Our interest today is in the Savage Model 99, a unique rifle that is missed dearly but will probably not make a comeback in the near future. What makes this gun so unique is that it is a lever action rifle with a rotary magazine. Yes, it really exists, and it was well liked by whitetail hunters.

It was in the early years of the last century that the whitetail population saw a steady increase in numbers. It was no surprise that deer hunting followed the same trend. In these days, it was the lever action rifle that ruled that sport. One of the most popular among these came from Winchester, the Model 94. Typically, it was used in .30-30. While most hunters chose this rifle, the real guys, the ones who actually knew what they were doing, would rather pick the Savage Model 99.

My father was a Marine sharp shooter in the pacific theater during WW2. He wrote to his brother that he was unhappy with the O3-A3 that he was using. His brother mailed him a Savage model 99 break-down chambered in .300 Savage and 10 boxes of ammo. He was able to use this weapon with great effectiveness till the end of the war. I still own this gun and have killed many deer with it, but can never stop thinking it has killed humans.

My grandfather numbered among those hunters "who really knew what they were doing", and his Modell 99, in .300 Savage, accounted for a LOT of deer... and even a couple of moose. That much-used, well-worn rifle still resides today in my safe, and still gets hunted. I'm not the hunter my grandfather was, but his rifle has never let me down when I've done my part.

For a period of about 50 years in the middle of the 20th century, the Savage 99 in .300 Savage was THE quintessential American deer rifle. It is a shame they are out of production, but as the video noted, the costs are too high to mass produce it these days. Savage seriously looked into it in the early 2000s, and polled lots of people on gun boards about whether they would be willing to pay premium prices for them. At the time, the number bandied about was $1200 a piece. The price of a Remington 700 at the time was between $400-500. Even at that price, they decided that it wouldn't be a worthwhile investment of their time and resources. This was despite many people being very interested. Maybe someday they will come out again in some form or another. Until then, there are still millions of them on the secondary market.

My dad got his .300 Savage in "57" and it was his "go to" rifle for antelope to elk, (at 100 yards or closer), and he didn't miss very often. Topped with a Weaver K4 scope, post and crosshairs. I can shoot one and one half inch groups with this combination all day. I understand his love for this rifle. A classic piece of Americana, and in time one of my boys, or my daughter will own this family heirloom. But not yet, not just yet.

Although I am a Winchester rifle collector, the rifle I used most for hunting for more than 50 years is my Savage 99 .300 Savage. IMO the perfect deer (and similar sized game) rifle. And though it was not my primary choice for elk hunting, it was always with me on numerous trips to hunt elk in Montana where it also killed several mule deer and 2 black bears. I haver never used anything but 180 gr. bullets for hunting and it is perfect! No scope, receiver mounted peep sight only.

This rifle has lots of power kzbin.infoUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL , hard recoil and a little heavier than expected which affects accuracy, especially when firing freehand or hunting small game. Really rough on sites, as it often moves inside mounting rings. Replaced sight with a UTG Bugbuster, which required medium height mounting rings, but improved accuracy while sighting in as shown in attached photo, at 20 yards using Gamo Match Diablo pellets at 7.56 grain. Nonetheless, I am still trying to figure out where to install the mounting rings on the scope to avoid it from sliding around, as it becomes misaligned after about 50 or 60 shots. Currently considering using heavier pellets at about 9 grain with different tips like the H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme or the Crosman Ultra Magnum to see if accuracy improves. Overall, I am having lots of fun with this rifle.

I have one in .300 Savage and use it on elk with 180 gr handloads. That said, it's heyday, at least around here in Wyoming, is long past. This rifle was popular here when hunting was on horseback- a lever gun fits well in a saddle scabbard. Lever guns don't have great triggers because of the design. The Savage 99 is no exception. You can't do much to improve its trigger without compromising safety. I'm left handed and have a soft spot for this retro design.

I use the 150 grain bullet as my primary load, if I need better down range performance, Nosler's 150 grain partition bullet delivers. I've also used the 165 grain by Hornady and Nosler. I have no complaints, except all .30 caliber bullets are hard to come by these days.

The Model 99 is so unique for a lever action rifle compared to the run of the mill tubular magazine lever guns. It could be loaded with higher BC bullets, and with the bolt locked back in the solid steel action, higher pressure loads were standard. My hope is technology will allow the model 99 to make a roaring comeback. Don't forget about the Winchester model 88, too.

