1. Sirens 2. Power of the Night/Dungeons are calling 3. Hall Of The Mountain King 4. Gutter Ballet 5. The Wake Of Magellan 6. Edge Of Thorns 7. Streets: A Rock Opera 8. Fight For The Rock The later albums I’ve ran through only once so I need to revisit them. As such, I don’t feel fair in ranking them. The above albums I’ve listened to several times however and have always gone back to. Even though I recognize The Wake Of Magellan is walking away for the most part of that heavy sound, there’s a lot of solid moments in several of the songs and I have a personal bias toward any music that includes themes of the ocean and sailing, so I really enjoyed that. It definitely has a more sentimental vibe mixed in there which I really enjoy. I also love concept albums and those that tell a story in general. Savatage is one of my many bands I always go back to and it’s something like a muse to get through the challenges of life. If a band can do that, it’s a really great gem. I ranked Fight For The Rock as last since I logically see it as lesser in comparison as it’s definitely got that commercial sound. However, there’s at least 2 tracks on that album that comes off strong and redeeming in my opinion which is Red Light Paradise and Hyde. You have to realize that the more commercial albums can be beneficial such as Queensryche’s Operation: Mindcrime because it helps get people INTO the band in the first place. Musical taste is something that has to be built upon so you have to start from some point to reach a higher level of understanding for older and more “difficult” albums to break into. Plus if you’re to the point like me of being autistic with how far you go to analyze the lyrics and riffs and over symbolism and message of the music you really have to build your palate to that point. I always try to be fair with the lesser albums and avoid saying it “sucks,” etc basically. Although we can all agree that pop/mainstream music does suck. 😅

Good list; hard to argue with Mountain King as their best. I'd put Gutter and Streets in 2 and 3, but Sirens/Dungeons (I grew up with a release that put them together as 1 CD) is right up there. I frankly need to spend more time with Power Of The Night. I prefer the albums with Chris on guitar and Jon on vocals; Zack was good, but he also sounded like 20 other late 80s/early 90s metal singers. That said, I do really like Dead Winter Dead. The albums after that (Magellan and Poets) sound more like TSO and I always wondered why they even bothered releasing them as Savatage given that TSO was in full force by then.

I like your list, except I would move "Gutter Ballet" up to number 2, and I would move "Poets and Madmen" up above "Wake of Magellan." I don't think Savatage recorded a bad album, and I enjoy the progressive, symphonic elements, hence why I put "Gutter Ballet" at number two. I also think "Poets and Madmen" is a very underrated album with some killer songs.

I was so sure I knew your least favorite was going to be 'Fight for the Rock'... and I was so WRONG. 😁 'Gutter Ballet' brought Savatage into my life as a teen, and I suspect that's why I've always loved the later and more symphonic albums. I believe 'Streets: A Rock Opera', together with Queensryche's 'Operation: Mindcrime', are the two most listened to albums in my entire music collection. To me, the earlier and more metal sounding Savatage albums (which I obviously discovered AFTER Gutter Ballet had blown me away) always felt a bit simplistic to me. Not "bad" of course, but never as interesting as the more symphonic and bombastic stuff, and that feeling just never went away. I even adore 'Dead Winter Dead'. The first ten minutes of that album ranks among the greatest album openings I've ever experienced, and I think Zak really delivers a dynamic and fantastic vocal performance here. Not many vocalists do "silky smooth" quite like Zak Stevens, and I think his harsher (and often far from perfect) delivery is great as well, like when he steps it up a couple of notches at the end of 'He Carves His Stone' on Edge of Thorns. A raw and gloriously tormented barrage of vocals that I've only come to appreciate more over the years. So, yeah... I guess I'm pretty much diametrically opposite to how most hardcore Sava fans feel about the discography. 😆
@RuthlessMetalYT2 жыл бұрын
There are a few that I barely listen to I almost always go with the top 7 or so Savatage albums when I listen to them. Yeah the early Savatage wasn't as unique as later SAVATAGE. THAT'S FOR SURE. Cheers!

Well, I'm not too familiar with all of their discography, but I've at least heard something from each of their albums anyway. So, of the stuff I know, though I truly love "Hall Of The Mountain King" to bits, that's still my runner-up; my favourite Savatage album is instead "Gutter Ballet" (also one of my favourite albums ever, metal or not). I feel "GB" is the perfect balance between their early power metal and later symphonic periods. I still think "HOTMK" is basically perfect, but "GB" is just on another level for me: it's equally fast, heavy, powerful, violent, majestic, sophisticated, captivating, haunted, profound... Also, I found "Power Of The Night" a bit disappointing as nothing from it really stood out for me and isn't a great-sounding album. As for "Sirens", I found it a bit too unripe overall (though there are some indisputable masterpieces there), also the production was somewhat unrefined, which doesn't help. I agree that "The Dungeons Are Calling" deserves mentioning, as some stuff on that is ridiculously good.

Yes, they have a handful of masterpieces that's for sure. Cheers!

