g70's are 55k fully loaded, the german cars basically start at 55k, so really they're not in the same class imo. Especially considering a base 3.3l g70 is only 42k, which is waaaay less money than the germans for that level of speed
@zbipolarbear
@zbipolarbear 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. It feels like they missed the mark when it came to price comparisons. at 55k you're looking at the base level for all the german competition with their respective turbo V6/I6. And to even get them fully equipped similar what the g70 will offer fully loaded, you're gonna see a 10k - 15k markup to match it. A better pricing comparison would be that for a fully loaded V6 g70 you can get the base 4cyl. german competition fully specced. So the g70 is still giving you greater value. I have an Audi S5 Sportback with the prestige package and optional s sport package that comes in at nearly 70k. for people not interested in paying the german prices (and there are a lot of people) this is a great alternative for a car that has 8/10ths of the performance of the german competition

I own a 2021 G70 AWD Sport. Love the car, and your reviews have been really spot on. When you ask who's buying it I will offer up a point you missed. It has a very unique look, and if you have no allegiance to the German brands, it just doesn't look like every other BMW or Audi on the road. To the buyer who isn't a true 'car guy' , it's just very different from what else is out there. Part of it (admittedly) is you don't see many of them on the road, and every Audi/BMW looks fairly similar if you aren't hardcore for the brand.

Spot on. It looks better inside and outside. More importantly, it has an "unique" look. Furthermore, it provides many bells an whistles to the base unlike the German cars and still costs 15% less. Yes, the engine is not as refined as the German ones, but the difference is not 15%, but more like 5-10%. I went from Audi A4 to Genesis GV70 2.5T AWD as the family car. I am less than satisfied with the mileage. I also find the breaking experience bit unsatisfactory. But I wouldn't have known unless I owned a German car before. In every other aspect I absolutely enjoy the Genesis more than the Audi.

As someone who’s only had VW, Audi, BMW, and Merc’s for the last 15yrs, I can’t imagine buying any of the German offerings available right now. I feel like the entire German automobile industry has lost its way. The big four all seem to be void of any original ideas or designs, while jumping to copy each other’s gimmicks that their own customers hate. It almost reminds me of the American auto industry in the 70’s-80’s as they where losing their reign as industry leaders. If they’re banking on people continuing to buy their car under the assumption of “superior German engineering” these execs are going to wake up one day realizing they’ve let an entire industry down with their complacency.

Drive the Germans on the Autobahn back to back to a Genesis, and you'll see why they cost more. The Genesis still feels like a Hyundai with a nicer interior at the end of the day. Everyone else, I repeat, everyone else, including Lexus, Infinity, Acura, Cadillac, Genesis, Volvo, etc. and others who'd like to compete with BMW, Audi and Mercedes, are at least a generation or more behind them in terms of refinement, feeling of solidity, feeling of being planted and stable at high speeds, quietness, etc. Now, you may say "but I never drive faster than 80 mph and I don't care". Well, maybe you don't, but it still doesn't mean that some cars aren't built to be capable of doing that, and others aren't, and it doesn't mean that those cars that ARE built for it cost more because they're simply objectively better. Genesis is one of those others that aren't built for it. Not that they're bad, but they're in line with their price tag. Even a EU VW Passat / Arteon is more refined. Again, it's easy to judge "luxury" cars when they're stationary or driven at low speeds, because it's not hard to make a car quiet, smooth and comfortable at low to medium speeds. But go take one for a spin at 150+ mph on some curvy and bumpy autobahn and then you'll see the difference in stability, solidity, soundproofing, feeling of security, etc. The difference is Audi / BMW / Mercedes feel natural and totally unstressed at those kinds of conditions, there's no more drama driving them 150 than there is driving them at 80. With lesser cars, there is more drama and a sense of "going too fast". All this comes from superior engineering and manufacturing that's designed to perform on a much higher level than average cars, because these cars are BUILT to be driven like that on a daily basis by ANYONE on PUBLIC roads, not just professional drivers on closed circuits. This is what I say to everyone who compares these wanna-be premium brands to real premium brands. There's more to a premium experience than nice materials in the interior, and you have to drive the cars to their full potential to realize it. If you only ever drive cars to 7/10, you'll never notice the difference between a car that can only reach that 7/10ths comfortably, and a car that has those extra 3/10th still available to it.

