I like that, "easy keeper", that's me too. I'm low maintenance, which definitely saves money, but also time! And maybe stress too... spending all that money on nails, and then one chips or breaks, that would be so aggravating. I may be plain, but I'm care free (ish). :)

I quit soda. Instead of thinking of it like giving it up, I made sure I had bottles of water filled up in the fridge. Every evening before bed, I made sure they were all full, so they would be cold the next day, because that's a big deal for me. I then told myself that it was perfectly fine to have the soda, but not until I had drunk all the water. The number of days where I actually had soda quickly went down, until I was so used to drinking water that I had stopped buying the soda all together. This was over a year ago, and these days I buy soda maybe once a month.

Soda is nowhere near as hard to break as smoking. I have been smoke free for 3 months now and I had to use a prescription to do it. I weened myself off of soda and have been soda/caffeine free for 2 weeks with zero side effects. Just ween yourself off so you don't get caffeine withdrawal headaches and you're good to go. I feel so much better and most of my anxiety issues are gone with no caffeine. Wish I had done it a long time ago.

Dana, your videos are the best! You are so funny! I wear makeup, but you give so many options to cut back on or cut out that I am not even feeling bad about it. I am debt free now and just added makeup back into my budget this year. I love the instant pot suggestion. I use mine all the time and I usually cook 2-3x what I will need for a meal and freeze the rest. I use it to make soups, rice, quinoa, chili, yogurt etc. I freeze everything except yogurt in glass pyrex and reheat for another meal. It really does help the budget.

The problem with make up is that it has an expiry date otherwise is not good for your skin. I have to do make up for work but I try to keep it simple as just foundation eye shadow and mascara. Everything else I do as well, it is all about habits and focus and it can be hard. It also helps to know why we spend on things we know we could save, for example buying coffee,for me was a habit to stop and get my coffee before to work and with time I realized that I was feeling anxious about going to work, specially on hard days so stopping by the coffee shop was my break from anxiety. Getting your nails done for many is a break to feel spoiled , same with hair dying or shopping, and when you have hard times in your life is when you probably spend the most amount of money. So for me to start changing these habits is realized why I want to spend the money, redirect my focus in why I am saving and what can I do for free or cheap to feel good and have my breaks.
@annat92985 жыл бұрын
Yes true if it's a hard time to make myself feel guilty I have been buying lottery tickets and extra things I normally wouldn't buy. The trick is to simplify life so only interact with people and places that raise my positivity. Move away from toxic family and friends, relax in a Paarl with some similar food- apple and tea, have a sauna, extra long shower and make the home enjoyable to love in UE no mess less clutter.

Hi again.. I would also like to add that I don't buy lots of toiletries. I have a bar of soap, toothpaste(cheapest), shampoo and conditioner and some oil such as rose oil that I put on face and hands. That's it. Also food wise, I make a lot of sauerkraut from cabbage and salt and I I make Mexican style beans from soaking and cooking up dried beans and adding some spices. I eat a lot of this. It's delicious and food don't come cheaper than this. Thanks Dana, you're lovely. I would like to see more on how to grow money for the future when you don't have much coming in (I'm disabled) don't have savings or anything else(except emergency fund) and are already in mid 40's. Kelly that's pretty inspirational. I'm nearly 40 with disability. It is difficult to even volunteer one day a week... let alone maintain a job. Toiletries are one thing I can cut back on. Most my make up is $2- $14. I don't use much, comfortable with out it. But I do find it therapeutic to have a pampering day at home. Face mask and foot soak.

For those switching to cloths instead of paper towels, you don't have to put them in the machine! I wash mine in the sink when it's clean or in a bowl with a tiny bit of washing powder. Maybe it would be more frugal to use the machine, but I wash cloths separately because they're likely to be much dirtier and i don't mix them with clothes.

I love your videos and look forward to the new ones each week. For the people out there that are trying to cut back but find they have to go to a restaurant from time to time I have 2 suggestions. First, check the senior menu choices or even the kids menu. Even if your not 55 most restaurants will let you order from those choices. Many years ago I had gastric bypass surgery and when I went to restaurants I discreetly would tell the server about my surgery and I could make choices from the kids menu. But biggest thing I found was not ordering a beverage with my meal. Just water with lemon. I was very surprised how much beverages cost at restaurants. I hope these help others who are cutting back.
@sjordan70856 жыл бұрын
For those who still wish to dye their hair, they sell hair dye at the Dollar Store. And, there comes a point, when one has already eliminated the items mentioned that the only way to save money is to either make and sell items, sell items one already has, or get an extra or PT job. Having a bread maker saves money, because you can bake a loaf for a lot less than buying one and also add extras such as sun-dried tomatoes to make it gourmet. I buy small pieces material at thrift stores which I use to make home- made gifts, and picked up a container of sample materials from a furniture store, all free including large pieces of leather. Casinos off Senior Buffets one day a week for around $5.00, a great deal for retired people and no need to gamble, just go for the food. For gardeners swapping plants with friends saves money as does swapping fruits, veggies and flowers from the garden.

