctors is concerned. Unlike people, a machine has a definitive cause & effect when it comes to a defective component. Whether the mechanic can find it or not is up to the skill of that particular mechanic. If you called me to fix your air conditioner & I replaced half the components, but I still did not fix it, would it be fair for me to charge you a lot of money when it's still not cooling?
@s.j.58506 ай бұрын
I agree totally, mechanics are not paid what they are worth. It's an occupation that requires you to hustle, working side jobs, etc. My issue is with somebody guessing that a particular part is the problem without fully testing it before & after, & charging me whether it's fixed or not. If the part replaced is hundreds of dollars or more then put my old part back on! My conscience does not allow me to charge for a part that does not fix the problem. Charge for labor - yes, charge me for a replacing a part that was not defective in the first place - no.
@COBRO986 ай бұрын
@@s.j.5850 My point was sometimes you have to replace a faulty part to expose another. There is not always a definitive cause and effect on faulty parts, I have seen hundreds of instances where electronic parts are faulty intermittently due to heat cycling. Being an auto mechanic is extremely similar to being a medical doctor, however human bodies don't change, while automobiles do every single year. No two make and models are the same. Sometimes you *have* to make a judgement call and fire the parts cannon, no one has time or money to spend days and days trying to pinpoint the fault of your 2000 wires in your modern vehicle.. You have to be an engineer to be a mechanic today and I'll let you in on a secret, every diagnostic flow chart ends with "replace the part"..

The only Velcro I use for mounting practically anything is 3M heavy duty. It’s the same stuff we get to mount our transponders. It’s a thicker form factor but your item can be removed and reinstalled without as much degradation like the cloth style. Just a thought.
@JimmyMakingitwork6 ай бұрын
I’ll have to check that out, thanks!
@mlieser12306 ай бұрын
Your story of the OBD2 device reminds me of a commercial that aired not long after OBD2 came into play. The vehicle owner plugs the device into the DLC connector because the check engine light came on. Then you could type in the codes on the computer and print out a report that not only told the owner what needed to be replaced, but also included how much parts and labor should be. You see this lady handing the report to her mechanic. The mechanic looks at the report, gives the lady an approving nod and smile. The lady is then shown leaving the shop confident that the mechanic has not ripped her off. That commercial gave me more entertainment value than the regular programming on TV. 🤣🤣 If a customer came into my shop with a report telling me what to repair and charge, I'd fold the report into the shape of an airplane and fly it out the door. The customer would soon follow. 🤣🤣
@JimmyMakingitwork6 ай бұрын
Yeah these companies prey on consumers and pretend it’s mechanics causing the issue. As if mechanics are getting rich. Maybe the shop is, so it seems silly to say mechanics charge too much when they are lucky to get 25-30% of the shops labor and nothing from the parts. People don’t know though, so like most things they carry on about it without much knowledge or thought.
@COBRO986 ай бұрын
Ahh so this is why I've had no less than 200 women look me square in the eye and say "you just hook up to the computer and it tells you what's wrong, why do you charge so much?"..

I laugh at the bating comments you throw in to trigger folks. Stuff like letting the caliper hang and your cotter pin comments. I turn wrenches, to a lesser degree than you, but I appreciate how you do things and how you think. Because at the end of the day, there's multiple ways to accomplish things. None are wrong as long as you get it done right. Im suspect of people who claim to use the proper tool, no matter how specialty it is, every time, then claim to torque everything to factory specs, every time. Never met a real working mechanic that does any of that 100% of the time. Yet reading the comments, there's a half a dozen that claim they do. Lol😅
