The reason your barrel is flimsy from the stock is because the barrel is free floated... it has one point of contact and that is by the action of the rifle... having a free floated barrel is a fantastic feature on a rifle for improved accuracy! When shooting be careful when resting the rifle. Never rest the barrel, always rest as far back on the stock as you can. And you will drill tracks all day long! Cheers!

They make free floating stocks that are NOT flimsy.. flimsy dont mean free floating it just means cheap. . And he explained that

Considering all the variables- budget rifle, budget ammo, cold winter conditions,scope mounts not low enough, bipod on a cold picnic table- I'd say you're a superb shooter and the Axis demonstrated a fine performance. Good Upload. Roses are Red Mornings are Hard I Suck at Poetry Coffee

Hornady makes better ammo than Winchester or Remington. The idea that Hornady is budget ammo is nonsense. They make several grades of ammo and their best is as good as anyone's.

Good rifle. I just got the same one except mine has the accu-trigger. Got my trigger as low as it will go which is supposed to be around 1.9 lbs or so. Very light and easy to be accurate.

I have the the Axis stainless steel 22-250. Hand loads will improve performance. I also changed out the trigger spring instead of replacing the trigger. (Savage AXIS Trigger Spring Kit) Turns the 6 lbs pull to 3 to 3.5 lb pull. I am happy with that and it cost about U.S. $ 15.00 Very east to install.

Picked mine up in .223 with accutrigger for $259 on sale. Pain in the ass to find rings that help you get a good mount. All in all for a budget rifle it's great. .75- 1 moa is standard for me with Winchester varmintX. Perfect gun for packing on the 4 wheeler or riding around behind the seat of your truck.

For $100 you can buy a Timney trigger for it. You will be SO happy you did. You can even install it. It adjusts from 1.5-4 lbs. Your trigger now is at 7 lbs. That will shrink your groups up to 1/2" at 100 yards ! I love mine so much I bought a second in .308 with the heavy barrel. Boyd's tactical stock and Timney on both. They will out shoot my Rem700s with some factory Ammo ! Good video

Try leaning INTO that bipod so the legs are canted toward the rear before you squeeze that trigger. That allows the springs to absorb a lot of the recoil and drive the rifle back into your shoulder without the muzzle jumping up.

Hi Aaron, I was looking at the Axis 2 Predator in Cabala's. In you original scope configuration, what did you think about the eye relief with regards to your shoulder position. To me the stock on the Axis seemed a little on the short side in a standing position. And disregarding the over all technical aspects of the rifle, Do you like it? Thanks.

@rbm6184
@rbm6184 8 жыл бұрын
I got one. Standard Axis rifle in 22-250. Most folks don't realize that the bolt and trigger will loosen up and become much easier after they break the rifle in by shooting it. My scope is a Nikon Buckmaster II 4X12x40. Just bore sighted it but not broken in yet. I have had a Savage in the past in 25-06 and was impressed with it. Its a good affordable rifle for the money and I know what I am getting. Not a Remington 700 but still a good rifle. It will get the job done and it is accurate enough. The rifle will shoot better than I can. Once I mount it on a rifle rest (I use a Benchmaster) that fact becomes obvious. It will become even more obvious when I start reloading hand loads for it taylored to the rifle's chamber and lands (chamber throat). I would wait on getting a new trigger for it if I were you. It is a little heavy but make sure its broken in. If it still is not to your liking after, then lighten it up. BTW, I prefer to use the old timer method of a shooting stick because I don't like the drawbacks of a bipod that can affect accuracy. The only sure way to measure the rifle's accuracy is from a rifle rest. Synthetic stocks are not the greatest as you now know by the barrel to stock play. I would rather have a wooden stock. The barrel is suppose to be free floating though. Thanks for sharing. I agree that some reviews of this rifle were unjustly negative. Most did not even put the rifle on a rifle rest which is the only sure way to measure of the rifle's accuracy. Most were only using factory loads also but the rifle should still deliver reasonably good accuracy even with factory loads as you showed. Other points they made were nit picking such as butt stock pad pinching (LOL) which really is not even a problem.

haha thanks! i plan on getting a boyd stock for it when i have some extra money but right now restoring my .303 is first. i have to make a new video soon because ive been practicing a lot and did a trigger job and can shoot SUB MOA groups at 200, fantastic gun
@rbm6184
@rbm6184 8 жыл бұрын
Aaron Kellar Nice. I know this rifle can shoot sub MOA even without a trigger job before I even saw any review videos. Some reviewers were saying that it could not so I knew right away their reviews stunk. Some of these reviewers are just not riflemen, did not test the rifle correctly, and don't know what they are talking about. It may take finding the right load for it be it factory or hand load but I know it will shoot sub MOA. I think I will stick with the factory stock unless I find a good wood stock somewhere. Be sure to include the loads you are using when you do the next video. Thanks for the reply.