@@layne4376 Maybe. I'm not sold on fit and finish though. My inlaws have a 2017 M4 that I get to drive on occasion. Its only a couple years old with maybe 30k miles on it and its got plenty of squeaks and rattles (especially from the drivers seat) and has already had to go to the dealer for low coolant. The interior has cool lighting and stuff but it doesn't seem much fancier than a new Honda or anything. If performance is all that matters, then yeah, an 8k premium could be worth it to you. But I think the Genesis looks better on the inside and outside. That 10year 100k warranty is also going to make cost of ownership considerably cheaper than the BMW if you plan on keeping it for more than a couple years. The Genesis is for someone who wants an attractive, sporty, well-equipped car with a long warranty that will make it way cheaper in the long run than most other luxury cars.

@@sappyjohnson "German cars will bankrupt you." - That's utter nonsense. Stop spreading rumors based on absolutely nothing but your own lack of knowledge. Service them regularly as the manufacturer recommends and they'll be bulletproof. Just like they are in Europe. All these myths about German cars being unreliable come from irresponsible owners in the USA who never service their cars and then whine when something breaks down, and then to make things worse, take them to a local mechanic who has no clue how to work on the car, puts in cheap replacement parts to save money, or messes something up even further, which puts these owners into an endless cycle of repairing something that never should have been broken to begin with. In Europe a BMW, Audi or Mercedes with less than 200k km's is considered "barely broken in" and expected to still perform like new for at least twice if not three times that mileage over the years. But in USA you hear stories from people with almost brand new cars. I wonder why.... it's all down to owners not listening to manufacturers, ignoring dealers because there's this belief in USA that dealers only exist to scam you (maybe that's true in USA), and the tendency to repair cars with cheap replacement parts once something does go wrong. As for German cars being expensive to maintain...tell me more about how expensive my BMW 3 series that I have a 5 year unlimited km warranty on is, with FREE SERVICING for the duration of the warranty at the official BMW dealer, all I have to pay during service intervals is the work, which is like 50 dollars per service every 30k km's or 2 years, all the parts I get are original and fully covered, at NO extra charge when I bought the car. That's just how confident the manufacturer is that the car will perform perfectly for 5 years with no mileage limit. You can put a ton on the car in that time, I have 140k already in just over 2 years.

Like others have mentioned, at the price you are talking a fully loaded Genesis vs a base German competitor. Outside of the diehard "i treat this brand as a god" folks, I think you could easily see Genesis swaying people over to them based off of the cost plus the fact that it looks really really good, and arguably better than some of it's competitors. I also feel like if you asked most non-car enthusiats about the Genesis brand, they would have no idea it was tied to Hyundai and would think it's a higher end European car company. I think the current Genesis lineup looks more European than any of it's Asian counterparts.

@@markmd695 As far as I know they have a little internal war with current Hundai dealerships. Genesis has a clear strategy of what it takes to be premium yet Hyundai delaerships feel entiteled to become also Gensesis dealers with what they already have and do. A lot of them are not willing to invest or understand that there has to be a very clear division between both brands on all levels - from entering the Genesis premises to having a seller and service that understands the level of cutomers used to BMW,AUDI,MERCERDES or LEXUS. In Europe they have different approach. They've claimed that before, too. What has improved is initial quality of German cars. They have fewer defects when new, and Consumer Reports has most of them as reliable for the first few years. However, look at German cars starting at around five years old and the reliability plummets. BMW (and others) will claim they've made improvements and the newer models won't do that, but that pattern goes back many years, and until the current cars get some mileage on them there's no way of knowing how they'll hold up. I'm not optimistic, given how much history of poor reliability they have. The simplest, cheapest models with the least tech are usually the most reliable. The performance models are noticeably worse.

I did a quick build of a M340i and a G70. In Canada the M340i built out at $73,000 CDN. The G70 built out at just over $62,000 CDN. So in Canada we only get the AWD G70. I think I would lease the G70. And in Canada we at 13 % HST to everything

Had a 2019 top spec Sport AWD. Really quite nice. Dealership experience between all 5 of them near me was generally poor. Ended up lemoning it due to them refusing to address known issues. Once the brand separates itself and the dealership experience improves from Hyundai, I wouldn't mind being a customer again. It does have tuning potential, some of the stingers are just now cracking into the 10s, but the upgrade path gets exorbitantly expensive as there aren't many options, especially when looking into upgrading the turbos. Love to return at some point, though.

Hey Mark, love the content. One thing… have you ever considered taking a moment to discuss paint quality? I appreciate the brief audio reviews, weight measurement, underbody check. A quick discussion regarding paint would be very nice. Reason I bring it up on this video, is I was at the Hyundai dealer to check a veloster N (just for fun) and the paint quality was absolutely horrible, massive patches of orange peel, and they wanted $40k CAD for it!

