I got my 10/22 in 1992. Sharp as a tack. I have never used a scope. In 1992 I was 25yo. My buddy Gary (RIP) and I went out to the abandoned trestle over the West Fork of the Trinity River in Arlington, Texas. We always got a brick of 500 rounds every Friday. The trestle was about 50’ above the water. I never had a problem shooting Water Moccasins right in their heads as they were swimming.

About 14 years ago I built a 10/22 target. It has a Clerke bull barrel, Volquartson trigger group and a Fajen full adjustable target stock. With Wolf match ammo it will consistently shoot dime sized groups at 75 yards. Find the ammo your rifle likes and the groups shrink.

I’ve owned and still own couple 10/22s, one is the all weather and the other is the Performance Center Competition, both great shooting rifles. I’ve also owned the heavy barrel target you were shooting in this video and for years I tried every ammo you could buy and couldn’t get consistent groups with it and after lots of research and talking to different shooters in the know I found out that these rifles do not like having a free floated barrel with one bolt connecting stock to frame, any heat in the barrel change point of impact, if you’ll notice when Josh was shooting it after couple groups it was wondering all over. A simple test is wrap electrical tape around barrel three inches or so from the end of stock and try it. My Performance Center Competition has two bolts connecting stock to frame, it shoots lights out with a free floated barrel. My two cents, great video Josh.

I’ve heard you aren’t supposed to free float 10/22’s because of the way the barrel mates with the receiver and it causing “barrel droop”. Something about the steel barrels especially the heavy’s and aluminum receivers not holding up.

Having spent several years shooting small-bore competitively, I MUCH prefer the way he did this test. It illustrated how consistent and repeatable he is with each combination. I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to see this repeated with multiple types of ammo, but if he had stopped after the first group on each, they would have been 0.91 (which kinda sucks) and 0.33 which is pretty respectable. Because he did the video this way, we can see that across the entire course of fire all 25 rounds from the Ruger produced a group that was over 1" where as 19 out of the first 20 rounds from the Savage were comfortably under 1/2" (the last group was rushed and the group consequently opened up noticeably).

@@steveminer8341 I bought two older Savage Arms 22'S, both with full sized, adult configured, wood stocks on them. The bolt action is a Model 234 with a five shot detachable mag and the semi is a Model 64 with a ten shot detachable mag on it. Both mags are made of heavy gauge steel. Both rifles shoulder perfectly, feel like quality firearms on the shoulder and even though both open sights on each rifle have no adjustment ramp on them, they shoot point of aim. I wanted rifles that felt like rifles and not toys. These look to both be at least twenty years old, and after I cleaned them, they are everything I was looking for. I might invest in some scopes though because my eyes are fng toast. Those open sights, even with my age eye damage, are very easy to pick up. Great rifles, especially for what I paid for both. They are like sister guns to one another. I am pretty happy especially every time I put one of these to my shoulder and aim it. They just feel right. Up to the shoulder and instant sight alignment. Just perfect.

FYI… I have both the 10/22 & the A22. Both are fun but dollar for dollar I shoot my A22 the most just for accuracy reasons, shooting gophers at 100 yds is just more fun when you can really reach out & touch them more often… As for loading the magazines once you get used to loading them it’s second nature. I have put a Boyd stock on the A22 & she fits like a glove, especially using the accu-trigger… I may pursue the Timney trigger in the future for the A22… That would be my only other mod I would add.

I have 3 10/22's an old Marlin 60 and a Winchester 190... target shooting with the 10/22 target is the most accurate but only really likes CCI Blazers lead. - the Marlin is my favorite squirrel rifle and prefers Winchester Wilde Cat 40's... and my Winchester sucks! and has a nasty trigger that I can't seem to smooth out... so even though I have 3 10/22's - a standard with Williams peep - a blued mannlicher with a Williams peep integrated scope rail with Simmons 4x .22 mag scope and a target mod with everything... that's way too heavy for a walk about... the Marlin is my go to for small game woods walking. Nice shooter with a great trigger and an old weaver 4x scope. Great little gun. BTW - the 10/22 target is a total tac driver! It will shoot groups that can be covered with a dime at 50 yards all day long - a little bigger than a Nickel at 75 yards and on good days 68-80° with no wind and decent light, quarter size at 100 yards... I don't really understand why, but it shoots best with standard velocity CCI Blazer lead 38gr round nose... 🤔 I would have believed that a subsonic would have performed better... but "whatever works"