Back in the day, there were only 2 that could shoot the spitzer bullets, the 99 savage and the 1895 Winchester of Browning design! But with the striker firing the Savage had the advantage but Winchester had a lot more calibers to choose from. You know, Winchester offered so many different cartridges but really didn't offer a lot of pointed ammo for them.

Can hand load certain ogive bullets depending on the bullet shoulder configuration to keep overall length within spec. Other feature is it balances perfectly on the receiver so easy to carry with the balance and rounded bottom on the receiver.

Took a chance around ten years ago at a local gun shop when I bought an old Savage 1899 takedown featherweight in 250-3000 made in year 1920. This old gun was in remarkable overall condition albeit having acquired a grey Parkerized finish along the way. I didn't have high expectations for how well it would shoot at the range and was used to the accuracy of my Winchesters, Marlins and my BLR. To my surprise it repeatedly printed one inch groups at 100 yards while bench rested and using 100 GR. Remington PSP Express Rifle cartridges and the factory iron sights. I immediately acquired a high level of respect for this old gun and the Savage 1899 in general. Given its low recoil and the superb accuracy of this super light weight 100 year old rifle, I would put it up against any modern .243.

My girlfriend hunts carrying her grandfathers .300 savage model 99 I've cleaned and handled this rifle and found it absolutely fascinating the rotary mag feature beyond a doubt I think inspired something else in my humble opinion the .300 sav is almost tailored for whitetail deer and similar game it is a very forward concept. The main reason this gun I dont think could be feasibly reproduced is it would result in a very expensive endeavor to approach the quality of craftsmanship fit and finish overall materials costs not saying they couldn't I just believe theres really less than a handful of big American gun manufacturers that are up to the task one of those being a name centered around lever action guns. They are still very coveted among hunters in the northeast. It's one thing to talk about them its another to hold an old rifle in your hands that was built properly to this extent it can be relied on to do its job for generations we have had advancements in CNC and automation but seem less able to capture that old world gunmaking unless you pay premiums.

It still goes to the deer woods regularly. Love the workmanship and accuracy. The cartridge indicator is a true work of art. You just don’t see this level of mechanical engineering anymore. I added a .99 in 243 to the collection when my kids reached shooting age. Still have it as well. Too may memories with both to ever consider parting with them. My dad, who fought in WW1 was a smart man and his choice was the Model 99 in .300 Savage! I remember my dad taking many Deer and Antelope and at least one Elk! It is the first center-fire rifle I ever shot and there is a nostalgic love for this rifle! Unfortunately, after dad passed away in 1971, the rifle was passed to my mother and then to my step-father who ended up, somehow, giving his son the rifle upon his passing! Why that happened, I will never know because he had no connection to the rifle, at all! After 40 years of looking, I finally have in my possession another, almost exact copy of dad's old .300 Savage rifle in the much-loved caliber! I love this rifle! The only difference is that dad's rifle had the round counter on the side and mine doesn't! Be that as it may, I really don't care! It will be with me on my next hunt! Thanks for showcasing this fine, accurate rifle!

When I turned 12 my dad had a new barrel put on the 300 and gave it to me. I barely shot it through my life because of the sentimental value, I wanted to keep it in pristine shape. I would love to own a model 99 Savage, the are beautiful rifles. My first deer rifle was a .300 Savage chambered rifle, custom made by my grandpa. It had a surplus Swedish Mauser bolt action group mated to a machined down .30 cal surplus machine gun barrel and mounted in a custom stock and had iron sights. One of a kind, but did take a few deer! The .300 Savage cartridge is a damn good deer cartridge in my opinion. Sorry, one other thing I can't resist mentioning is the vernacular in the video and maybe it's just a difference in location. I live in the western U.S. and we say lever action, not "leever" action. Also, we pronounce carbine as "carbeen". Not saying we are right, just got a chuckle out of hearing how things are pronounced different in other parts of our country. Great video!

That was a good history lesson, thank you. But that was then and this is now. I have always preferred an external hammer on a lever gun because you do not have to look or feel around to determine if the safety is on or not. Regardless of what features you like in a lever gun, the answer surely is Henry. While the rimfire Henrys have the tried and true half cock safety, the centerfire ones use a transfer bar, which requires no operator interaction. The brush gun Henrys have a tube magazine that can be unloaded like a .22 by removing the inner portion, so the rounds do not have to be worked through the action. The pointed bullet caliber Henry lever guns have a detachable box magazine, so they have all bases covered. The Savage 99 surely was great in it's day, but today's gun is a Henry.

