I had a 2024 MDX SH-AWD (non S Type ) as a loaner from the dealership recently. My thoughts: excellent handling for a full size three row, very comfortable seats, and quiet inside. Good all around visibility. The push button shift setup takes some getting used to. The touch pad is finicky and frustrating. The black piano finish interior trim is a finger print magnet. The engine performance was good, but gas mileage was not…19.5 mpg highway. The adaptive cruise control system was easy to use and worked well. I returned the loaner to the dealership, picked up our 2018 Acura RDX, and sold it. Bought a 2024 Toyota Venza Hybrid Limited. 40 mpg vs. 19.5 mpg.

Hit the nail on the head. My sister has this in that stunning blue, and for her and her kids flinging around crap its the perfect vehicle. I steal it whenever she comes over and I can tell you I haven’t had that transmission issue that you all have had. Other than that, yea, infotainment is a bit annoying but manageable, the car is ultra refined, and the drive train, while more than quick enough isn’t the most fun thing (other than having fun with the SH-AWD, which is outstanding). Truly a great car and getting a massage while blasting my favorite tunes is an absolute joy.

Everybody talks about how fantastic the BMW engines perform along with their efficiency etc. However, whilst it's a very commendable achievement by BMW engineers, we mustn't lose sight of their less than average long-term reliability, robustness & customer service. High ownership costs are another major issue. Acura may not have cutting edge drivetrains, but they'll probably way outlast most BMW stuff! 😉

Cons: fuel economy in city, highway its around 25 which is not bad, Hard seat cushion, infotainment to some extent- but can add shortcuts or speech recognition to make it easy. i chose this over a van and am happy with it in every drive .

I agree with everything said in the review EXCEPT I love the infotainment pad its great no finger prints on screenn its further back good visibility. The onething I think they failed is the exhaust is too quiet, trans tuning and mpg should be better.
@LJ-wo1wf
@LJ-wo1wf Жыл бұрын
I've lived with an aftermarket exhaust in a Civic, and I've grown to appreciate quieter factory exhausts with fake engine noises added for Sport modes. I don't want to annoy my neighbors (and wife) with loud exhausts anymore, and I get to hear the revs when needed. I still have the option to buy a louder catback, of course; but if the stock exhaust was already loud, it's nigh impossible to find a quieter aftermarket replacement that isn't worse-performing than stock.

Totally LOVE my MDX. Have it for 6 months now and no complaints. I knew the gas mileage was crap going in, so that's not a complaint for me. I am also all about physical buttons. I have another vehicle with touch screens and it's more distracting for me to adjust temperature, channels etc. Also, the elephant in the room for most people is the touchpad. Let me put it this way, if Acura had made it ALSO a touchscreen, I would STILL be using the touchpad 80% of the time. Seriously, it is that good, that ergonimically perfect, and as I always say, I feel like James T. Kirk on the bridge of the Enterprise slouching in my chair and working that control. It feels so natural. From a business standpoint, Acura would be smart to also make it a touchscreen for those who can't make the mental transition that touchscreen ability does3always equate to most practical. One thing I did which I have not seen on any other MDX in my area is add the body side moldings and the tailgate Molding. The MDX is already a good looking vehicle, a clean line masculine sportiness coupled with a premium look. The body side molding, for me at least, just gives it that nudge towards a more luxury appearance without the gaudy appearance that some SUVs have in an attempt to make them look luxurious. The MDX is just quite classic chiseled sophistication.

Like the physical buttons compared to the lack of them in the ‘24 X5. Amount of piano black no different. I have no problem with the infotainment in here coming from the old idrive. I like the cup holder placement better in the MDX. I had no charging pad. Compared to the one buried in the front of the X5 cup holders, I like the placement of the charging pad better in the MDX. Great vehicle!

As an owner of a 22 type s advance, I have to 100% agree with this assessment. It definitely has some flaws, but at the price point ( having owned more expensive performance and luxury SUVs currently and in the past) it pretty much nails the comfort and sensation requirements. I've had the hard left turn acceleration cutoff occur, and it was scary the first time pulling onto a crowded road. I 100-percent appreciate the fair and balanced reporting on the vehicle. Especially coming from somebody who owns arguably a nicer, higher-performing car on paper state they'd buy this as a replacement. It's the goldilocks car for us.

Here was my solution to the power issue. I tuned my mdx type s using ktuner for stage 1. The engine is clearly robust ASF. The car has transformed tremendously. I also own a TLX type S (yes I love these cars) and used the same tune and only the m340i x-drive is quicker. For the sedans issue with suspension roll I remedied it using swift springs and the car defies physics, no exaggeration. Next I upgraded the Android auto to wireless using a 80 dollar Motorola dongle and it works flawlessly. Simple upgrades costing $1200 bucks brings both these cars as close to a complete package regarding driving dynamics.

The biggest issue with Acura and the "Type-s" trims, Acura themselves hype these thing to be something they clearly aren't. The precision crafted performance.. less talk, more drive.. Beat that.. Consumers are paying that additional cost for a performance trim that is clearly not a performance trim and terrible fuel economy. Not directly Acura's fault, but their dealerships are also marking these up, pricing them well over the competition. Prime example, the Integra type-s the average ADM is 25K. Seen one as high as 82K and a TLX-S PMC edition brushing nearly 100K. Acura is a small brand, selling only 4 models. They are no longer a value brand, certainly not with those ADM's prices.