Damn guys. Lot of know it alls here making asses of themselves. There's no need for the negativity. I see at least 5 comments about the forend, which the op has answered already. Why insult each other? I assume most people here have the same interests, and it's an interest in an area that has alot of people against it. Why be petty about it? If you have a disagreement about something, phrase it in a way that draws attention to it, but doesn't put the other person off. Nobody listens to people when their on the defensive.

Finished my Savage Axis .22-250 upgrades. Budget Savage Axis .22-250 caliber bolt action rifle (Nikon Buckmaster II 4-12x40mm scope)(upgraded Boyds pepper featherweight thumbhole stock, DIY trigger job, and DIY bolt handle job). The bolt handle job was just to take some of the top curve out of the bolt handle with a Dremel drum sander and fine sand finish then bluing it. This allows more clearance of the handle with the mounted optic or scope. I probably have about the same price as the rifle in the Boyds stock (I will bed it if need be) and the scope. The factory rifle was $269. Not bad as it is for the price and will do the job but the upgrades are worth it to me as I think the rifle can perform better than factory. I hate plastic stocks and the fact that vibration will produce fliers in a bullet group. Pictures below. Hope your upgrades turned out good. s1286.photobucket.com/user/robertchm/media/SavageAxis.22-2502_zpssrmgbw5w.jpg.html s1286.photobucket.com/user/robertchm/media/SavageAxis.22-250_zpsnnaoyllz.jpg.html s1286.photobucket.com/user/robertchm/media/SavageAxis.22-250stamp_zpsulpacgku.jpg.html

I bought a Savage Axis 2 XP and the dammed thing will not Eject the rounds out of the Ejection port. It extracts them (Thank God!) but it just rattles them on top of the mag. What a pain in the butt! I rebuilt the whole head of the bolt, but still,..No Go. I took the bolt apart and could find nothing wrong with it. Eventually I am going to throw in a larger ball bearing under the extractor and I think that may do it.

Just an update. I put fish scales on the trigger (not the most accurate but ballpark) and it showed 7 to 7.5 lb. factory pull. Heavy and hard describes it. The sear edge and trigger sear slot was loaded with factory grease. Cleaned those. Just did a DIY trigger job upgrade, 1.5 coils removed from the trigger spring with the Dremel and light (VERY light) polish of sear edge and trigger sear slot edge with a micro fiber cloth and some fine or light abrasive stove top cleaner. Put the fish scales back on and it is showing 5 to 5.5 lb. trigger pull. Still not great but much better lighter and smoother trigger. An accurate rifle needs a decent trigger to get the best out of it. Hope your upgrades did the trick. The guy in this video shows how its done. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGSqp3-Knpd2eaM

One other tip if you want to get tack driver accuracy off the bipod with that stock, you need to reinforce the fore end. I used epoxy, some old crappy broken carbon arrows(left over from plinking at cans with my bow LOL) and it made a huge difference. The stock didn't flex up and touch the barrel so easy. If you grab the foreend and push if towards the barrel you'll see if touches the barrel with almost no effort. Reinforce it to stop that(;

I wanted to tell you as well that shooting off sand bags in the front and rear will help your groups. This also helps get you and the rifle down close to the table as possible improving your comfort and most importantly stability. Just give it a try. A shorter bipod for table shooting is nice too. You're left to right spread is from your irregular trigger pull. I can hit a medium sized Gatorade bottle at 400 yards 5 out of 5 times after some practice.

Nice rifle. I have a couple of them in 6.5 Creedmoor great cartridge just like the 22-250 is. I am thinking about getting a Savage Axis II XP in a 22-250 for my next rifle. I would suggest you get a Timney Trigger or just do a trigger job on your factory trigger to make your shooting easier. You Tube has some good and bad ways to do it. Research it and see what you think. I personally put a lighter spring in my rifle and made an over travel screw per videos I watched on you tube. My trigger is about 2.5-3.5 pounds now. If you could get an accutrigger spring and replace the spring in your rifle that would work too. I don't know if you can purchase one though. I know it would work because I have the cheaper rifle as well as one with an accutrigger. The Boyd's Stocks are nice, but I do think people make a bigger deal out of the flex in the stock than it is. The trigger will cure more accuracy problems by making your shooting easier than the stock. But they sure are pretty I may get one myself when I have a little bit of extra money just because they are so pretty.

wait a second on releasing the trigger after the shot....and retract the legs on your bipod so the gun is not so high off the bench, more stable that way. A better stock will help out in the accuracy department for sure and mod the trigger or replace it all together. Best accuracy will be with projectiles that go well with the twist rate of your barrel...too heavy or too light will not stabilize in flight.

Contrary to popular belief, you want to put the rings tight to the turrets. If the rings are snug against the turrets, then the scope can't move.

So basically if you squeeze the turrets between the rings, the turrets can't slide through the rings, causing your scope to stay put. When you have the rings out in the open, the recoil can cause the scope to slide forward and backwards in the rings. I hope this helps.

Ya you just squeeze that 6.5 pound trigger and follow through. How about do a trigger job and reduce the pull to 3.25 pounds with the stock trigger or better yet get a Timney Trigger that can be adjusted as low as 1.5 pounds.

