Though not well known, this western is excellent despite some minor flaws. Character development, personal conflicts, loads of battles, (spoiler alert) even the attack on the stagecoach that shocked me when one important character to the story was shot at very close range. Geronimo is portrayed as a cold-hearted killer yet some semblance of humanity lurked beneath him. I rate this film 5 stars. Yes, I was very surprised the number of key figures that were killed. Worth watching everyone!

I am an old movie afficionado and l have never seen this one before and it is very well done and entertaining. A couple of things however , l don't believe this was the original name of the movie , but Geronimo. Second this 1939 movie uses an almost identical plot to the 1935 movie Lives of the Bengal lancers. The disgruntled Captain played by Preston Foster was played by Gary Cooper , the joker Sneezer , Andy Devine was played by Franchot Tone , completely different , the young Lieutenant Steele played by William Henry was a duplicate of Subalteran played by Richard Cromwell. Both the young guys were sons never seen for years by their fathers , one a General the other a Colonel who were all army and nothing but army , sticklers for duty and stern rigid discipline who were both absent fathers and husband's.

Shakespear claimed there are only a half dozen plots, but many variables. Westerns (action-adventure) tend to use the same very few plots and count on variables like: actors, locale, era, comedy-drama, etc

Especially Andy's sliding/climbing down the steep slope near final scenes; seriousness big contrast to today's more Lawfull approach to life. Reminds me of Moslem jihad crazyness

Some American Indians made money for their tribes after peac e. most of us know Chief Sitting Bull worked in some of the wild west shows. Quanah Parker made money ranching. Even Geronimo made money based on his celebrity status.

Usually Hollywood movies , like They died with their Boots On never have enough combatants , probably due to having to pay union rates for extras , yet here Geronimo has hundreds of warriors to take on a Cavalry regiment when in reality he only had 54 warriors and the US army dispatched 5000 troops to beat him , which was 1/3 of the total Military Strength. Now who was smarter , the US Army or Geronimo.

It is amazing how the total disreguard for the plight of the American Indians were presented in movies in this presentation era. Things today are worse then back then. Some of you that travel should go have a look at the Souix and see what they kive in and where the reservation is located. Look at the Navajo in New Mexico, that have no electricity and have to drive to Gallup to get water. What housing they have. Still hogans with no plumbing, no electrity they were promised by the female Democrat Governor. During Covid,Gallup turned them away from getting water. So all these old movies really shed a terrible light on them when they grew angry at the Americans doing various things to them. Payback in their eyes was justified. Sadly all of them are worse off today as they were then. Today they have alcholicism and drug problems plus no jobs and bad housing.

A lot depends on the location of the tribes. Where I grew up their are several small tribes. Between fishing and money paid the tribes for timber rights they did ok. But fishing income is down and many of the timber markets have gone to cheaper wood.
