Two Corrections. MDX gets an iBooster, (Electronic Brake Booster) not DBW like TLX and NSX. Also we said TypeS get two turbos, only gets a dual scroll single turbo.

Great review. My wife drives the previous generation and we love it. Something that is hard to explain and get emotional about is the reliability- push the button and it starts. The electronics no not have bugs, and the controls, switch levers and touch points hold up over years of family use. I think Honda/Acura will always be 1 step behind if the cutting edge in power output, newest tech, and automotive trends as a conscious trade out for nose to tail reliability.

I drive a 2011 MDX with SHAWD, no way would I trade my car over the newer generations. everything still works in my car, except the radio/CD player, the engine, transmission and the SHAWD work perfectly and never has the car had any issues in the first 105Kmiles of ownership. I dont think you can say the same about a MB, BMW or an Audi.

I think Acura was very smart going with the normally aspirated V6 instead of a turbo 4. Crossovers at this size with the turbo 4 (XC90, GLE350, and Q7 2.0t) tend to loose steam on the highway. Plus you are not going to get any savings at the pump compare to their 6 cylinder counterparts. In fact the GLE450 gets better gas mileage than the GLE350. This MDX represent Acura’s mantra since 1999, offering a lot of car for the money.

4 cylinder turbo is not cheaper to operate, still some what inefficient in respect to MPG, plus engines are somewhat noisy and when considering the turbo, those engines most likely will have to get more maintenance a lot sooner. I taka a V6 any day! not sure why manufacturers have added so many gears to an engine that can benefit from having no more than 6 gears. todays MDX has less power than the 2011 model and gas consumption is relatively about the same.

I have owned more Honda's than I care to admit. 91-Accord, 87 and 2001 Civic, 89 Legend LS 2007 CRV & 2016 CRV and 2011 Acura MDX. I went the Nissan route in 2002 with the Maxima SE and in 2008 I went Mazda CX7, which was the worst car I ever owned from a brand new perspective. Honda & Acura products have been reliable and well built for the most part. All the honda Products surpassed 100K miles. Mazda lasted 50K miles before the engine blew up and the turbo went out-total flop. I am considering my next Acura product-having doubts about 4 cylinder engines with turbo.

My 1999/2000 Acura RL just turned 300,000 KMS on the odometer last week. I can attest that Acura products, minus the corrosion of the body unfortunately, are rock solid and are made with good quality. Yes, they require regular maintenance like any other automobile, but you can rely on it if it is well maintained. Another great and honest review of the new Acrua MDX. The older previous year models are a great bargain if you can get one for about $45K CDN. This is a really nice Acura but I'm not fond of the gloss black surfaces in any automobile. Period. I hate to clean it and I hate even more getting it dirty.

I test drove an A-Spec today and the ride is really nice. No body lean and very stable yet very comfortable on the road through PA potholes and rough roads. That was impressive. I already know the engine and 10speed from my Odyssey, so nothing too exciting there, but that was the reason I would consider this car. It just works really well. The interior is not 58k worthy though. I was a little disappointed there. The second row is bad, I could barely fit a rear-facing car seat behind myself as driver. I’m 6’3” and have shorter legs, long torso. Backseat had to be pushed all the way to the back. However, it fit, so can’t complain I guess, but this a huge car that should offer more room. And the headroom in the 2nd row is bad. i wasn’t able to sit without tilting my head quite a bit. What’s up with that? I have no problems in my Outback or in my Odyssey. In general I didn’t feel a 58k vibe at all. Plastic lower speaker covers in the doors front and back are ridiculous at this price point, and so is the hard plastic in the door cupholders. Could have put some rubber in there so bottles don’t rattle. So driving experience is great, rest just mediocre. Sorry Acura, had high hopes for this one, but it doesn’t fit my perception of luxury.

