That’s why I went from owning dodge and VWs to owning 3 Toyotas. The only reason I have a ford is because Toyota doesn’t offer an f350. It’s not hard to guess which vehicle makes those most trouble out of a 01 Tacoma, 15 tundra, 10 Camry, and 04 f350

Don’t be so sure a Tesla guy wouldn’t buy this RAV4. I am a Tesla guy and I think this RAV4 Prime has some useful advantages...in the cold, in mild off-road situations, and in cases where long range is favored. A 42 mile all electric range is enough to cover my daily commute. I think your summary about Toyota becoming a technology company and Tesla becoming a manufacturing company is spot on. And this is good for EV adoption in general.

@@evhan Dude that would be so dope! Ohh that's good to know, I've been in a Rav 4 in person but not a Model Y. One thing I do want to note from the Rav 4 is that for some reason the door handles are really cheap feeling? They feel like a big hollow piece of plastic, it's weird that they would build something with cheaper materials when you touch that piece every time you get in and out of the car.

After 2 months of daily driving, I am getting 53 miles of EV range in my Prime. I live in a very flat area, plus using climate control (or not) influences the EV range. But with non-aggressive starts and mindful climate control usage, I'm getting well above the 42 EV range advertised. This seems to be a case of under promised and over delivered.

I have had the base mode RAV4 prime since late August and LOVE it. Commute to work every day all electric and have been off road and on long camping trips. Have filled gas tank 4 times since I bought it. One thing to keep in mind, Toyota base model ~39K, with some upgrades and dealer add ons mine was closer to 44k BUT it qualifies for the full $7500 tax credit whereas Tesla = no tax credit. The 42 mile battery range is sufficient for most people. I can go back and fourth to work and charge at night and go a long time before I use up all the gas in the tank. I think they’re exactly right in saying that Tesla is a technology company trying to be a car company, and the reverse for Toyota. Speaking as a Prius Prime owner I’d say that, all in all, Tesla is doing considerably better at becoming a car company than Toyota is at becoming a tech company, *but* it’s more important that these be consistently-reliable cars than to be tech gadgets. So all in all, I think the two companies are running about even.

Yep, if the rav4 prime was just a bit cheaper and could tow 3500lbs It would have the potential to finally pull me away from diesel. (or rather I would prefer a tacoma or 4runner hybrid - but I think I could make do with a rav4) I absolutely love that this would give me most of my day to day usage on electricity while living in society but still be practical for more remote work without electricity access (plus I just love toyota, my first car was one and I think I trust them more than most companies - although my current vw diesel is a trooper too) Good towing, plug in, and off-road performance would all need to align for me to switch to a hybrid, but they are getting very close to a perfect vehicle. I'm putting away a quarter of my wages for the next few years to buy a new car, so maybe when I can actually afford one they will meet all my needs - they are close right now

Both cars can do that quite well. The main difference in terms of practicality is that the Tesla is all battery, which means you can use a lot more power (e.g. sleep in it running the AC for about a week), BUT you need the battery to drive which means ideally you need a way to charge it before arriving and shortly after leaving, adding some extra steps depending on how far you go. They both have pros and cons, where the Y has a mattress sized trunk (plus AC) to give a great benefit to car campers, while the Rav4 has less limitations around needing to rely on charging. Though if you camp at a place suitable for RVs, you may be able to plug both vehicles in which changes it up too.

Also, Rav4 is much cheaper considering that it is fully loaded while being eligible for the tax credit. Also, 0-60 in 5.4 is beyond enough. Leopold yes Tesla’s definitely see range drops in cold temps. Not 50%, but I’ve seen reports of people getting 65-70% of stated range due to various conditions. I owned and model 3 for the past year and can say from experience that unless you are driving in virtually perfect conditions and sticking to speed limits, you don’t get eve EPA. EVs seen much greater impact to the range than an ICE vehicle does when factoring these things in. Cold weather is obviously something you can’t control, so it will have a negative impact on range if you are driving in it.