I remember hearing bits of stuff after Hall and thinking wtf happened here? Horns and broadway show tunes,lol. I guess its time to revisit the "chorus line" lps. Cheers

@BlackieNuff2 жыл бұрын
Poets & Madmen is not a concept album in the strictest sense. It was just supposed to be a regular album but I guess someone got he idea to tie in the songs with a concept story arc. If you read the liner notes that tells the story and then look at the lyrics and listen to the songs, you can tell this is just a "concept" album "in name only". Fight For The Rock is seriously under-rated and not nearly as bad as anyone (including the band) say it is. The covers are not that bad, if only in hindsight (at the time they probably definitely would have been ignored by me when I was a "metal snob" and only liked the heavy stuff). The good songs on the album are GOOD and make up for the weaker ones. TSO is not a "continuation" of Savatage, cos Savatage still carried on alongside TSO. TSO is more like a "spin-off". Jon Oliva's Pain (JOP) is more like the "continuation" of Savatage, as Criss' unfinished and demo ideas were used in these albums, especially towards the end when the final album was released simply under the name "Oliva" (2013's Raise The Curtain). Streets is technically not supposed to include the "A Rock Opera" subtitle. It was just a description that producer Paul O'Neill made on the music sheets or track list (for Atlantic's reference) , and it was assumed to be part of the title. The two versions of Jesus Saves should have been included on the "narrative" reissue, NOT replace the BETTER one with the "original demo" arrangement. I find the original released heavy version the best to open the album with (after the title track, of course), and the longer "gospel" version works excellently as a reprise to close out the album. I'll never understand why it was not done that way, cos screwing the album and the fans out of the heavy version of the song is a crime. The Dungeons Are Calling should have been the debut release, since it was an EP, but I understand it was only an EP cos it was the "leftover" songs that the label at the time refused to allow included on Sirens without making the album a "double-length". So technically, TDAC is a "Sirens Part II" release, and should be included with Sirens when Sirens is reviewed, and not excluded just cos of its EP status. Eventually, it was finally re-released as one complete album (around 2010 or 2011, as part of the EarMUISC box set that released all the albums individually - in a jumbled order ; totally stupid move, btw - and the CD title spines formed the Savatage logo in red set against a black field). Personally, I Believe (Sirens track 3 pun intended) that they should have used TDAC as the collective title, not Sirens. But I suppose it's a small consolation that both titles were used, separated by a forward-slash - make all fans happy, I guess, haha.
@RuthlessMetalYT2 жыл бұрын
Yes, TSO is not a continuation because Savatage continued on but you know what I meant. But Dungeons was released as a separate thing. Thinkgs don't always go as planned but you dont call Sabbath's Seventh Star a Tony Iommi album even if that was the intention when they recorded it. :) Cheers!

I liked Savatage when they were a power metal band on their earlier releases. I had bought The Dungeons Are Calling when I was a teen in the 80s only because of the Combat record label it was on, because a lot of the albums I was buying were bands on the Combat label kicked ass. I didn't care for their whole symphonic metal change. I heard a manager of theirs took the singer to an opera or something, and that put that seed in the singer's head to start up with that change. That manager should be pimp slapped. Sirens is awesome.
@RuthlessMetalYT2 жыл бұрын
That's Paul O'Neill and he shouldnt be pimp slapped because without him they would have no financing of Hall of the Mountain King and Gutter Ballet for example.

Hey, for $35, to see Machine Head and all their different line ups (at least that's what they're saying. Not sure 100% but regardless) play for 4 hours? To be that cheap? Why not? 😁🤘 It's at a kick ass bar/venue here in downtown Charleston which I've been to before not that long ago to see GWAR so I couldn't pass the opportunity up! 😁🤘

my favorites are Power of the Night, Hall of the Mountain King, and Dungeons are Calling. Sirens is second only because of the terrible Twisted Little Sister aka going down, down, down to the Penitentiary. My top 3 are equal. Favorite songs Unusual Sirens Beyond the Doors of the Dark Grace of the Witch Scream Murder 24 Hours Ago Midas Knight Fountain of Youth Hall of the Mountain King I Believe Hyde Gutter Ballet Hounds Edge of Thorns No Downtown Jesus, or Dead Winter Dead really do it for me, but I don't hate their Rock Opera albums, just not my preference. I used to own the complete Savatage catalog, but decided to donate them to the Pawn shop because I just never listened to them often enough

"The Dungeons Are Calling" may be an EP, but it's still 6 original songs w/a running time of 25 minutes. Maybe 1 song away from qualifying as a LP. I would rank it 2nd overall, I like your rankings, but I would switch FFTR with The Wake of Magellan. True, FFTR was disappointing, but they showed signs of this with a few tracks on POTN as they were pressured by their label to go in a more radio friendly direction, but it's still the Olivas in their prime, just not their best effort. \m/

Really? I expected Poets and Madmen to be at the lowest rank, but it surprised me to see it at the very last. For me, I would change position with Fight for the Rock. But of course, it’s a matter of personal taste. I do love the concept albums; that said, I agree With Hall of The Mountain King a the top, but my second favorite is Streets: A Rock opera. The rest will depend on my mood, but the first two and the last two remain. R.I.P Criss Oliva one of my favorite guitar players of all time… I really though it was over for Savatage when he died, but even though it wasn’t the same, I’m glad they kept making music.