Nice informative video, I prefer the 10/22 better. I have 2 of them, the first one started as a standard stainless 10/22 that took apart and polished the bolt and the area that the bolt slides on for SMOOTHER operation. I then installed a X-RING TACTICAL SOLUTION FLUTED aluminum steel barrel (light weight) and Volquartsen TG2000 trigger assembly. I put that in a Houge black tactical thumbhole stock and mounted a DESENT but not too expensive 6-24X-40 AO so I can see when I'm shooting at small things at up to 100 yards away. The second 10/222 I bought was already built except for the scope. It had a NICE forged aluminum receiver with the scope rail as part of the receiver, it had a fancy aftermarket bolt, bolt handle, mag release and a BX trigger assembly and a MAG-PUL HUNTER STOCK and a Ruger hammer forged heavy barreled I got that slightly used for $399.99+tax but ALSO got 30 days FREE RANGE TIME in a 75' indoor range that I can at least sight it in to start at 75'. I like having a 10/22s because I would use the first one for hunting because it was light and comfortable shooting off hand. The other one is HEAVY so it's my bench rifle. Depending on how both shoot I may swap the better parts around to make the BEST 10/22, BUT that will be about 6 months later became I had a FIRE in my BEDROOM at 3AM. A couple of my "toys" got TOASTED. The rest are at a VERY GOOD friend's HOUSE being SECURED while my house gets fixed, I'm in a APARTMENT NOW and I REALLY DON'T WANT TO ADVERTISE MY HOBBY (for politically correct reasons and SECURITY REASONS) ESPECIALLY HOW THINGS IN THIS COUNTRY IS GOING ON NOWADAYS. I had my conceal carry permit since 2000 and I'm GLAD I HAVE IT BUT DON'T RELISH THE THOUGHT THAT I MAY HAVE TO USE IT. I'M 71 and injured my left knee back in 1983 and it doesn't get better with AGE. I CAN'T RUN EVEN IF GODZILLA WAS CHASING ME. LOL 😨😩😧😂😂😂😂😂😂 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WITH 22lrs. I've got 2 different pre-WWII Mauser single shot 22lrs (ES340N & ES340B) BUT THAT'S A DIFFERENT STORY. 😉😁😄

Loved your video. I used to be a Ruger only guy. My experience has changed my mind and your video seems to echo it. My 10/22's are magazine and ammo picky or there will be feeding issues often. I have moded some and really like the BX trigger. I have one with a Hogue over-molded stock and a carbon fiber barrel. Super comfortable and light weight. Great for walking in the woods and pretty accurate with the right ammo. Then I got Savage Mark II used and have never shot a more accurate .22. No matter the MOD I made to my Ruger did it come close the group size for the stock Savage. I just bought another Savage and looking at a couple more. Sure there are more options for the Ruger. It is just a decision of do I want to look cooler or shoot more accurate. In my opinion the Savage feeds better, shoots better (I do not mind the Accu-Trigger) and costs less. That is tough to beat in my book.

I have a Ruger 10/22 Target like the one you shot. Stock barrel, but it is full of Kidd parts. Shot two 5-shot groups at 100 yards to check accuracy, using SK Pistol Match Special. First group was .70", second was .50". Works for me! -- The Savage B22 FV (heavy barrel) which I bought last week for $318 OTD has only gone out to 50 yards, with .25" groups pretty common at that distance, using Lapua Center-X. It seems to prefer Lapua over SK. Taking the B22 out to 100 tomorrow. I will also shoot it with a variety of less expensive CCI ammo. -- SK and Lapua are oily rounds, and hard to get into the Savage rotary mag because of that. Fingers slipping around. Other ammo is slightly more difficult than with a 10/22 mag, but not a deal breaker. Savage is the king of cheap accuracy! And finally they have a decent magazine for 22LR.

Great review.. I wonder how the A22 would stand up to the 10/22 competition… Ruger has improved cleaning by creating access to the barrel from the rear and it’s a custom shop gun so several improvements have made it extremely accurate. Also kinda surprised that on the A22’s 4th target a fly landed right next to where your rounds were landing and while it continued it’s stroll, it didn’t immediately fly off as another round hit the target. That fly had balls…

On my latest project, a heavy barrel ar22 build with a very tight chambered Anschutz barrel, I have a lot of issues with lube hanging up cartridges trying to load in the chamber. I can drop the hammer but the bolt is too far back to allow the firing pin to be hit. Makes me curious what chamber is the best balance between benchrest and the typical loose bentz chamber. Obviously a .2247-.2242 chamber is too tight for me and my semi auto action with most ammo, but SK standard with its lighter lube runs fine.

