Karting...never had more fun with my pants on than I did when I was racing karts. I ran an RMax kart for about 10 years in the early/mid Aughts. At the time, a rig was about 5k. That would have been a purpose built chassis from Tony, CRG, Arrow, etc. and a sealed RMax engine (30hp, 125cc water cooled two stroke). I bet I spent another 5-8k on things like tools, spare parts, driving suits, helmets, driving shoes, gloves, DAQ's, kart stand, etc. just to get going. From memory my consumables were around 3k per year including tires, chains, clutches, blah, blah, blah. Regardless, karting is probably the cheapest form of W2W racing. Took me about 2-3 years to learn setup, get into a testing regime, and generally learn to drive the thing properly. The cornering performance of a kart is astounding. We regularly saw 3g's on long sweepers. To get that kinda grip in a car you have to have an aero equipped formula car or something equivalent.
@chipsutcliffe71104 жыл бұрын
The acceleration of some karts is nothing to sneeze at, as well. My Rotax had 30 hp on a 200 pound kart. There are few vehicles with that power to weight ratio. Get a 6 speed shifter kart with 50 hp, and almost no vehicle can perform as well (under 100 mph). The track record at Sonoma (Sears Point) was held for many years by a kart.

Thanks for bringing this info to the masses who didn't know better already.

I've had such a blast getting to know the karts and the people around them, even managed to get a few podium finishes this year. One thing that turns me off to rental karts is the fact that if you weigh 185+ ps and get into a race where drivers weigh 120-140pds and have less or equal driving skill you will never be able to keep up.. An example is my son.. He weighs about 130pds 5ft8 and I'm 6ft1 190pds.. I have a ton of racing experience, yet when we get to the track he is always 2 to 3 tenths faster... Especially coming out of slow corners and on the straights he can gain at least 4-5 car lengths.. Like you said it's about having fun and it is, but when you join a championship and simply can't keep up with small drivers it kind of sucks!!🤪 Thanks for the great video!! Do some of you also run into this problem?

Great piece on karting... one main thing, and it might be due to the crap places I've been to, is really the consistency between each kart... this place seems to maintain their karts better, but I've been to places that steering for 1 kart is almost locked up, and you have to wrench it around to turn, where another kart actually steers... I would love to see some more detail on those advanced karts, less cladding etc... and how much faster they might be on the track.

The problem with Karting and I have this happen locally is YOUR personal weight matters sooooo much. The time record holder at our local kart track is a 12 year old who weighs 96lbs. A 200lb male has a massive disadvantage compared to someone 150lbs or less. There’s no way around power to weight in karting, and it kills the desire to open wheel as a normal 6ft plus male adult.
