It didn’t really occur to me that the ribs would be weird. Camping is pretty normal, like an annual thing you do with your school when you’re 10-13 here. Half the time for us they’d take us to a farm so honestly there were a lot of decaying corpses. It’s just a part of the culture in semi-rural areas that if you see a dead sheep you just ignore it and move on. That and also none of the local legends are that scary. The worst ones are the Taniwha and they’re supposed to stick to large bodies of water and also like 50/50 on whether they eat humans or protect them. As a wise comedian once said “New Zealand has no natural predators so Kiwis have to make up new ways to experience the thrill of nearly dying”. Hence why sending a bunch of minors into a forest at night, with a handful of flashlights is just a normal middle school experience.