Love your reviews especially when you put it on the rack and talk about engineering and build quality. Bought a 2024 MDX Advance two weeks ago and love the comfort in the seats and the ride. I’ve watched this twice to understand the engineering that went into the suspension. Had a 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5t Sport Advanced for 18 months traded it with 31k flawless miles. Got a 2023 Genesis G80 2.5t Sport Prestige and traded it after 8 months and 22k flawless miles for this MDX. So comfort matters with long days in the saddle but needed the size of an SUV otherwise my G80 is my favorite. My first Acura product had a BMW 2021 4 Series that was an electrical nightmare and traded for the GV70 after 7 months. I’m a huge fan of what Genesis is putting out there and really figured I’d be in a GV80 2.5t Prestige. Acura was right next to Genesis and the rep sold both but for shits and giggles I started with a test in the MDX. Then went over to Genesis and tested a gorgeous GV80, and I was wondering to myself why the seat is such a POS. When I got back I had to double check to see if the butt bladder was jacked up it was so awful. The tech is way better thought out in the Genesis products but every vehicle has misses and will live through the tech downgrade for these awesome seats and ride. This MDX totally caught me off guard and I’m loving what I read about the quality and reliability. Great job guys with your reviews I really enjoy them, you work well together.

14:15 You'd think with 10 gears they could make 2&3 closer together to prevent such a huge RPM drop, challenging the 3.5 to pull all the way up from way down low once it's in 3rd. The lower bottom end torque of the V6 vs. the turbo 4 makes it worse.

I think the torque converter stall speed might also have been reduced to improve fuel economy. The stall speed determines the RPM the engine will drop to after a shift with a significant ratio change. Put another way, the stall speed determines the minimum RPM at WOT. A "looser" converter will help acceleration and launch feel, but it increases slippage (extreme example is the old 5R55S in the V6 Ford Ranger, where it always feels like it's slipping). A "tighter" converter feels more coupled and less slippy, but since it couples at a lower RPM it loads the engine down there, too - and if the engine has no low-end torque, it will take forever to pull into the torque curve after a shift.

Good, reliable engineering; the exterior design has been hit-and-miss; and I agree that the current version is a little bit sleepy when it comes to driving excitement. Just bought one today. It came down to the GV80 and this. The GV80 is more upscale feeling and felt more special. It also felt like it was going to be not just more expensive up front, but long term. I test drove the MDX about two weeks ago and hated the light steering and the gutless lack of torque. Here's the thing...I'm not going to wring the shit out of a car that I may not buy so I didn't rev it out, but it was also in comfort mode which overboosts the steering to the point that you can't even feel it and eliminated any kind of throttle response. You put the thing in normal and it feels fine, you put in sport mode and it feels alright. The stereo was another near miss....the one that I test drove had some knucklehead crank the bass all the way up to the point that it sounded like shit.....at non-dumbass settings it's really nice. It's very clean. The real sticking point was the stupid touchpad thing. I like to touch what I see on the screen, but I went back to the dealer and basically said "let me just sit in the damn thing and see if I can get over it". About 5 minutes of messing around with it I felt good enough to put it back on the list and obviously good enough to buy it. The selling points are that I think that it strikes a good balance between being attractive without being garish or f'ing stupid looking (Hilander). The steering is so responsive and for an SUV it has very little body roll (at least that I could feel). You point it and you are going there. It also has a very good turning radius for U-turns and stuff. The ride is good; it's not as well damped as a Lincoln, but I don't feel like i'm floating 2 feet above the road either. The HUD is nice and bright and I can see it with sunglasses on. It drives smaller than it is. The V6 is smooth and even if I don't have that ridiculous low end torque it's still a mid 6 second 0-60 SUV and it's going to be damn near bulletproof. An oil change is going to be priced at near human prices (i'm over spending $400-700 every time I go to get an A or B service on the European crap). 3rd row is a joke just like damn near everything out there save for perhaps the Telluride or Pallasade....which by the way with the current f'ing mess in the industry are marked up about $10K over MSRP locally.....my local Acura dealer didn't screw around even though the Advanced package is flying off the showroom floors. We literally got a 2022 MDX for less than a fully loaded Kia would have cost....nothing wrong with Kia...I own a Stinger GT2 and LOVE it, but you put this side by side with the Kia and for the same price out the door it's a no-brainer.

I like the Genesis but as 2nd gen owner, I questioned their reliability. My 2011 MDX with SH-AWD has been a blast to drive. 105k miles later, i still love it. As a family hauler, vacation car I can say Acura delivered on everything they say about the handling of such a heavy SUV. My car has been driven at 105 MPH and the feel is Amazing, its no soorts car but it handles very well and it sounds good with the 3.7 v6. I am ready for a test drive for a 2024 model, as i would not consider the German SUV counterparts on price and reliability alone.

