A lot of SUV drivers, like people in general, are in denial. This vehicle, as presented, is up to the task of many Americans on the road, carting kids around, doing sales calls, or taking them to work to live their life. But many will look past its intrinsic goodness, and carp about it like people are cross shopping this with a BMW X5 or a Porsche Macan, or its inadequacies in the Camel Trophy. Once again, a great review Savagegeese; as always your presentation is next level. Bravo!

We have the V6 AWD version of the RAV4 and I just love it. With 150K miles so far I just can't get rid of it. In our household there's just my wife and me driving but we have 3 vehicles. We got the RAV4 when our son was born to haul all this baby stuff around. Now that's he's grown enough where we don't need to haul a bunch of baby stuff we really don't need it anymore but I just can't bring myself to sell it because I love the powerful V6 in a vehicle that size. I've had offers to buy it but I refused. Since we got the RAV4 we've had 2 turn overs of our cars (my wife is on her second car since the RAV4 and I'm on my second also). She has her car and I have mine and we basically share the RAV4. If I were ever to let go of our V6 RAV4 that is only to replace it with the RAV4 Prime but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Auto HV/ EV mode, sport mode and sport on transmission with, traction control off, 85 degrees out on Texas flat road pavement. Gas Tank was half full and EV battery full with no wheel spin due to 32 psi on tires. (Normal psi is 35) The car does well in moderate off-road and did great in the Texas snow and ice storm. The car also has charge mode that people don’t talk about that when cruising on the highway it will charge the battery back up just as fast as level 2 charging. There is a huge aftermarket accessories for the RAV4 so that’s a big bonus too. The premium package also has a 1500watt generator that definitely comes in handy.

I love my '12 V-6 Rav4. Plenty of power, small on the outside big on the inside. I'm 5' 11"and can comfortably sit behind myself with the driver's seat properly adjusted for me. I've filled the rear with over 500 lbs of sand (in sealed bags) no problem, it did smooth the ride out. The trans isn't anything special and I'd like a gear between 3 and 4. Third is a little low for around town cruising and 4th is a little too tall, 5th is ridiculous unless on the freeway. The 4wd hook is solid, even with the mediocre tires that came with it when I bought it. After this initial review it looks like I'll be keeping mine, with only 56K on the clock it's good for a long time.
@rightlanehog31514 жыл бұрын
@@realkarfixer8208 As I mentioned in another comment, I have never met a RAV4 V6 owner who was not happy with it. Compared to the base Generation 3 models, it had nearly 100 extra HP, 2,000 lbs more towing capacity and a fuel consumption penalty of only 2 mpg. That generation also has the back seat that slides back and forth and the hidden cargo compartment under the hatch so what's not to like? They should bring back the V6 for today's high priced RAV4 Adventure and TRD models and make everything else a traditional or plug-in Hybrid. Finally, where I live there is NO price premium for the V6 in the used market so it is a better deal than ever. Take good care of yours. :)

I've been driving my "new" '21 Prime (bought used with 22 K miles on it, for 40K, perfect condition) for a month now, my previous car was a plug in '13 Prius. It took me a while to realize, once back home and driving my usual commute and running errands etc., that this car is not only the quickest car I've ever owned, it also uses the least gas, and I'm 74. That's a pretty good trick! Besides selling the Prius, I also sold my 2000 RAV4, as I only needed it during the winter months, now I have one car, that EXCEEDS the Prius economy (I have free/surplus solar power so charging costs are not an issue), hauls ass when needed, and also AWD. Another benefit over the Prius, it pretty much looks like any other SUV, whereas the Prius was instantly recognizable...., so I feel like I have less of a target on my back when I'm driving at 65 mph on the 80 mph list interstates where I live. 75 was as slow as I drove the Prius, not wanting to perpetuate the image many have of the car, ha ha. The Prime is almost a sleeper EV, 99% of the gen pub won't identify it as one, most think its a typical gas hog SUV, gettingmaybe 25 mpg, I find that amusing.