I went with a 2021 IS350 F-Sport. I drove the IS300 and REALLY liked it. I’m coming up on 2,000 miles on my IS350. I have to say, it’s hands down the best built feeling car I’ve probably ever been in. Lexus clearly doesn’t fuck around with their quality. The car is built like an absolute tank and literally feels like it rides on rails. I’ve taken some decently sharp turns on the freeway in cruise at 75 and it’s effortless. The 3.5L may be a little underpowered but I know I’ll never have to worry about if I buy the car out. And that F-Sport exhaust gets me every time I start the car up. Beautiful engine note! I actually haven’t even driven it in manual sport mode with the paddle shifters yet… I’m sure it can MOVE!

No, not enough said. I know this is a year-old comment, but I see this misconception all the time. Warranty does not equal reliability. It's just an insurance policy on repairs whose cost is baked into the MSRP. Hyundai is notorious for not honoring the warranty, and even aside from that, the cars are not scoring Japanese-good in reliability surveys. Korean auto workers are actually pretty well paid, and I've talked with mechanics who say Hyundai/Kia's price advantage comes from cheaping out where it doesn't show, much like a Samsung or LG appliance.

Im a Canadian owner of '22 G70 and if you spec a C43/M340i to match the G70 Sport AWD, you are looking at $15k more (in Canada)! Now I am not as rich as you KZbinrs, so I cant just put down 15k more but I would definitely not consider a base C43 or M340i over this car (sorry but the "engine-in-front-of-the-front-axel-king-of-understeer" S4 isn't even on the shopping list). Something else that I find strange, and this might perhaps be the tires on your car, the Sport comes with Pilot Sport 4's and in sport+ the AWD system will send all the power to the back, to allow for some amazing oversteer! I haven't once encountered understeer in mine or even get a sense that its a front biased system (which it isn't). Other than that, I agree with most of your comments. This is my first non-German sport sedan in 15+ years. Great review as always!

The comparison is pretty incorrect here: Genesis G70 ranges $47ish to $55k maxed out with all the extras. M340i is $55k to start, $69k with the same options as a maxed G70 Audi S4 Prestige is over $60k and still has options to add. The Acura and Lexus are the only offerings that have most options all packed into one, but these options are $5-10k more in base MSRP. Used market, the G70 presents an even better value proposition. Newer luxury brand, higher initial depreciation. 2022 Certified G70 models are in the high $30k and low $40k range, which makes these an amazing value!

Great review. Local dealership (Cincinnati) only stocks AWD. Have rwd 2012 Genesis (Hyundai), still going strong with 95k miles. Only weakness in2012 was gearbox IMO. Have summer performance tires on it now and it really rocks. Had opportunity to get “R Spec” with 420 hp v8 when I bought my 2012, but after driving it realized I would probably loose my license. Caring neither about "brand flex" or the perceived stigma of the Genesis marquee, Hyundai/ Kia or whoever owns Genesis prioritizes tech above raw driving experience. This much power on the floor with mediocre brakes and no true manual option is a disqualifier for me, personally. The presence of the screen atop the dash rather than in the center stack is a point against it, and I generally dislike the way these look.

I think the G70 is a phenomenal car. I wish the Michelin PS4S tires, the Low Steel (semi-metallic) Brembo brake pads and the 3D gauge cluster options that are on the Korean model were available in North America. In 2019, the G70 had a "Dynamic Edition" that included the upgraded Brembo brake pads and Michelin PS4S tires. The aforementioned options should be standard on the 2022 Sport Prestige trim to really give it a unique advantage in the segment.

Thank you feral bird and chuckle monkey, very nice video. As others have said, though, the price/optioning comparisons were fairly off throughout, and with the exception of the IS500, I think it's difficult to make a definitive depreciation argument against the other vehicles. The G70 will definitely depreciate faster, but I suspect these particular model years will do that less so than prior products. The rest felt very spot on, and as someone looking at the top trim AWD model, you guys raise an interesting argument against it given what you ultimately are able to utilize on the road. Something I'll have to think about. Cheers!

I know this vid is 1y old, but, g70 3.3T does NOT come in price wise near the m340i. Spec an m340i like the 55k-56k g70, that same m340i will run you upwards of 65k (for AWD). And the g70 looks better, materials better (current 3 series is hard and plasticy AF), with longer warranty. I’ve had 3 versions of the 3 series, and I’m done with them. I love that the g70 exists bc it gives me a true, viable option in this class for less money.
