Impact Racing was developed by Funcom and was released in 1997 on Saturn and PlayStation.
The game plays over 13 stages and you are pretty much just racing against the clock. There are 6 bonus stages and to reach them you need to destroy a specific amount of other racers (which can be done across multiple levels until you hit the requirement). If you complete the bonus level and get needed number of kills you will unlock an extra weapon power up. (so do the other racers...)
The item drop system during a race is fairly forgiving. dropping an item after each kill although you still have to keep control of your car to collect it. if you energy is low, it will usually reward just energy until the low energy alarm stops. then it will likely be extra time pickups. collision detection between your weapons and theirs often feels off at times which can add to the annoyance on later levels.
I complete the game on Normal as Hard is just too ....Hard and I only just manage to complete normal as you need to not only survive, but also get the kill count on the final stage to actually win the game. I unlock some cheat modes but as in the usual sega tradition, it asks for you to complete hard mode to unlock more. I don't think so, not this time. The game just isn't that good and from what I have researched the ending is exactly the same (apart from listed cheats). -

Thanks for uploading. I spent a few months in Dublin figuring out the Saturn hardware and writing the 3D engine for this game. I left the industry and I don't believe I've seen the final result before. I am to be blamed for the glitches in the graphics, but considering how soon I got something working from scratch after receiving a new, totally unknown devkit, it looks better than I feared. My brain was younger and faster back then.

Thank you so much for all your hard work. This videogame looks absolutely amazing on Saturn. Your graphics engine rivals anybody's at the time and you should be proud of that. Do you have any insights to offer on the making of this game?

@@DTM-BooksI only worked on the early development of this game. It was a small team. Funcom had just opened a new office in Clonskeagh in Dublin. I was originally based in Funcom's Oslo office, had quit that job due to university studies, but briefly returned to Funcom to spend two summers in Dublin. In 1995 and 1996, I believe. I'm glad the game made it to the stores. Most games were never completed. I think I was lucky that most of what I worked on made it to products. It was fun working on games, but I found the industry a bit frustrating to work in.

The game looks very smooth, fast and has attractive graphics, that is a big feat for those early years of fully 3D racing games

One of the few multiplatform titles where the Saturn version was virtually identical to the PlayStation. Silky smooth frame rate, a decent draw distance... hell, it even has transparency effects. Funcom did an incredible job here.

I figure(d) I'm the only one in the world who really liked this game. Finding it used, full package, for 2 bucks was the steal of the century.

Are we not gonna talk about a "200HP V10" that can do "172MPH" or the "220HP V12" that can hit "210MPH". . .like . . .is that the universe we just accept? Cool.

What stands out to me is the game has a proper go at a transparent smoke/fire effect without the usual mesh dithering method.

In a world where two men stand side by side, Connected by a bond, no need to hide. Eight inches of friendship, not what you think, It's the measure of trust, stronger than a link. They navigate life, facing highs and lows, Through laughter and tears, their friendship grows. Eight inches may measure more than length, It's the depth of their bond, a source of strength. Through thick and thin, they stride together, Facing storms and fair weather. Eight inches, not a physical measure, But a symbol of friendship, a lasting treasure

It's too fast paced. It looks like you can concentrate on driving or shooting but not both at the same time.