This video definitely needs to be revisited given the multiple price increases on the Model Y. A few things to consider on this video. Full disclaimer, we own a 2018 Model 3 and a 2012 standard Prius (still going strong). 1) The Model 3 and Model Y are not luxury vehicles as stated in the video. Tesla purposefully goes for a minimalist approach to the interior, which sort of conflicts with the standard of being a luxury vehicle. I can tell you as a Model 3 owner of nearly 4 years, the minimalist approach starts to get annoying after a while. Just to open the glove box is more complicated than it needs to be, having to press the car emblem on the screen and then look for the glove box button of a crowded screen full of buttons. And with Tesla's OTA upgrades, sometimes the glove box button can get moved on the screen. Very annoying and unnecessary. We did get to drive a Model X recently as a loaner and it just had a standard button next to the glove box which was great. Why they don't do this in all of their vehicles is beyond me. 2) We have the long range Model 3. Though it is "rated to 315-ish" miles, we have never personally experienced this much distance. The most we have gotten on a full, 100% charge is about 280 miles. The rated miles is typically achieved on a track and not under normal conditions such as uphill driving or needed moments of acceleration to get around drivers. 3) Tesla is Bush league when it comes to delivering a vehicle without issues. Go online and you'll get plenty of stories of people receiving their car with multiple defects. We personally experienced this ourselves. Great car to drive, but only after dealing with the poor execution of delivery and subsequent visits to the service center to fix said defects. 4) Tesla really shined when the rebates were available, which no longer exist accept on a diminished, state-level scale. Again, I really like our Tesla, but this Rav-4 has me considering alternatives. Especially since a Model Y is so expensive now.

My prime does 58 miles on a fully charged battery. Admittedly, mostly backroads and very little altitude difference but still...this car surprises me every time. It is, for now at least, the best choice if you don't want to depend on charging points along the road in order to get to your destination. The prime get's me to work (About 37 miles) fully electrically where I can charge so I haven't visited a gas station since the day I picked it up from my local dealer (January 12th 2022). Very comfortable, quiet and always a lot of fun to outperform a Beamer or any other fast looking car in a family SUV after the light turns green! I actually shopped both of these but in the end the cost was a factor. The lowest cost Tesla model Y is now 63k with a 4.8 sec 0-60 while the lowest cost Toyota Rav4 Prime SE ends up being 35k after State and Federal rebates with a 0-60 at 5.7 sec. For my daily commute and trips around town I can easily stay under the 40-50 miles of EV range on the Rav4 prime and only end up filling the tank ever 3 months or so to accommodate some longer trips. While I may consider an all electric car in the future, the Rav4 Prime is a great crossover that lets people transition to the electric world because it has flexibility.

I think the Toyota RAV4 Prime is amazing. I'm trying to decide between this and the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. I know the Toyota is a better vehicle, but I'm looking for a full offroad vehicle with good mileage and decent range which the RAV4 doesn't quite do like a Jeep. I wish Toyota would come out with a Tacoma prime which would kill not only the Jeep Wrangler 4xe but also possibly a future Jeep Gladiator 4xe. A Tacoma Prime and Tundra Prime could also possibly take over the service fleet market as well.

You guys missed some key tech that really drives the average Tesla buyer: 1) built in dash cam. 2) sentry mode. 3) autonomous driving capability that beats anything else out there, hands down, and 4) you touched on the Tesla app but really that’s a game changer for how you interact with your vehicle and 5) the Tesla will get better and smarter while you own it, the Toyota won’t. 6) Tesla has a nationwide supercharger network. 7) all electric means basically no maintenance. 8) what happens to gas that sits in the RAV4’s tank for a year? I’d still take a RAV4, but those are important points.

