We reviewed the updated 2024 Porsche Cayenne, one of the best-performance luxury SUVs in the world. The updates come at a steep price, and we discuss who this is for and what you are getting. Few can match the performance. Others to consider are Audi Q5, BMW X5, Mercedes GLE, and Genesis GV80.

As a 911 owner, I completely agree the Cayenne is too much money. But I just bought a 2016 Cayenne turbo (certified) for 44k. It has new tires and brakes and looks and drives like new. These vehicles depreciate rapidly and that makes them a great buy on the used market (unlike the 911).

They depreciate rapidly because repair and maintenance is expensive, so used car buyers are engaging in a risk and people with more money prefer to buy new. People so easily neglect the market principles at play. Used cars are not a big bargain. They are cheap for a reason.

Best blend of small SUV practicality with sports sedan dynamics, with the bonus of mostly VW-level maintenance costs. I also do most of my own work; it’s needed very little outside of fluid changes in 2 years and 20K miles, it’s easy to work on, and even at 130K miles it’s butter smooth and rattle free. @user-gz9tq9fo5b Data driven reviewers are rarely rewarded. Honestly in the car youtube space only Engineering Explained really seems to have that following when it comes to super nerds, maybe Matt Moreman though he is a little dry (still great no hate). SG is amazing and I love them but you know as well as I do the easy way for followers is more pomp and circumstance than nerdy substance. If the easy button was actual deep substance or for perspective buyers SG, Speed Phenom, Tyre Reviews, and Harry's Garage would probably be the top channels. Just my 3 cent. Wtf do I know edit. I remember an 812 GTS review from Autocar by Matt Prior. It was a great review, but there were a handful of comments that were upset he wasn't going wild in the wet in what looked to be south of 10c. But it was a solid review for actual perspective buyers. Not for armchair youtube racers. The audience is just smaller and it's not as exciting.

You nailed the Porsche buyer - I had a 2008 Cayman, my wife a 2019 Macan and both vehicles put a smile on our faces every time we drove them. No other cars we've owned provide so much driving pleasure and excitement. We're retired now in our early sixties and just ordered a 2024 Cayenne S - my wife simply wouldn't have the base model and I couldn't argue with her! We just stopped full-time RVing with a 43' 27,000 lb New Horizons RV pulled by a RAM 5500, a somewhat scary move we made back in 2020, but we have a lot of great memories for that crazy decision. Same here, we know we have fewer years left to truly enjoy life and are doing our best to live life to the fullest!

not every SUV has to be geared for the mass market and have the most space. Mazda and Porsche have found good niches and they make extremely fun and sporty vehicles. There are plenty of other options out there if you want big and soft, but there are those of us that will sacrifice a little bit of utility for driving engagement and fun. Glad these vehicles exist. just recently got a Mazda, CX, 90 after testing the Kia telluride, and Hyundai palisade, and Toyota grand Highlander, and the Mazda is so much better for me personally.

I’ve had a new 2024 cayenne S since early September. It’s my 8th Porsche and second Cayenne. Great vehicle. Great engine. However, I agree it is too expensive. Porsche prices have increased 15%-20% in the last 3 years. Enough is enough. As great as the cayenne S is for what it is supposed to be, it’s too expensive. This will probably be my last cayenne and with the hassle buying a 911 has become, may be my last new Porsche.

Really love the way you guys discuss the pros and cons of the vehicles you review. I love this new Cayenne, but like Mark would NEVER buy another one after my last experience with a Cayenne S. That was a 2016 that I purchased for $85,000 (which, frankly, is where this gen should be priced, not at $135K). Put 60,000 miles on it and went to trade it in for a new one...and was offered $25,000 by a Porsche dealer in my area (Northern NJ). I was stunned. Ever since, I've watched how used Cayenne's depreciate - and frankly, what happens to them is similar to what happens to most luxury SUVs, including Range Rovers...just about 50% depreciation after 3 years. I'm sorry, but that's just throwing money out the window; fine if you've got it and don't feel it, but that doesn't work for me. A similarly priced new 911 will still be worth around 90% of what it cost brand new after three years...these luxo boats are for the wealthy, not for Porsche lovers who have saved all their life for a model from this iconic brand

