Wow what a man still going at 99 and definitely has not lost his marbles at all . I love hearing these stories from test pilots with out them we would not have made the advances in flight that we have made . Hats off to these amazing people !!

The markings include a 'P' in a circle on some of the images. What colour are these? Does 'P' denote that an aorcraft is a prototype?
@lanky26103 жыл бұрын
Yes, "p" indicates it's a prototype

Acorn? Flux spoiler? What are they ?

I don't think it has to do with a "Flux Capacitor" , just saying

I think the bullet shape you see where fin and tailplane meet. Quite common on jets.

Joe Lancaster, English WWII bomber pilot. I bet you flew a Lancaster. Any relation?
@lanky26103 жыл бұрын
Yes, he did! No relation to the inventor however.

In the end it was not surprising that Saunders Roe went out of business, considering all the failed flying boat designs they came up with. This was a real flying turkey.

well now.. I,m, pushing 90..[ D.o-B. ] . But vividly remember being on board the ferry - Cowes, to Portsmouth, going on leave from Parkhurst Barracks, Newport ,when this fighter came into landing on Solent Water. Smething went wrong ,it dipped the starboard wing, It hit the water and the Plane Cart wheeled over and over. But..... some how the pilot managed to Eject and was saved.. upon my return back to barracks and mentioning what I had witnessed I was told the wing had hit debris in the water and had had the Wing float torn off ..... which caused the wing tilt and the subsequent crash..... How could this hefty lumbering thing ever compete with enemy fighters of the day?
@royfearn43454 жыл бұрын
A lot of white elephant pipe dreams in those days and not just from Saunders Roe.

@@brucemaclennan9879 It sunk three hundred and sixty six ships and damaged 134. It was well armed and flew 24 hour patrols as standard. Sadly many planes were lost to enemy action, training accidents, mooring and sea landing accidents. Their contribution to the War Effort was huge. The Sunderland was built by Short Brothers.
@brucemaclennan98793 жыл бұрын
@@shannon7002 I agree with your summary of the Sunderland - it was a great plane and did what it was designed for. My comment though relates only to the Saro jet fighter.