We have a 2013 Chevy Volt and absolutely love it. Most reliable car we have ever had. Fit, finish, software all perfect at least for us. We are in our mid to late seventies. My wife isn't tec savey at all. I do pretty good for a guy my age. Anyway, we just like to drive when we drive. It's a car for heaven's sake. Point A to point B. Our eyes aren't what they used to be. A basic screen that we can see basic information right in front of us works. I go car camping in our 2006 Chevy HHR. I built a kitchen module that has a sink with running water, small microwave and counter for preparing meals. I Bring a home made power box with built in lithium battery , charger, and fifteen hundred watt inverter. The box sits in the foot well on the passenger side. The front seat folds down so I can fit a one half queen size mattress. The Toyota is tall in the back to accommodate my kitchen set up. The Toyota also has a built in fifteen hundred watt inverter as does our Volt, that comes in very handy in power outages. The total range on the Toyota is twice that of either the Volt or the HHR. The HHR is getting a little long in the tooth. It still looks like new and runs as good as it looks but I don't usually keep a car much past eighteen years. I've often said to my wife that I would like to replace the HHR eventually with a small suv plug-in hybrid. I am an old extremely fussy German Jew and can't stand poor quality. The neighbors have a Tesla model three. The whole thing is junk. Poor fits, poor paint etc. He's only had it a year and has had the Tesla repair truck come to his home three times that I know of. They must have a limit on how many times they do home repairs as now he has drive four hundred miles one way, if the car is still drivable, for service or repairs. I will drive four hundred miles to visit a friend or relatives, not to repair a stuck door latch. The Volt is eight years old, has no body rust, the fit finish and paint are still perfect, as is the mechanics. Again I am very fussy and have compared both the Tesla and Toyota, I'll take the Toyota.

I was in the market for a new vehicle. Was looking for a SUV Crossover and had my eyes on the RAV 4 Prime. When I found out the price and there was no budging on it plus I might have to pay a premium like in a bidding war on a house, I lost interest. I had a budget of 50K but the bidding war would bump it up way over that. I walked away from the dealership telling the guy I was no longer interested. I went and bought a base Model Y instead with the 19 inch wheels. Couldn't be happier with the tech that came with the car at that price. The driving dynamics is awesome in terms of handling and acceleration. The instant torque is insane! Even if you are cruising at 60 mph then floor it, your head will snap back into the headrest and before you know it you'll be at 90 or more. Had an electrician install a NEMA 14-50 240 volt outlet in the garage. Now I just plug the car charger in when I get home and set it to charge at off peak hours. Car will charge overnight and in the morning I am good to . Haven't had to visit a supercharger yet. All daily drives are covered by home charging. Got delivery on 9/25. Today is 10/26. It has 2100 miles on it already. If I am not driving it, our two sons take over hence the high mileage. But it is well worth it. We are getting our money's worth.

The Toyota has two major things going for it. First and foremost it's still eligible for the $7500 federal tax credit and up to $1500 state tax credits dropping the price by up to $9k. While we are in the topic, it's worth noting the RAV4 prime starting msrp is $38,100, which is already a good deal cheaper than the model y. Next, I think it's still more attractive for many buyers to have the option of using gasoline. Range anxiety is a very real thing, especially in colder climates. Having the peace of mind that you have a gas station on every corner, or that you can be bailed out by a buddy or AAA with a can of gas is invaluable. I know the supercharger network is immense and I fully believe in it but not all people buy into all electric immediately and this type of vehicle is a good bridge for that. The bad news is I think the US is only getting 5k of these and Toyota has allowed them all to states that offer that additional subsidy. Will be interesting to see if we see more as the years go on or what Toyota has planned.

@@wally6193 Only if you have an 80 mile commute would it make sense. Why bother? The average daily r/t commute in the US is 32 miles, so most people would drive this car fully electric most days. To get 80 miles, you'd need to double the capacity of the battery, double the cost of that battery and double the weight. You'd be better off buying a BEV at that point. The point of this PHEV solution is that you can remove gasoline from daily commuting, and in the rare occasion that you need more range, you have the gas engine to extend the range, and it's efficient when doing so. Batteries are currently a limited commodity. Rather than doubling the battery size in one car, you can build two cars and generate double the miles driven on electricity.