Buying a luxury sports brand vehicle is never a wise investment. Buy a honda. But then you own a honda and what will friends, family, and strangers think of you? There’s the Cayenne and then there’s every other 2 row SUV. Yes it’s expensive, but for a reason. It’s a niche product and caters to people who value driving dynamics above all else. I have owned Range Rover sport SVR, several X5’s, Audi Q8 and GLE. The cayenne is by far my favorite of them all. Fast, amazing handling, very comfortable and a great off roader. What else could one want from a high end luxury SUV? I understand people wanting more practicality/space etc from their SUV but if that’s more important then people should consider other options. That said, for people with more than a modicum of financial sense, it’s a terrible vehicle to purchase new. The depreciation is brutal. I thought I was being smart when I purchased my then 4 yr old 2014 Cayenne Turbo S for $70k with 25k miles (MSRP $164k). After 5 years and with 85k miles I toyed with the idea of trading it in on a 911 but was offered a laughable $20k for it. I decided to keep it. As for maintenance, it is straight forward and reasonably priced if one does DIY for basic stuff. If buying used I would highly recommend an exclusionary extended warranty for the longest term/mileage possible. Mine has already paid out $15k+ for stuff like leaking valve cover gaskets, control arms and air suspension repair, which is still an ongoing issue that the dealership service department has been trying to fix for the past 8 months while I drive an absurdly overpriced 2024 base Macan ($75k) loaner. Despite all its issues, I’d still get another Cayenne, just not new, and with extended warranty, because no other SUV drives like it.

Mark nailed it. I had a Cayenne diesel but sold it because I couldn't even fit my lawnmower in it. It was a fantastic highway cruiser that reminded me of the '80s Mercedes turbodiesel sedans. The range was excellent and even towed well but just didn't have the utility of other SUVs.

As someone who drives the previous generation (2019) model often, I agree with the points made that the interior doesn't function as well as it's rivals. It lacks a lot of storage space for larger items. I often find myself moving my phone two or more times in a single drive just because there isn't a good place to keep it. You definitely give up some interior "norms" for that crest on the hood. Me personally, I would gladly give them up every single time. I guess that makes me the demographic Porsche aimed for. I grew up around the big German SUV's, I've spent a lot of time in them, and the Cayenne has always been my personal favorite, but I do agree you give up a lot of other usable features, like storage, in the pursuit of driving feel and connection. A GLS is much larger, much more space. That space is very noticeable while driving however. The X5 is similar in size, but in my opinion lost it's soul along it's journey to it's current version. The Rover does plush unlike anyone else, but you won't want to throw it around a corner like a Cayenne begs to be. Simply put if you have the money for any of them, go test drive them all before you make a decision. Don't just read/watch reviews online. Do the leg work, put up with the salesmen, and see which one you genuinely want to live with. Great and honest review. Keep it up guys.

My wife drives a 2024 Cayenne V6. Compared to her previous Cayenne (2019), this one drives much better. To me, the 2019 was the least Porsche like compared to all the Cayenne models that came before it. I like the subtle styling updates to the exterior, and the rear doesn’t look bloated like the previous model. The interior is a mixed bag, and I agree with a lot of the criticisms. Even with the full leather upgrade, it’s lost some of the quality/look/touch of the previous generation. However, unlike most other manufacturers that stick giant displays in front of the driver and center stack, Porsche fully integrates the displays for a nice, finished look. The price increase from the 2019 model is substantial. Without going crazy with options, her Cayenne is right at $100K, and to me, it doesn’t feel that special inside. But, and here’s the big one, it drives so much better than anything in its class. It is comfortable when you want it to be, but if you want to drive it in a sporty manner, you will immediately understand the time and money Porsche spent on chassis development and tuning.

A quick comment on Mark's theory that Porsche and Mazda don't understand the SUV market: I think they do, but they also understand they can't compete with the volume leaders. Instead of going for the largest market share (people who want lots of space, storage, and practicality,) they're focusing on the segment of people who do prioritize driving dynamics and character. There might not be enough of us to make them the volume leaders, but there's a large enough market segment to make their offering profitable.

