Brisbane River - the whole journey

Brisbane River - the whole journey

Күн бұрын

Leg 14. The journey from source to sea continues, with an overnight paddle from Savages Crossing to Kholo Bridge. Garry Fitz's shares his many insights on the river environment, and we also talk to the owners of Weefarm Brisbane River Camping, and landowner Clint who is working to save his property from erosion. The route takes us through Sapling Pocket and World's End Pocket - the very best of Brisbane River, at the best time of the year.

G'day Magnus, it's great to see you blokes back on the water. A magic paddle. Sure, there's some flood damage, but you're doing a great service to familiarise people with the situation and the good work that many riparian landowners are doing. Cheers, Tony

Cheers Tony - I think the penny has dropped for most (not all) landowners that vegetation is key to protecting their banks. It's a slow turnaround though, the best time to plant a tree was 100 years ago etc.

I literally just kayaked the length of the brisbane river from the dam to the sea mouth, was a 6 day adventure like no other

Excellent - it's a fair stretch to kayak. Did you do it yourself? We started at the source in the Bunyas, so we had done 200km+ by the time we reached Wivenhoe.

@@brisbaneriver-thewholejour2600 yeah mate I did it myself I cant remember what the place is called but I started right under the dam wall it's a kayak launch there. Yer my trip was about 200kms too. So did you do a whole trip? Also where is the bunya source? So did you travel from the other side of the dam down to wivenhoe?

Bunya mountains - the first 100 km or so was walking, and on private properties so it took a lot of coordination with land owners etc. We got on the water about 50 Km above Wivenhow. It's all on this channel, the whole journey so far.

Great video and welcome back, as beautiful as that part of the country is, from someone that spends a lot of time exploring it there is a lot of damage from the floods and it's pretty sad really, the last two floods really did some damage that may take years to recover, we just hope we don't get anymore in the near future.

Thanks - and yes it will take some time. There seems to be increasing focus on riparian vegetation management based on the chats we've had with people along the way, so at least that's a positive trend.

So nice to see these places again, I went through in March last year. The mid-river is beautiful. Make sure you kayak on the high tide from colleges crossing up to the old weir. That is pretty interesting and some nice rock formationes.

We agree - it's beautiful, though still recovering from the floods. The journey from Colleges and downstream will be 6-hr journeys on the outgoing tide - ideally at peak tides. It's going to be very different from the journey to date.

We stayed on private land with full permissions. Almost all of the land along the river is private and out of bounds. Weefarm Camping is a great option for overnight trips.

I think it's fair to say that it's the best stretch - highly recommended.