I have both 2007 gen 2 with the older 300hp 3.7L and a newer gen 3 hybrid. SH-AWD is no joke-excellent. No, it’s not an X5, but my Acuras have also been dead reliable (unlike my friend’s brand new X5 that blew its rear differential) and $20,000 less money for 99% of the same good driving experience. Highly recommended.

You guys offer a top shelf car review. Love the complete systems description that I don't see elswhere. I have a 2019 MDX Advance and I'm at the halfway point of my 36 month lease (actuall 20 months in), and have stumbled on this new 2022 version. Really liking the improvements overall. Wish the i infotainment screen which is welcomed large one, was touch screen as well. At 69 yo, and test drove the 2019 RDX, which has the new Acura Touchpad , that touchpad was a turnoff to me. And it should be pointed out that the 2019 MDX was a better value . Agreed to the statements, that MDX is a little boring with aged dual screens, and in the way it drives. My Advance package included 45 ratio tires. This 2022 has 50 ratio tires. It does make a difference that I could feel in Sport suspension and drive modes. The loaner that I drove a few months ago, with 50 ratio tires on 20 inch wheels DID make a difference that i could feel. If i dont upgrade to the 2022 model ( I would consider that with a upgrade lease program ?), i will change the tires on my 2019 which has 20 inch wheels to 50 ratio tires. Thats my Two cents . Great work guys.

Nice review!! I’m looking forward to what the new Pilot will be sharing the revised light truck platform. I think Honda does a better job overall with that platform than competitors. As a ex Highlander owner and current Pilot owner, I can say the Pilot is better in every way. The MDX is hot though... And I might go for one if Honda misses the mark on the new Pilot. I hope they don’t try too hard to make it look like a truck.

I'm not old and one of the things that sold me on the current gen Mazda I bought is that it wasn't busy. Of every car I cross-shopped (all of them), it felt the most like a 'traditional' car with the tech in the background. Acura was one of the worst in that regard. Different strokes of course but I really dislike the current Acura design language on the interior.

I over the past six months have driven every luxury SUV and nothing comes close to the MDX, 2022 for space, responsiveness, price to value, and for sure terrific looks inside and out. I just bought my Red Pearl MDX and will pick it up Monday. I was most disappointed in almost every Mercedes, Audi and even the Volvo line, as they are just too much in love with their high price to value relationship with current cars. Lexus, has been so conservative that they hold back too and just now this fall may have their NX 450h and three other options, but for them and the others I mentioned you will not even find much on the lots now, because of the micro-chip shortage, battery shortages, plants shut down, etc., etc. Product is coming in nationwide very slowly. However, Acura's MDX made in their Ohio plant, (as the Alabama plant in Lincoln) is busy making others) both still seem to be pushing out product, with the exception of the new coming change in the Honda Pilot I drove two days ago and the new change seems to be coming for design change maybe by end of year, if parts alliance holds up. So many ifs! I was most impressed with my new 2022, MDX and just hope I feel that way in a few years. I plan on buying my wife a new car soon, and I will be trading each year until I die now, every three years or 36.000 miles, as so many changes are taking place over the next 15 years with EV's, PHEV's and God knows what else will be born! Not interested in having driver anxiety over the next few years with a EV traveling across the third largest country on planet Earth looking for a charging station and needing to stay in a hotel every 300 or 400 miles with the issues of getting more juice. If they, our government gets smart, they will force Tesla and others setting up charging stations that cost from $230,00 to $500,000 per charging station to have a unified charging head, (like in all the EU countries) where you can travel most places now without real worry of sitting on the side of the road with NO EV power left. Not ready for prime time yet. I plan on enjoying my MDX and thank God my wife of 53 years gave the Pearl Red a heads up!

One thing that I keep wishing that all manufacturers of large SUV's would do is to offer a third row delete option with available captains chairs in the second row. It would be nice to be able to have the extra room of a large SUV but without the peanut gallery seats (especially if you would never use them anyway). An added benefit: Since the load floor would be at the level of where the third row seats would normally be when folded, there would be a lot of extra room for storage under that floor.