I had the previous, pre-facelift E3 that was rear-ended by a drunk driver during the supply shortages of the pandemic. I really wanted to get another Cayenne, but couldn't in good conscience pay the 10-20K markups, that dealerships were hoisting on due to lack of inventory, for the same vehicle. Ended up getting a lexus (the only brand that wasn't marking up at the time), and its something I regret so much. I get what Mark's argument, that the functionality of the Cayenne isn't up to snuff. In my experience however, its much easier to forgive poor functionality in exchange for a better driving experience, than it is to forgive a bad driving experience for better functionality.

We have a Macan S and while you *absolutely* pay more for options you’d find standard in Japanese rivals and most German rivals at that price point, the feeling from behind the wheel makes it more than worth it. The handling is incredible and the build quality is superb. Option it with PASM and Air Suspension (in warranty, for the love of your wallet) and it’s a cushy cruise missile that can take a hairpin faster than it has any business doing while hauling a few things in the back.

As an owner of a 2022 Cayenne, I see it more as a tall sports sedan. It's substantially shorter that the BMW X5 and most other SUV's. My Cayenne has about the same amount of interior storage, passenger space and trunk space as the Mercedes, Lexus and Volvo sedans I've owned. It actually has much more rear seat legroom and headroom than a Mercedes E-class. And my Cayenne has a trailer hitch which I use very frequently to carry a bicycle rack. Try getting an OEM trailer hitch on a sedan. I'm not sure what kind of utility Mark is looking for. If you're carrying a lot of people, small children and all their crap then buy a minivan. But a minivan doesn't drive anything like a Cayenne which is just plain fun to drive. I doubt if I'll ever get high centered on snow in the Cayenne like I did in all the sedans I mentioned and the Toyota Sienna I sold when I bought the Cayenne. I'll just raise the Cayenne up on its air suspension. After 15 months of ownership, I've found my Cayenne to be both practical and pleasurable and I plan to drive it for many years. I may eventually buy another one unless something better comes along. Edit: I should have mentioned that I had planned to order a Panamera Sport Turismo but when I finally got an allocation for one in August 2022, some Panamera were arriving from the factory without all ordered features due to parts shortages. That's when I realized that a Cayenne SUV was essentially a "lifted" Panamera and drove amazingly similarly. The Porsche dealer happened to have an in-stock Cayenne equipped mostly like the Panamera I would have ordered so I bought that. The Cayenne's interior and cargo area are VERY similar to that of the Panamera Sport Turismo except for the Cayenne having more rear seat leg and headroom. So ... Mark should look at the Cayenne as being a lifted Panamera or the Panamera as being a lowered Cayenne.

I have a unique PoV since I have a 2023 Cayenne e-Hybrid. I use my car to tow a boat, so because of that requirement we kind of had to go Cayenne (7.700 lbs). I also wanted the Cayenne for it's PHEV drivetrain (its one of the only PHEVs that can do real towing) and its driving dynamics. I won't lie - I think Porsche is guilty of highway robbery on some of their options. And I did take a long, LONG look at the X5 and nearly went that route. But in the end, I am happy with my Cayenne.

A 2007 Cayenne feels like a tank compared to this new one. Cheap plastic everywhere, doors DO NOT feel substantial as Jack said, they feel ordinary and I was shocked to discover the rubber wheaterstrips are attached to the door with adhesive tape! The screen cluster looks cheap, the stalks are o par with any Kia and the steering wheel feels synthetic and plasticky. As opposed with past Porsche models the materials have little substance, are thin and feel hollow. Sorry but this review is very biased and at this pricepoint it is totally unacceptable for a person that knows one or two things about the "perceived quality". Unless you are a snob.

I own a 2023 X5 45e and newly a CX-90 Phev and test drove a Cayenne recently and have to agree with the other that the Cayenne isnt worth it anymore, yes the steering feel and body control is better than our X5 but the X5 is a much better ''SUV''. The CX-90 is an interesting offering, less boring to drive but a little bit more compromised than the vanilla 7 seaters. I also owned a Macan GTS and the CX-90 replaced it. I lost the sound but I still have that tactile steering that make the drive more fun. The X5 is for when we just want to be relax and enjoy luxury. Thanks for another great review guys !!

As someone who has had Audis and Porsches, the new gen Porsches seem to be borrowing from and following Audi way too much. Audi executes Audi better, and Porsche should stick to being Porsche, forget all the tech and focus on driving and keeping the price fairly reasonable. You guys nailed it. These cars cost too much for what you get.