No eating out, just paying my bills, no yard sales or dollar tree and I have been having money at the end of my month. Not a lot but more than in the past. I get social security so it has been exciting to have a little money at the end. then yesterday, I HAD to have a root beer, so I stopped off at a gas station and went in to get a fountain drink "cause they are cheaper" , I absolutely went craaazy, I not only bought a root beer, I bought a breakfast burrito AND a scratch off lottery card. I have felt sick ever since..and NO!!! I didn't win on the scratch off. I not only felt like I failed myself but I had failed you in some way. Her house cost is the same as ours along with a-lot of other circumstances and it was short term. I am super excited that I found a service that lends cloth diapers to you free for the length your babies in diapers. So with are little guy coming any day we can give them a try with no additional costs. (well other then a bit of laundry). Will add cutting out that juice and soda will help keep the dentist away.

My husband and I used to use a washing machine at the church's student house that we had belonged to... also our friends across the street didn't have a washing machine so we let them use ours for a while. We used to use it as an excuse to hang out. Maybe there is someone who would be willing to let you use their washing machine? Also, my work has one on premises so as long as I wear their scrubs, I don't have to pay for those laundry costs. In case that is an option for you.

Rinse out, let dry, THEN add to laundry pile. I have a stack of cheap washcloths for this purpose and even if I go though one per day that's still only a handful. If you're cleaning up a lot of spills in the kitchen, only pour things over the sink. Manage other people so less messes are made (kids can do a lot of their arts, crafts, experiments outside. Use TP to clean up after cats and dogs then flush (unless what you're flushing goes into ocean).

I loved this video! I am fairly new to minimalism and I am loving it. My husband had a stroke last year and we had to really scale back due to enormous medical bills and the fact that he can no longer work. I work full time and have made cutting back my new hobby. I have done all the things you suggested with no problem at all. I will admit the one thing I struggle with is eating out. I could never eat out again and be just fine. My husband likes to get out of the house at least twice a week and go to a favorite restaurant. They are not expensive, but I know we shouldn't be doing it. I just feel bad that sometimes I have to say no. We will go more often than not, so it is a struggle since he enjoys it and doesn't really understand that we need to save more. Any suggestions? We are 63 and we are so blessed that we have each other. Thank you for your videos. They are inspiring😊

So sorry your family is facing this. If you have items others would buy, try selling them. Look at your car insurance if spouse no longer drives, get that on your policy. Also reconsider your coverages. Contact your county to see If there is any assistance for your situation. There is no shame in getting food stamps. If you are his care giver your health insurance may pay you a stipend or I know the VA will pay for you to get some caregiver respite. Go to local library, they may have social services reps who can help you navigate.

Maybe sometimes you could do him a special meal at home instead. Make all his favourites, dress up, make a fuss of him, put on music etc. A picnic is a very good idea though as your husband values opportunities to get out of the house. Hi Dana! I'd love to cut my cable, but I don't want to lose my local programming (ABC, NBC, CBS). I've done some research, but I'm still not clear. Would you be able to do a video on the details?? Thanks!

Marie Fizel We bought an antenna that cost about $50 for our local channels. We only have problems with reception when it rains.

I keep my hair natural only. I cut it myself. My hair stylist told me exactly how 30 years ago and I never went back. I invested in good shears. No manicures/pedicures, never have. No makeup. No clubs/gymns. I drink water. I cook beans/lentils/rice etc, saves a lot & delicious. I don’t drink alcohol. No cable tv. I cut wherever I can.

Thank you for the tips! I would advise those who want to continue to color their hair to 1. not buy over the counter colorants. (highly chemically latent; much more than professional color lines.) 2. Use an ammonia free, oil base colorant, from a licensed professional; regardless of cost. Think industrial grade ingredients vs. pharmaceutical grade... Let's not put floor cleaner on our heads... If you want to save money just stop coloring all together. When dealing with chemicals- store bought is incredibly unhealthy. I'm a chemist :)

Me, me, me... Do I know you? I'm addicted to soda. Grew up in a family restaurant where soda is my water. (The water smells in Santa Barbara, CA. People who live here knows. That's how Brita got invented.) In college I drank soda rather than expensive Starbucks. I guess that sealed the deal. I have to dye my hair. I have premature grey since I was 11. But I hear coffee grinds can due hair. And another killer bad habit I have is I eat out 90% of the time. (Yes. I'm a bad parent.) But cooking for everybody's particular tastes is exhausting. One good habit I have; I guess; is I try to wash my own cars & my own pets. I have 4 cars and 4 long hair dogs. Each of which will cost me $16+ each to wash. Although, recently one car wash place offers a whole month of car washes for the price of one. But I still feel that will be $64/month for all 4 cars. I mean I do have a hard time vacuuming my own carpets and I love that lemon scent they put in my car... What do you think? Wash my own or take it out.

