Took my new Savage A22 Magnum to the range this morning ( approx. 150 rds.) . I think I spent more time correcting the failure to feed, failure to fire, and only a couple failure to eject. I wonder if I should break it down , clean, and lube it before going back to the range next week. I probably should have done that after removing it from the box other than running a oiled patch down the bore. Today was very disappointing except for, through all that, I did zero my scope and was very happy hitting that dime sized red dot at 50 yards. I also believe I need to search You Tube for others that had these issues and how they corrected them. The only thing that keeps me hopeful is that I love .22 Magnum rounds. For every issue I dealt with, the next good firing round made me forget the past LOL. Great video! Thanks.

Breaking it down and cleaning it before you take it out to shoot it, is never a bad idea. The oil that the factory puts in them is usually more for preservation than lubrication. I hope you have a better experience the next time out. Thanks for watching!

The only .22wmr rifle I ever owned was a Ithaca lever action single shot. Loved that gun. Gave it to my son years ago and it was stolen in a break-in. We were both heart broken. He shot a crow out of the air at about 50 yards once. Awesome little piece.

I know this is 2 years too late but it should be mentioned that it depends on the scope as to if you can clean the rifle with a rod without removing the scope. I have an A17 hmr sporter with a Burris 3-9x40 on it and can easily remove the dust cover and bolt and clean with a rod. I have seen several videos saying that you have to remove the scope so I tried quite a few of the scopes I have. Most would not interfere with cleaning but there were a couple that would have made it easier to just remove. Apparently savage had some stocks that interfered with removing the bolt?? but mine doesn't. The A17 is identical to the A22

I have the A22 with a thumb-hole stock. No problems at all. That thing is slick as butter. I also have a CZ 457 22 mag. I love both of them. Over 100 rounds of CCI Maxi Mag, i have only had one not fire the first time around. It did fire the second time. Might be the roubd didn’t have primer on one side.

I own a Remington 597 that was a .17hmr. I sent it in and had them put a .22 magnum barrel on it and it shoots really well out to 50 yards. I'm looking for a scope for it might get the one your using for it and see how well it shoots out to 200 yards at the range I work at. Great review of this Savage.

You are right about feeding problems on the 22mag l used to own a 1022 ruger in 22 mag never cycled properly the cases either snagged halfway out of the chamber or the empty case remained in the chamber so you had to eject it manually. This savage looks interesting about 10 years ago remington brought out a semi auto 22 mag l don't know if it was any good.

Good review, Richard. I'm a bolt action fan, in part because of the ease of cleaning and the reliable operation compared to semi-autos. I do have an AR and a Ruger 10-22, but they mostly stay in the safe, unless I feel like dumping some mags.

The 10-22 has been around for a long time and had a stranglehold on the patent for specific semi-auto mechanics. I don't recall ever really seeing much aftermarket for anything Savage makes, with the exception of stocks. Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching too!

The best semi-auto 22mag ever made was the H&K 300. Very accurate with a great trigger. I still have mine and will never sell it. You only live once…buy the best. They’re still available on online auctions. I’d recommend the original H&K scope mount too. German perfection. Only 22mag that’s more accurate is my $3000+ Cooper JSR.

What would you think of loading a dummy round in the magazine first so you end on the dummy round to prevent the striking of the back of the chamber?

That's a good looking gun, although it seems kinda finicky to clean. Although the same could be said for the .22 mag I have, a Marlin 882. Wish I could find some extra mags for it though, because it's still a decent gun.

I like the bolt action .22 mags, the rarely seem to have cycling issues! I'm not a fan of stripping down the A22s, a bore snake is a must with these rifles. I'd check ebay for extra mags. Thanks for watching

I have the 512 as well. I had problems with my CZ and had to send it back for warranty work. I think I got the best "Bang-for-my-buck" with the Rossi RS22M. Thanks for watching!

I've had 3 new savage rifles that had problems with light strikes. One was a centerfire. That has become too common for my liking so these days i tend to avoid them for that reason. That's a shame because usually they make an accurate gun. That little pond is screaming big bass at me, got any good ones in there? lol I know i'm late to comment but good review!