I had a ruger american chambered in .450 bushmaster an the mag was terrible an i didnt like anytjing about the rifle beside the weight but even that made it feel like a cheap toy, i traded mine for a Mossberg Patriot 300 win mag & am much more satisfied to say the least!! Oh an this was all in just the past 2 weeks i didnt have the bushmaster for 3 days

im aware, my comment was on how flimsy the fore-end of the stock is, it is easily bent and could easily make contact with the barrel itself

Using sandbags and resting the rifle near the front of the magazine will eliminate the possibility of any forend activity with the barrel. This is the best habit to form with any sporter rifle/thin barrel- rest the rifle close to the front action screw. Bipods can invite an unseen world of issues as well as the lead sled platform types.

I would leave it free floating until you get a better stock. Probably give you better results. The barrel needs to move. Another issue with that stock that "Big Ed" brings up in his video is that the cut out for the trigger on the savage makes the stock less sturdy. That load your shooting is a cannon lol.

im not sure you understand the point of a free floating barrel, the barrel is not supposed to move its simply not supposed to be touching anything

Dile that in at 200 dead on. Should be about half inch or a little better high at 100. Depending on scope hight. Your goal should be to keep the bullet close to your line of sight. Say a deers engine room is 10 inches round. You can aim dead center and you bullet shoud not be more than 5 inches above or 5 inches below. Out to 300 yards. Not saying shoot a deer at that range. But if you see a yote at 300 put the horizontal hair on his back line and let it go. So you shoot at it. And you do your part. it should be a hit no guessing but wind. Im in canada its not legal for deer where i am .223 and up . Great for yotes. Personally i wouldn't shoot a deer with any thing less than 100gn pill. To many people cant shoot. Thay Get that buck fever. End up just wounding it. And not finding it. So i do understand why. Smaller calibers need to be more precise shots. Looks like you should be fine. Taking mine out after some yotes soon. I can wait. There is as saying i heard befor. Beware of the man with only one gun. Chance's are he knows how to use it. There is alot of truth to that. To all you deer hunters out there. SAVE A FAWN SHOOT A COYOTE . Happy shootng and play safe.

@aaronkellar6583
@aaronkellar6583 7 жыл бұрын
it actually 100% depends on the rifle, this is a long action, you can get other rifles that have .22-250 in a short action but the axis rifle has a long action for every caliber

Usually, Gunmakers will cut costs on building their budget line by using their long action. Some companies start their budget line intros with their long action, then later add their small action into the line- sales dictating what and how. Tikka, Savage, introduced their budget series using their long actions, and I believe Ruger did as well, albeit Ruger wasn't offering short chamberings at that time. As sales proved positive, Ruger added their short version. Browning/Winchester, being late comers to the budget rifle concept, intro'd both long and short actions (AB3 and XPR)
@garrytalley8009
@garrytalley8009 6 жыл бұрын
Actually the AXIS uses a long action in all the chambering's to cut costs. Same receiver for all rifles. Same receiver for LH or RH also all they do is cut the opposite side for the bolt. Advantage to that in a smaller cartridge is that you can make your bullets longer to fit close to the rifling and they will fit in the magazine because the magazine is longer because of the action. Because they use a two section bolt it's easy to do and that cuts costs too. It's a very good rifle for the money. The best deal on the market. I have two 6.5 Creedmoor's a low end one and one with a heavy barrel and accutrigger and they both shoot good, real good! I did a trigger job on the cheaper on the trigger is way too heavy stock. If someone could get the spring they use in the accutrigger and change it out that would be a real easy fix.

While looking at Boyd stocks that you mentioned I did notice that they say 22-250 Rem. is a short action along with 223 Rem., 243 Win., and 7mm-08 Rem. I know my 25-06 Rem. was a long action and I know 30-06 Springfield and 270 Winchester is also long action. It is under the Measurements tab and ATTENTION CUSTOMERS. www.boydsgunstocks.com/ProductDetail/43a374d04111_classic-savage-axis-detachable-box-mag-short-action-factory-barrel-channel-nutmeg www.boydsgunstocks.com/ProductDetail/43a374c04111_classic-savage-axis-detachable-box-mag-long-action-factory-barrel-channel-nutmeg www.nssfblog.com/firstshotsnews/shooting-vocabulary-long-action-bolt-rifles-versus-short-action-bolt-rifles/ I know you probably meant a long receiver. :-) The size of a 22-250 cartridge for example dwarfs a 25-06 cartridge by comparison. The bolt and receiver is longer and larger than the 250 also. Its the 3.340 inch COL (Cartridge Overall Length) measure that is the standard for long action. Under that is short action. On a totally separate note from the above short, long, and magnum actions. This rifle has a standard action compared to a Mauser action. That means that it is possible to short stroke the bolt (fail to pick up the next round) because the case is ejected as it leaves the chamber rather than a Mauser action that only ejects the case when the bolt is fully to the rear. It just takes getting used to pulling the bolt fully to the rear every time to ensure the next round is chambered. Whether standard or Mauser this should be a mental routine operation of the bolt so there is no short stroking.
