This was a really useful video, thank you kindly for sharing. My Savage Axis (also in 270 Win) has about 1100 rounds down the pipe and today was the first time I tore the bolt apart to clean it and see what's happening in there. Everything looked good; wiped 'er down, hit the parts with some fresh Rem Oil and re-assembled it. One thing I might add (for anyone who reads this comment) is to make sure you test the assembly once it's all back together by dry firing the rifle. I accidentally installed my bolt handle backwards the first time, slid it back into the receiver and had a WTF moment when it wouldn't cock. I removed the bolt again, gave the bolt handle a 180 and I was back in business. Glad I test fired so my WTF moment didn't happen out in the field. Cheers from Canada!

Thank you for taking the time to put this video together and sharing. I recently bought a Savage Axis 30-06...cleaned it before taking it out to the range, but never gave the bolt a second thought until after I took my 5th shot trying to sight it and all I heard was "click"...Having never taken the bolt apart before, I was glad to have found your video. Although some of portions were out of frame; I was still able to follow along as I took mine apart, cleaned and reassembled. Hope it did the trick...will see tomorrow at the range!

@@wendycorrea2399 Had the same problem with a new, left-handed .223 Axis using military ammo, which has harder primers. Cleaned the bolt internals after watching the video, but it didn't help. Got better results after dry-firing a couple hundred times, but still don't trust it. By any chance is your Axis left-handed?

@@paulsancheski8618 Yes it is, I was careful to remember to invert the bolt handle cuz the video is for a righty, but didn't realize the ejector would need to as well. Went to the range she loaded and fired fine but when I ejected she wanted to spit the casing out to the right.. which would cause the ejector to throw it to the right, and the casing would get pinched in the ejector and I'd have to drop thee the bolt, lol

Thanks for the video! Due to some very humid conditions in my house the bolt handle on my Savage Axis .308 started developing a rust spot on it. I wanted to remove the handle to eliminate the rust and re-blue the handle. I wasn't quite sure how to get it apart. I typed in "Savage Axis Bolt Disassembly" and your was the first video to come up. About how do us weaklings set the firing pin to fire: I am 57 yrs old, not really strong with my hands. I couldn't get it all the way up until I realized not to use the tip of my thumb. Using the pad of my thumb and grabbing the bolt with the other hand, it went pretty easy. Just passing along.

the lug has two different lengths,in the beginning of the video the short lug end is down,after reassembly the long end is down. Which way is correct since the lug can be spun with the short on the bottom or the top.

Would you recommend putting lube for extreme cold weather on this rifle? (Fairbanks Alaska winter is an average of -20 for 4 months but still love going to shoot) so far I put "Arctic" lube on both my Glock 40 and AR-15. But this bolt is kinda tricky and well don't want to go to the process if the lube won't work on this rifle.

When un-cocking the bolt make sure your other fingers are not near the cocking pin - my spring was so tight when I pushed it up to uncock it the cocking pin pinched and trapped my middle finger and it took me a minute to move the pin to get it free. Holy snickies.

Axis Creedmore is brand new and the spring on the uncocking mechanism when uncocked looks bunch up and is really tight. Should it be this tight? Re-cocking it is going to be really tough based on how tight it is.

Its going back to where I bought it and their going to send it for repair.

I have the same rifle but cocking it is very heavy, how would I make that any smoother, at first I thought the spring inside the bolt is too tight but it doesn’t seem adjustable. Anyone?
@BROTUNED
@BROTUNED Жыл бұрын
The spring that’s giving the tension is the firing pin spring and I honestly wouldn’t modify that it could cause you to have light strikes. What you could do is polish the ramp and any interfacing surfaces. That would make it a lot smoother for sure or just dry fire and run the bolt a lot. This will smooth things out as well as build muscle memory on the trigger and finger which will help more than you’d think

A big shout out to you for this procedure. I plan on running a single-shot feed ramp in this chamber but do not know Savage Axis system too well. Do you see any issues with taking out the ejector and keeping it out? I dont need it for ejection purposes but if it has a secondary purpose of keeping the bolt interior clean and/or putting pressure against the datum or bolt hasps then I'll just leave it be. Thanks! how did that Axis shoot for you, BTW? Seems like a nice affordable factory action.
@BROTUNED
@BROTUNED 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks my axis with hand loads shoots .5 to .75 5 shot groups all day long they are very under rated and strong actions. Unlike the open top Remington’s and savages they are a lot stiffer and also did some videos with a Remington model 770 with the same style action and it too is a tack driver but the bolt and bushing system in the Remington is total trash but it’s a great rifle for long range where there is no pressure to quickly chamber another round fast. Have a look on my channel the video is long range shooting for under $300

I very much appreciate the link. I started searching through your videos and saw some other things that peaked my interest. No attention span at all 🤣. No man I was watching some of your more recent 22 long rifle stuff. You know a lot of the guys down at the local sandpit Scoff at me when I say, "if there is one major thing that I contribute to how well I shoot, it would be 22LR". It helped me get rid of a flinch that started early in life, they keep cost down, there are very few restrictions on them, and most of all, they are fun as hell to shoot. I don't need to get ringcut and my shoulder broken to prove that I am a man. And I won't hesitate to say I'm a better shooter because of 22LR. Thanks for the link brother. But you have me salivating over that CZ 22LR rifle 🤣.

here's a wee tip I just found while cleaning my Savage Axis/Edge the bolt is a precision part right, I disassembled it to clean it, an fuk me upside down back an forward getting the damned thing recocked was, to put it mildly "a BITCH" well through trial and error I found a wee trick that might help others in the future, When you have the bolt reassembled and ready to recock and slide into the action, but christ it's hard to get the pin into the cocked position, now I'm not weak nor do I have soft hands, but christ "I" could not get the thing in the cocked position, " the trick is don't tighten the bolt nut, in fact leave it loose, then cock it and slide into the action, but first make sure there in no ammo in the rifle, pull the trigger, to discharge position when inserted into the action, then the hex screw at the back of the bolt will be clear, and you can now insert the allen key and tighten the bolt assembly fully, just thought the Axis/Edge guy's out there could use this.

He didn't know he purchased a Savage, I was able to determine this by talking to him about the looks of the rifle.. I have yet to see it but it will be turning into a project. @rbm6184
@rbm6184 7 жыл бұрын
Haha. It ain't easy. :-) Make sure the spring is in and then put the bb ontop. I used a very small standard or flathead screwdriver to hold the bb down while I reinserted the extractor with the bb indent on the bottom. Slide the extractor (flat edge inside) in over the bb while it pushing the screwdriver back so the the bb stays in under the extractor and snaps in place. Do this working inside an on end large cardboard box (use a light if need be) so you don't loose the bb if it flies off and it probably will a few times before you get it. Like I said, it ain't easy. Don't lose the bb. Hope this helps.

@@BROTUNED Good video regardless of some being out of focus. Anyone who needs the info can follow along easily. There are to many people who want the best graphics right now and can't stand anything else. If they can't recognize the parts on their bolts as they're watching you, then they need to leave firearm disassembly to someone who has patience and basic technical skills. I spent 13 years in the Canadian military, half in the infantry and half as a weapons tech (gunsmith) so I have heard lots of whining from people over the years. (from unqualified ones at that) One of the confirmation tests they gave us was to send us to lunch, disassemble all the machine guns and put all the parts into garbage cans and tell us to put them back together on a timer.