I think this is the perfect use case long term review. My mom traveled 100 miles each way 1-2 times a week to the site as a lead design planner, always lugging around furniture samples. She put over 300,000 miles on her 2008 MDX before promptly retiring and buying a Macan GTS, though now she complains that the engine is slow to respond and the dual clutch has bad programming. No matter what a manufacturer does, a V6 SUV is always going to be mostly uninspiring, so you might as well get buy it from Honda Engineering. This $70,000 MDX is the best luxury SUV until you step up to a Cayenne S or BMW X5 M60, both around $95,000.

Driving it normally in a hilly residential area at 25-30mph is horrible to respond. It's always trying to keep the engine in at least 5th gear whereas if you were controlling it manually you would want 3rd to 4th and because its a dual clutch it can't transition well like a torque converter. @@avery4528Macan PDK is the best transmission in the segment. Its gear selection is spot on (e.g., auto downshifts on hills), it can drop several gears at once, and Sports Plus holds gears obnoxiously. Maybe try a software reset. It learns and adapts to your driving style, and maybe something got messed up there. You can find online how to do that at home. Lastly, maybe she's used excessive throttle tip-in? Honda/Acura products have that bad sometimes. She might not be used a linear throttle? Oh and hopefully she's running premium gas.

Wish I had known about these tuxmat 2 months ago. They seems to be really covering the entire footwell area. Most weather mats partially cover the footwell area which dirt, rocks etc…eventually gets through. I’m tempted to sell my current mats and get these. 👌

I have a 2022 MDX Type S, now with 17,000 miles so it is used a lot. Strengths are the cabin, audio system, fit and feel. The red interior over white exterior gets a lot of positive comments, looks super cool. The big negatives for me are the drivetrain. Lazy motor, doesn't feel much quicker than the N/A V6 (and it's isn't objectively). It does have a lot more torque so for moving around town it feels less stressed but overall, I don't think its a powerful motor by any means. The biggest let down is the transmission, it has a horrible tune - it will shift mid corner and when you accelerate it will downshift sometimes abruptly so it feels like the software needs a ton of work and really makes a premium product feel very mediocre to drive. Lastly, the depreciation has been rough, with the base Type S at 68,000 before taxes etc, the car after a year of ownership is worth 49,000 which to me seems out of place. Also, the gas mileage with daily use I fill it once a week which is similar to a V8, so from an efficiency standpoint its terrible so overall cost of ownership is an additional 240-300$ a month in gas which adds up.

Totally agreed with you! At least they just should add touch ability to the screen as an driver option. Maybe not move it closer in this generation if costs much. In perfect way I agree: remove touch pad, put in that place or on the left side of the tunnel: in parallel to the driver’s right leg the charger for the phone. But not horizontal, but as a slit with slider lock to fix the different sized phones. Move cup holders forward, improve space under armrest. And finally remove shiny black plastic or add as an option for type s some aluminium texture ( like bmw x5) or kind of darkened aluminium. “Gear box might put itself into neutral” wtf?! It must be fixed, otherwise it has no right for type s badge. I pay extra money to have an ability to shoot when needed in winter or summer, it’s my business( that issue might cost too much, when gear box thinks instead of you in the winter)! I pay money for that. That is a bug that must be fixed! As for engine + suspension, also totally agree, type s must be more powerful and efficient !

Great review and car! But I wish Acura produce the same or improved Sport Hybrid trim for MDX Type S that RLX had, so it becomes more efficient and maybe even faster. In this case I 100% buy one.

Love the video! I get the point here but if the argument for the MDX is a value play against a 100K BMW and Mercs, I just don’t think anyone truly in the market for a new X7 or GLS is cross shopping the MDX. Acura may want you to think that to justify the 70K price tag but I personally don’t see it with that customer segment. Realistically, the competitors to the MDX is the new inline 6 Mazda CX-90, the handsome Genesis GV80, the all new Lexus RX, the max trim Grand highlander or the new base model Sequoia (starts at 60), the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, the Lincoln Aviator, and Honda’s own brand new Pilot etc. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on these comparisons to help someone with their purchase decision. Cheers.

Hi, you’re kinda wrong… lot of people think long term costs and full experience. I’m exactly that person looking for a 3 row SUV and my range is wide. Id love an x7 but long term reliability cost is the issue n not even really, just having to deal with it is the nuisance. Id want the x7 but i want a 3 row to last me more than even 5 years. I’ve had great luck with my 5 series going on 5 years but that’s just chance. Those mpg issues do concern me on mdx as we drive mostly small distances in town so we might actually bring mpg down to 16mpg versus the BMWs. You’d be surprised what people cross shop even when money isn’t the issue

Picking mine up on saturday! totally agree with the drive train comments. Fuel economy is not ideal and the fuel tank is a bit small - would like to see 75 -80litre tank. The engine could be a twin turbo 3.6L or something similar making 420hp. It's not enough of an upgrade power wise over the base model. Some 0-60 tests show that it's barely faster than the base mdx engine. I think they could've charged $1500 more and put a better engine in it.

Had this car for about a week while my older MDX was in service. I agree with pretty much everything you guys have said especially the power train. I believe they could have bumped it up to 375 hp +380 tq and could make it more efficient as well. I think they also need to put air vents in the 3rd row. Truly don't understand why they haven't done that yet. I also had the pleasure of driving the X5 and I must admit the B58 seems to be more refined even though the ride quality between the two is pretty much the same. For value this car is better than the X7 without a doubt.

Fully agree on the air vents in the third row. We had a 2017 MDX and now have 22' A-Spec, they still only have the vents in the floor under the second row which gives basically no air at all to the third row.