I have a pretty modified 10-22. The single best thing you can do is the trigger. The gun is otherwise pretty cheaply made. The bolt really needs an upgrade like tactile solutions does. My 10-22 target had a good barrel but was too heavy. To get one hole Groups you need to also headspace the bolt and barrel. Ruger didn’t do that with the target version. Still if I wanted cheap I’d go with a stock rifle and a bx trigger.

I just got my target lite 10/22 but I was gonna swap out the stock for a ProMag Tactical Folding Stock PM272. Would it work if I just slowly sanded it to fit the .920 bull barrel? Please someone @ me or something it says it won’t fit the .920 but few people told me to sand it down

I recently bought a 10/22. For the rifle I got I felt completely ripped off. It costs almost the same as my Ruger American.308 win. The .308 win was a dead on monster right out of the box. The 10/22 was so far off target at 25 yards with the provided scope I had to start sighting at 10 yards! It took three different sighting sessions to get the ride to an acceptable level and to work out what ammo it likes. The synthetic stock was so warped that with the front stock band clamp installed it was pressuring a twist onto the barrel. I had to delete the band and float the stock off the barrel to get the barrel to float free. That fixed the windage issues. But elevation was still over 10 inches off at 25 yards. Turns out the upper receiver where the scope mount is wasn’t level. Fixed that. I re-centered the optics in the scope and now the rifle shoots as it should. Now if the bolt would hold open after the last round.

Also have a light-ish weight one in a Hogue stock and the BX with a little 1-6 LVPO and have a Custom Shop with a Tandemkross Ultimate trigger and an Arken EP-L4. Previously owned an even more decked out one with a lot of Volquartsen parts that I ended up selling to a buddy. Never owned a Savage auto 22 though I've owned a couple of their bolt rifles and still have one FV-SR and have a B17 FV with a Boyd's stock and an Athlon Argos that's pretty sweet. I have nothing against Savage and I like the laminate stock on this A22 but for a budget-ish 22 auto loader... CLEARLY Ruger for me!

1LRLRG - It's because of the Ruger Charger Pistol, being a pistol on/of the same 10/22 platform/action, these 25 rounders are not allowed in the pistol - so they banned them all, rather than going after folk who may be using the 25's in the pistol?! Which is silly as you, obviously, can't legally shoot a pistol unless you are at a range (in Canada). Yet you can still buy and use the GSG drum mags, which are 110 rounds (actually on sale at Cabela's right now for around $100.00). They are junk but you can get and use them legally. There's some good old logic, right there!! LOL, cheers...

Very nice review. I think you covered it pretty well. The Savage is less expensive but does not have all the aftermarket things you can purchase for the Ruger. The Ruger had a bull barrel and I expected that an advantage. However, I had a Ruger 10-22 some time ago and had put a match barrel on it and a nice free floated stock and it was not all that accurate. I do like the accu-triggers in the Savage though. But that is a personal preference thing. I like light trigger pulls and I adjust them down a long way and the extra safety in taking that pull down is built in the accu-trigger. One thing in your review was a failure to extract on the Ruger. That most likely was due to a tighter chamber or a bad round.

Though hardly anyone does it, I've always found 75 yards is the most useful test distance for a 22 rimfire, and 100 yards for the 22 rimfire magnum, shot in calm wind. And five 5-shot groups on ONE sheet of paper. FLYERS INCLUDED! No cheating! BTW: Never shoot targets without a backstop.
@PursuitofAccuracy
@PursuitofAccuracy 2 жыл бұрын
Curious to why you settled on 75 yards. I typically test lots of ammo etc at 50 as it cuts down on environmentals influincing the projectile. I then test the top performers at 100 yards make a final choice

@@PursuitofAccuracy I know there are a lot of people on KZbin that like to shoot rimfire ammo out to 400 yards. That's fine, but it has no practical application for hunting small game. The 22 rimfire is, at best, a 75 yard round for regular use on varmints. I've also used the 50 and 100 yard ranges, but the energy and trajectory drop at 100 yards make the latter distance largely irrelevant. But then shooting is mostly about having fun, so if you enjoy it, do so.
