Going back,Saudi Arabia was always EMD,due to Aramco,and the initial engines were F-7's,if I remember correctly,and later there were export versions of various SD's. Those air filters were not originally used by EMD,as Baldwin built some engines for Morocco,again for mining use,and they also had desert air filters! no, those are air filters to prevent the locomotives from getting sand inside the engine
