This is the last book he did before his sabbatical due to the cartoon

This was the very last comic Jim drew before his move to Italy, he probably cranked it out while packing.

Yeah, these look like the most basic breakdowns, with the least interested eye for layouts. Tracks that his mind isn't on it at all.

You know Brass but Bennett did three issues of comics for Marvel before any Image stuff and they're all interesting, even though he's clearly hired as a Jim Lee clone (Uncanny 303, X-Men Unlimited 4 and X-Men 27). He also inks Capullo for X-Force 24 and it works really REALLY well.
@teambloodforce4 ай бұрын
You're right about that X-Force issue, I didn't realize that was him. Shame he couldn't translate that into making his own figures look good. I think I will be checking out Brass at some point though, so I'll be able to go into more detail on his stuff.

Great vid! Always interesting when they show the credits with who did what (even if it's not exactly accurate), and you can compare and see the difference. But who really pays attention to the credits? It's just more stuff to read when you're there for the art haha.
@teambloodforce4 ай бұрын
I didn't really before, but I have to admit I'm doing it more and more often now. Doesn't necessarily make the book more interesting, but at least I can prepare myself sometimes.

You really should take a look at Brass. Richard Bennett gave it his all and its just an amazing testament of his abilities. If his figures were just slightly less wonky he'd been revered like Charest.

That's one of those ones I've flipflopped about whether to pick up. I know the detail level is absolutely insane, it really is just about the figures/ faces. I think you're probably right, I should check that out.

@@teambloodforce I've been lucky to grab the oversized b&w version of Brass 1 when it came out and the sheer amount of drawing on each page is insane. He just can't draw an attractive face to save his life lol

@@marczwaneveld2663 lol yep, that sounds like the issues I've seen. Gotta admire the hustle though, sweat equity goes a long way in my book.

Richard Bennett works doing storyboards for Tinseltown for big names like Nolan or the Russos this days. And if i remember wrong, Erik redraw this entire issue for the TP.
@teambloodforce4 ай бұрын
Okay, I've never heard that before. That makes me want to track down that trade now.
@DrLynch20094 ай бұрын
@@teambloodforce Sorry not for the TP, by the time SD #19 come out Larsen made a new issue #13 that is unrelated to the Lee/Bennett story.
@hygge_angstrom4 ай бұрын
Larsen didn't simply redraw issue #13; he came up with an entirely different srory as well. He gave a few reasons for this, but it boils down to the fact that he wanted every mainline issue of Savage Dragon to be his own.
@teambloodforce4 ай бұрын
@@hygge_angstrom That does make sense, it wouldn't be right for this to be the only SD issue not drawn by Erik. Even less so that it was kind of half-assed.

dude, i'm surprised you didn't mention that drawing of Alicia on page 3 where her neck looks like it is a foot long, lol!

There are obvious Larsen inks in Rob's X-Force - they are not the pages you showed.

Man, I was taking the letter writer's word for it, anything to avoid going back and rereading an X-Force issue.

Tom McWeeney!??!?! Of "ROACHMILL"?!! DAMN either he did that poster in his SLEEP or someone took his name and drew / inked it with a STICK! BTW Mitch Roachmill was one if not THE BEST independent comic nobody ever heard of!! I mean basing a character build on a COCKROACH and giving him CLINT EASTWOODS FACE AND PERSONALITY!? GENIUS! They kinda lost it at the end like Dave Simm with Cerebus but for a while it was my reason for comic collecting. I HIGHLY recommend checking out the first few if you can find them. Be warned though the humor is kinda weird as are the characters but it's still LEAGUES better than what Image was putting out at the time! IMO! :)
@teambloodforce4 ай бұрын
Cool, thanks man! Shit, I don't remember the last time I got independent recommendations. I'll try to look into that one, I don't usually have any problems with a weird sense of humour.
@marczwaneveld26634 ай бұрын
Yes it's the same Tom McWeeny. Not even an inker of his stature could fix the pure trash Jeff Rebner produced. The fact Rebner took over on Cybernary was such an insult to the legacy of Nick Manabat.
@robertgray13654 ай бұрын
I practically worshipped Jim Lee back then so this crossover was my most anticipated of the artist swapped issues and it was such a MASSIVE disappointment. Image really played fast and loose with that 'pencils' credit. It should have said 'stick figure layouts' because that looks to be all the work Jim put into those pages.
@teambloodforce4 ай бұрын
Yeah, from what the comments have been saying this was right before he took a sabbatical and moved to Italy, so he likely wasn't paying any attention to what he was doing. So there's a reason at least, though it does still negate the point of the event, which was to have some cool Jim Lee Dragon pages.