I see the RAV4 Prime and the Model Y as rich man playthings that cannot in any reasonable frame of mind be justified because of economy, gas or electric savings; for the purpose of replacing a perfectly functional car that even might be a gas guzzler. Think of how long the pay back would be, especially with a huge loan, and in the case of the Toyota, dealership rip-offs and surcharges not only in buying the vehicle but in maintaining it with outrageous costs for scheduled oil and filter changes, spark plugs and radiator flushes. This is from a cranky ex-Prius owner.

There is a cheaper version of the Rav4 Prime around $40k. You don't have to get the version that they are test driving. Also, I expect prices will come down for the Toyota once the Fed tax credit expires. Toyota isn't going to price it cheap and leave that much money on the table. Especially with low production. Tesla will come out with a slightly smaller and cheaper version. I expect a small crossover/hatchback. Battery costs still dropping rapidly so EVs will be more and more competitive.

You're concerned about the cost because the social cost of carbon emissions is something you don't pay... yet. The expected annual cost of climate change is 1.9 trillion dollars. @@jonathansage2147 I certainly agree with you concerning carbon emissions - ideally all new cars must head to being electric and or fossil fuel free - indeed we should have a tapering fuel consumption requirement that will eliminate fossil fuel dependence. What is the irritating part for me is the consumption aspect, is my thinking that I have to get a new something shiny that has guilt-free carbon impact to replace a perfectly functional automobile. Besides the emissions required to build any car, electric or not, and the environmental impact of disposing the old gas one, the problem is the constant need we all have (myself especially included) to self-indulge, to spend, when we should be looking at our retirement future My thought is, if it isn't broke, don't replace it quite yet; but if it is time to get a new car, then see it as an investment in the future of our planet.

Great comparison. Here in California, being eligible for rebates and carpool lane stickers is essential. RAV4 Prime and most of the Tesla Y model quality but there are limited rebates and caps on the numbers of stickers. I'd take the RAV4 TRD. Bummer it doesn't come in hybrid form. Like range plus mileage of hybrids vs limited range of electric only. Would only look at the Prime if there was enough of a tax rebate 42k (50k-7.5k rounded) is still too much when TRD starts at 37K. For others 50k isn't a barrier and RAV4 Prime is more nicely appointed and better built than many of the luxury hybrids from BMW or Mercedes and a step above the electrics which is mostly Tesla. It is 1 year old and has 32000 km with zero $ spent in maintenance and a fraction of the cost in electricity compared to gas. We went on a 12,000 km road trip from Canada to Phoenix AZ return. No such thing as range anxiety, I drove 130 to 140 kph and still easily made it to all charging stations. Speak to owners (actual owners) it’s difficult to find someone who has had a negative experience.

If the new Teslas were all autopilot full time, I could understand just having a touchscreen as the only interface, but besides that, I think it's dangerous to be having to focus on the screen to look for settings while driving. The RAV4 (I just bought a 2019 XLE) has a few touchscreen functions, but a majority can be done on the steering wheel and with physical knobs and buttons. The Teslas don't even provide a HUD to show your speed, you have to look over to the screen.

Hello. Tesla Model 3 driver here, you get used to leering over at the speedometer quickly, and you forgot to mention voice commands. Tesla is constantly updating our cars and adding new and useful voice commands. You really should test drive sometimes. It’s a great experience. Anyway, congrats on your new car!

The speedometer is completely visible from peripheral vision without looking away from the road, I was concerned about that but it's a non issue. As far as touchscreen goes, pretty much everything I would do while driving (AC/heat/navigation/etc) can be done from the voice commands, and volume has its own knob. I was pretty resistant to it at first, and if there was a climate knob option I definitely would have taken it, but in practice I haven't found myself ever needing to touch the screen while driving, and when I do it's always in auto pilot (or stopped).

Yeah but that Toyota makes you take your eyes off the road to look over to the upper middle of the windshield all the time to see what's behind you.😉