Henry's are definitely very nice but I would not trade my savage 99's or Winchester levers for one. To each his own. Get all the Henry's you want and I hope you enjoy them the rest of your life. That will leave more savages and winchesters for me!!! 😁

I Love my Mod 99 in .308 win. It is a nice rifle to shoot accurate for hunting. The cool part is the rotary magazine, not too many folks ever seen one or knew there was such a thing. Then loading it up with pointed rounds in to a lever rifle really gets there attention.

Just for fun, I went and looked at what these are going for lately. As much as a good new rifle does. Went and looked for .300 savage ammo and saw a lot of out of stock and at $2.00 a pop. min when they don't have any. Looked at ballistics and looks quite accurate and powerful. A serious rifle.

The Savage 99 is a real gem of a rifle ... compared to other popular lever actions rifles it carries, points, and shoots for me better than my Winchester 94 which is also fine rifle, but it is no model 99 .. and I do believe it would give Henry a run for the money too .. love this design of the Savage 99. If Ruger can bring back production of the Marlin, why can't Savage apply some serious effort here .. these lever designs are a whole lot less complicated and modern machinery can overcome many of those production line concerns .. I find it interesting that those with good and even well worn 99's still don't want to part with them .. a modern caliber perhaps is in order, but really there was nothing a deer hunter would lack with that 300 Savage round in the northern States and Canadian wilderness, or the brush hunting in the southern States.

When the 1899 savage was built, pointed bullets were next to unheard of. It did not build the rotary magazine specifically to handle pointed bullets, that capability was just a happy coincidence, the same as its side ejection just happened to also accommodate scopes many years later when they became popular. And I am a fan of the 99, just recently having acquired another. I wish they would bring them back but they won't because people today just want bolts that can shoot .oo1 ich groups and tactical looking stuff that is semi automatic. Aesthetics and class are forgotten despite their established performance in the field. Today its sniping or how much lead can we get out there in 5 seconds.

Yes, I'd buy a new M99. Make mine a 338/284 for Sambar, and maybe a 6.5PRC. BTW, between the wars, the 22 hi-power was a commercial success in Australia. When I was young enough to hunt moose in northwest Ontario, I bought a Savage 99 C, loaded in 308 win, from a work mate, and immediately picked up a box of Win silvertip in 180 gr, and headed to the dump. I had mounted a 4X12 scope on see-through rings, and had bore-sighted it in, using the great iron sights. I found a half sheet of drywall, set up at 50 yds and fired a shot into the middle of the board, reloaded and aimed the scope on the bullet hole, 6" to the right, adjusted the scope, 15" right, with no adjustments,I fired again, just clipped the right edge, about 30". My last shot, I moved to 30yds and, aiming at the left edge, the shot hit 42" to the right. I gave the rifle a close inspection, and could see the for-end was bearing against the left side of the barrel, everything else seemed right and tight. At home, I floated the barrel, and measured the trigger pull at a crunchy 11 1/2lbs, so I cut a couple of turns off the hammer-spring, polished the sear, lapped the chamber, made up a sized, dummy round, and measured the rifling engagement, and loaded up shells with 0.030" jump space, max charge, I don't remember the powder I used, but the bullets, at 100yds, went into the same hole .barely touching the sides. The trigger was a crisp 31/2lbs and I let the barrel cool off between shots I have never fired ANY rifle as accurate as this late 70's 99C loaded with tailor-made ammo. I'm a retired machinist and tool & die maker, and have a passion for pistolsmithing on my own guns, and, what I think makes this gun accurate is the way the back of the bolt locks into that nicely fitted radius. Somebody screwed up, and produced THE most accurate lever action ever, when brought to it's full potential. The point to this is, my buddy sold me a lemon, but, with some skill and patience, I turned that $100 lemon into a $1,500 needle-driver. I don't have the gun any more, but ,I'm sure it's still hitting the mark, so, if you have one of these guns, give it some TLC, and it will amaze you PS, my jump distance for rifling engagement is absolute minimum SAFE at .030thou. be extremely careful, measure 3 or 4 times, and check every reload. If you use a different bullet, you'll have to re-measure, and re calculate the BOAL.