The problem with these "sport" SUVs is that they are compromised. They are not a sports car and often times sacrifice the strengths of an SUV in the first place. Porsche's attempt to bridge that gap is very well done, however its difficult to justify the price tag. Interior space is often why someone opts for an SUV in the first place and in the American market seems to fall short. Too many people just get this for the badge.

I found it very interesting that this review called the BMW X5 the Cayenne’s direct competitor. I own an Audi Q5 and a Porsche Cayenne. When I bought the Q5 I thought of the X3 as its competition and considered a Q7/8 for which I felt the X5 was comparable. When I bought the Cayenne, I didn’t even think of a GLE or X5. The Range Rover and the Benz G wagon were the competition in my mind at the price point. You might argue the X5 M variant is competitive. To which I would say, nope, RSQ8 is the comp. I just think of BMW, Mercedes and Audi as competitors, Porsche is an entirely different level/brand to me.

(8:23) The 2024 Cayenne E-Hybrid gets 45 miles of all-electric range in city/urban/stop-and-go driving (which is where a PHEV should be driven in electric-only mode, not at highway speeds), according to Kyle Conner's range testing. See his KZbin video on this, and his range-testing video on the GLE 450e if you ever decide to review that.

First off, great review as always! I love these guys! We brought our 911 in for an oil change over the Thanksgiving break & got a Macan loaner, it was a 2024 with 800 miles on it. Base level trim, but still well equipped. MSRP of $75,000! We drove it from Dallas to Houston and back. (Obviously we drove it back.) I agree with all the comments about Porsche removing the center consul gear selector in the new Cayenne; I loved having it there in the center of the 911 and it was especially nice in the Macan while driving. Just another place to put my hand during a long cruise… anyway it would probably just take some getting used to. Why didn’t they put it as a stock like Mercedes? After almost 1000 miles over the holiday, I realized that the 911 is the only real Porsche... Was the build quality the same? Yes. Was the styling superb? Yes. But what about the driving dynamics? There is nothing, NOTHING, comparable to the driver placement close to the road in the 911, with the engine behind you, the aerodynamics, the amazing transmission, that’s just all there is and every other Porsche model is trying to be like that, and it just isn’t.. this new 2024 Porsche Cayenne is absolutely gorgeous on the outside and I love it. I’m sure the inside is fantastic, I don’t even need to sit in that, I can smell it already and feel it and know that it’s awesome. That all being said, it’s a soccer mom car. Just get a friggin Tahoe.

100% agree with Mark and I currently drive a 2022 Cayenne and my previous car was a 2020 Cayenne S. The interior ergonomics are horrendous, as is the cargo space. Finally, the PCM infotainment system is really subpar. You can tell that German software developers created it because they just don’t get it when it comes to usability and UX in general.

I’ve driven and owned lots of luxury and non-lux vehicles. In my experience Porsche builds the best quality vehicles. The only exception is maybe Lexus. Very different brands with different purposes. They are the only brands I will buy now with the exception of something one-off. I would own the previous gen of this car but don’t need the space. I have a Macan GTS instead. Sportier because it is smaller and weighs less.
@evanetter
@evanetter 6 ай бұрын
How’s the transmission in the GTS? Is it different from the base Macan? I commented earlier about how we had a 2024 Macan loaner during the Thanksgiving holiday and I just didn’t think the transmission or the base engine that we had came anywhere close to the 911 we had in service.
@Closertotruth2
@Closertotruth2 6 ай бұрын
@@evanetter I personally don’t like the base Macan due to the 4 popper engine. The Macan S and GTS have a 6 cylinder which makes them totally different cars. My previous Macan was an S. My current one is a 2023 GTS. Even though the claimed horsepower bump stated by Porsche is significant I do not find much difference in street driving. The S probably is delivering near 400 hp rather than 375. My advice would be buy the S.
@evanetter
@evanetter 6 ай бұрын
@@Closertotruth2 but the transmission, though, how is that in the Macan? Fun story…after we got back from the thanksgiving break, we went to go pick up our 911, which was a lease, and they told us we were nearing our mileage limit, BUT that we had positive equity…I won’t tell you how much we ended up making but it was enough that we decided to turn it in early. We got a Jeep Wrangler 4xE a few days later and are shopping around for a more luxury type sedan to fill the void left by the 911. It was a 2021.