I don’t drink soda. Just coffe in the morning that I make at home. After that, just water. I got rid of cable. I got rid of my AT&T cellphone bill as soon as the contract was up and went with a prepaid plan. Saved $41 a month. I got rid of my landline bill by purchasing a unit called Ooma. All you pay is $3.99 a month tax. I work at home so I don’t wear makeup everyday, but I wear it on weekends. I buy my work clothes at Goodwill. I don’t need nice clothes in my home office. My problem area is groceries and pet supplies. I’m spending way more than I think I should.

I don’t drink alcohol. I can take it or leave it, so I decided to leave it. I color my hair, but I do it myself. I don’t have my nails done. No way I’m blowing money on that. I have known people that couldn’t pay their electric bill, but would pay for acrylic nails. I can’t give up paper towels. I ha e dogs. Some of them make nasty messes. No way I’m cleaning that with my wash cloths.

Hair and nails.....eek, those are my two vices. I know this costs a lot, but for now that is my treat....my smokes and drinks money. Lol. Mind you, in an emergency they’d be the first things to go.

I cannot give up makeup but you do look nice even without makeup. I do my nails at home. I will never go to the restaurant ever with my own money. When you said that your child went to his first restaurant at 6, I really admired your determination.

Yes to pressure cooker! Totally love ours n way healthier to cook legumes this way - removes lectins. The not eating out part is really hard esp bc in most cases it's going to be one person who is the "chef" in the family. But yes it's crazy how much is spent eating out. I would also say that having a home based business is a great way to save $$ bc it can maximize write offs like : gym, cell phone, cable & paid music, office equipment & supplies.

How do on line shop without using a credit card?
@mk-sw9ow5 жыл бұрын
Using a debit card actually has the exact same protection as a credit card. Your debit card actually says which credit card company backs it and their websites state that the protection is the same. If that freaks you out buy visa gift cards to use online.

Great tips. I do all of those except not wearing makeup. But I'm a sahm of 6 so I only wear it when I go out or do a sit down video. I only replace makeup maybe twice a year. Only thing I can think of to add would be to cook as much of your food from scratch as you can. It tastes much better and costs pennies compared to store bought and much healthier, which will also save money in the long run.

In the past I used Votech schools for some maintenance on my car and for hairdressing needs. If I'm out doing errands or traveling and need to get something to eat to keep my blood sugar from falling low I try to stick to something that is about 2 bucks total that could be 7-Eleven hot dog w drink $2.22 special, McDonald's saussge burrito and Senior coffee, or Burger King nuggets 10. I get a lot of my cleaning supplies and personal care items at the Dollar Tree or I shop at Lidil and Aldi's for great produce deals. I use Freecycle alot, shop at thrift stores try to get there on the days that they have specials. I try to recycle and upcycle things like my clothes or ordinary items that I might throw out in the trash, and plastics. I grow herbs; basil is great on frozen pizza. that's another thing, I try to not buy pizza out, which is terribly expensive! I will try to get a good frozen pizza and I add a few more toppings of my own choosing to Jazz it up. I have Roku also and it is so worth it I enjoy it very much

Dang! $65 dollars to dye your hair is a steal! $160 is the going rate here. I just do it at home and it takes sometime however is cost like 10 bucks. I'm proud of myself that I am a professional DIYer I have no Gym membership, don't eat out, dont drink soda, make coffee at home, don't have cable, DIY my nails or hair when I want to, rarely use paper towels, However makeup and alcohol are a killer on my budget. Sadly this isnt what is keeping me down healthcare bills :/

I do every single thing you stated (even veganism) except I do get my hair professionally highlighted 3x per year. It is about $100 each time but now that I'm graying, it looks a lot better, a lot longer. I used to have it done 5x per year. Also, I do wear makeup but spend $50 per year on makeup but it's always drug store brand with the exception of my 1 tube of $15 natural mascara I buy from the health food store 1x per year to keep my eyes from burning. I also don't completely eliminate anything if I REALLY want it. I like sparkling flavored water but buy the cheap store brand and mix it with a couple ounces of juice. Very refreshing. You remind me of Lindsey of Lindsey's Frugal Life, now defunct channel.

Wet & Wild, Olay, Aveeno, Neutrogena, sunblock, and buff my nails saves me tons of money. No more department store brands. Take good of your skin and you will not need much makeup at all. I also color my roots at home with a $3 bottle of L'oreal. I buy Bustelo to brew at home instead of going to Starbucks. Recently been buying facial tissues at the 99 cent store instead of the supermarket.

You are so inspiring. I am 53 and have never dyed my hair & never will. I recently went to Seattle to visit my daughter, so I got my nails done for the first time ever. I wear very little makeup, very low maintenance. I was able to save & purchased a brand new bed for our spare bedroom today. We drive older cars, no payments for us. We live below our means, he will retire in a few years & I am disabled, so yeah we are preparing for that. BTW you're a Beautiful lady. with a Beautiful spirit.