The take down on this turned me off from this rifle.Going to stick with bolt action as far as a 22 wmr rifle goes.Ruger American does the job just fine,,have taken down a lot of coyotes with it.Good review as always Richard.

I've had *ONE* bad load. I got very fortunate, it was with an inch and half barrel revolver, the bullet stopped in the barrel......if I had cycled another bullet then it would have blown up in my hand. I try to avoid CCI but some ammo is better than nothing.

more than just the gun concerns me, for ammo from a reputed manufacturer to be no fires is just not acceptable. I have not shot much for 20 years but when I did it was an extreme rarity to have a no fire due to ammo in long rifle or WMR. You did a great review, provided some especially good insights and gave excellent instruction, thank you. I am disappointed in the gun, the troubles you had may go away with use to smooth out the moving parts, including the seating of the magazine. But for a $500 gun you shouldn't have to break the damn thing in, period! I have been eyeballing the target version with the heavy barrel and wood stock but this review has cooled me off big time.

Every now and then, you'll run into a bad batch of rimfire ammo. Some brands are worse than others. The rifle has been running great since it's had a few rounds through it. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching too!

ya know I keep thinking about the semi auto action relative to the .22WMR, even with .22 long rifle, jam ups and failure to fire is not uncommon. It is it seems inherent in the design, at least for relatively cheap mass produced off the shelf guns. Most of my experience is with bolt action, pump action and there you have a pretty consistent return to battery, locking lug (s) on a leverage device which is the bolt. It fairly well assures that the cartridge is fully seated in the chamber and the position of the bolt to chamber meeting point is also fairly consistent. This is not the case with auto loaders, the bolt will react with more or less energy depending on ammo specs and thus the cartridge may experience variations in cycling and so too the bolt may or may not be in the same " battery position". This of course means the stroke of the firing pin may be highly variable cartridge to cartridge. Ammo with very miniscule deviation in case dimensions, dirty action all play into this to promote irregular battery position. A firing pin strike thus can have its impact much reduced because it is first expending its energy on seating the cartridge more completely in the chamber. Just a thought. One thing I suspect that helps this condition is to shoot the hell out of the auto loader, the supposed benefit would be that a high number of cycles will smooth out the action and compensate for at least some of the inconsistencies. For this cartridge family I just cannot get comfortable in an auto loader. I just did now go with a Savage bolt gun with 10 round rotary magazine, the reliability and accuracy potential I believe to be much better, highly reliable and consistent compared to the auto loader.

Yup! I think the quality control isn't NEARLY as good for 22 magnum compared to the more popular 22 LR. For whatever reason I've had great ammo from Armscorp, and I went with a double action revolver instead of semi auto anything for the round. The modern Smith and Wesson 48 is REALLY fun, but need to find good ammo for sure. The 648 is too barrel heavy because of that underlug which is too bad because 22 mag can benefit from the longer barrel length.

You're living dangerous with a possible delayed fire on ejecting the misfires too early . I learned that a long time ago when I threw a misfired round into the brush to hear it whiz away some seconds later .

Although it can cause issues, the force of the round, outside of the chamber, is not nearly as devastating. Most of the time if a round goes off outside of the chamber, the pieces follow the path of least resistance. Usually the heavier round will move much less than the case or shell, sending the empty case much farther than the actual bullet. I'm not saying that it's completely safe by any means. Mine is a shooter! I gotta tell ya, I have allot and shoot ALLOT of 22 Mag and I can count 22 Mag duds in one hand. Id bet its your gun. Real nice bluing and MAN sized. I re stocked it with a Boyds laminated stock. Pillar and glass bedded. Now It shoots Fed 50g into 1" @ 100yards now. Coyotes around here, DO NOT like it! 🤘🏼🤟🏽🤘🏼🤟🏽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 I herd Savage gonna be making this one in 17 WSM!! Im waiting for that one!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️
