Interesting that all the very early jet aircraft have awesome asthetics. You would think that the first jet powered flying boat from 75 years ago would look like a rowing boat with wings and a barrel shaped jet thingy haphazzardly strapped on top, and not like this asthetically outstanding awesome peace of machinery that wouldn't even look out of date in the late 60s..

The Saunders-Roe works was at East Cowes Isle of Wight and judging by the presence of several yachts and the buildings in the film it appears that the flying took place over The Solent a short distance off Cowes. Imagine doing that today - 'elth and safety' would have a fit!

Very short takeoff run, especially for the initial drag of all the hull in the water.

The thinking behind this was a good idea. Would have been a useful aircraft for the UK and others until better helicopters came along.