If there's one thing I can give Toyota Credit for regarding their Future Vehicles, it's that they're going to implement it over time in a proper manner. 20 Years is a Good amount of time for people to adjust and decide for themselves whether they want to have a Plug-In or Electric Vehicle or Not. IMO, I just don't see it working out, but at least they're giving people time to try it out. Regarding the RAV4 Prime, It's an Excellent Vehicle that while I'm not a fan of, I can no doubt seeing this being a big sell out in the Western States (Primarily due to said states forcing people to buy said 'Energy-Efficient' Vehicles or risk unconstitutional taxation) Maybe I'm missing an Audience somewhere, but the RAV4 has it's buyers, no question about it. Car and Driver got this off in even less than the stated Toyota specs. They did 0-60 in 5.4 secs. How is that not great for a SUV in this class? Anything faster would cost way more. You didn't seem to put it in Sport mode to get the fastest time.

So glad Toyota sent you one of these. It is really on my short list and as much as I love Alex on Autos for all the details I really wanted to hear your take on how it handles. It would be an EV + highway cruiser for me. Your summary is spot on my use case.

"A little there to do off road and trails'. You should see the other vids of off road in the Prime. I'd say more than a little. No, it isn't a 4 Runner, and it doesn't have proper locking diffs or a low range, but it does pretty well. It is more capable than most other crossovers.

mcgaurya000 Why is it so limited ?
@0hypnotoad04 жыл бұрын
@@Summerbeeuty Because Toyota took a decade to make a good electric vehicle, and now there's no supplier left to sell them batteries. Manufacturers who are actually serious about making EV's set up their supply chains 10 years ago. Also, this is probably just a compliance vehicle to get ZEV credits or some shit like that.

I think Toyota has done really well with this car, I personally think if u want the 5.7 0-60 get the xse, because it comes with better and wider tyres. Motortrend or Car and Driver was even able to get 5.6

So will changing out the tires change the driving dynamics of the Prime for the better?
@BLR1GBattlemaster4 жыл бұрын
Just remember, the Prime is like 900 lbs heavier than a regular Rav4. Imagine driving a Rav4 with 5 other people in it, and that's what taking turns and braking would be like.
@WAN2TREE44 жыл бұрын
400 lbs one reviewer said
@BLR1GBattlemaster4 жыл бұрын
@@WAN2TREE4 That's compared to the Hybrid version. And that reviewer is wrong too. It's 500 lbs heavier than the hybrid version, and nearly 900 lbs heavier than just the gas version
@rockinggator9693 жыл бұрын
The extra EV battery is like 500 pounds and is mounted on the bottom center of the vehicle. That should help with a lower center of gravity for the extra weight vs. actual passenger weight. I think they also changed the suspension to help mitigate this as much as possible, but yeah it's a lot heavier than the vanilla Rav4.
@c_b50604 жыл бұрын
(1) 14:55 "If you're going to use this as … a highway cruiser …" Are you saying this vehicle would be good for a road trip (500 miles in a single day)? With constant passing of other cars on the road, would the battery slowly run down, or would the times during which you are not passing other cars be enough time to restore the battery charge? To ask this a different way: after driving non-stop for 400 miles, would the battery still have sufficient charge available to quickly pass other vehicles? (2) I don't have any place for a plug-in charger. Would it be reasonable to charge the battery with only the gas engine while driving (that is, NEVER use a plug-in charger)?

I'll be keeping my '12 v-6 Rav4 for a long time, but not buying a Hybrid or BEV because of potential battery replacement costs make as much (little) sense as not buying a gas car because of the potential engine replacement costs.
@0hypnotoad04 жыл бұрын
@@realkarfixer8208 Yeah, that's a really great way of putting it. The little hybrid and PHEV batteries that cycle almost daily have lasted over a decade now, so with these large-form EV batteries that only do a partial cycle once a week, I have a hard time imagining they'll fail before the cars are rust-buckets.
