I take my son to Aldi's, and we buy what's on the list. My son (8-year old) keeps track on what we spend, and if we stay within the budget, he can choose a treat for 1 EUR. He thinks it's fun, he is motivated to stay within the budget because of the treat and in the meantime he get's some financial education ☺️ plus he doesn't nag because we make choices together 😉 last he said, shopping with me was his favorite thing to do 🤭

Calling grocery shopping date night is NOT sad. My husband and I love to grocery shop together and we canoodle in some aisles or near the produce…it’s totally a date night. Saving money is alluring - I find my frugal husband more attractive when he talks budget and savings with me. We are not money oriented but goal oriented. We set financial goals and the money we save goes to those things that mean the most to us.

This month my church had a food giveaway in addition to the usual bimonthly food pantry. They encouraged anyone and everyone to come, partly because we will be getting more trucks and did not want to have to send back any food. It was not just for church but for the entire community. We went ahead and picked up an order (just drive through and they fill your car), it was really impressed with all we got including fresh vegs, fruits, basics and some snacks. In order to cut down on our grocery shopping that has helped with saving money and losing a bit of weight is to do intermittent fasting with doctor's supervision. Most of the time my husband & I eat only two big meals and no snacks, and we find that we do not have hunger pains. I would strongly recommend doing the fasting with your doctor's advice. Saying "Can't" is a bad thing. Don't say can't. Say "I am always learning/figuring out new ways to save money". Leave it open for possibilities, don't close the door. You will let tips and bargains slip past you, because you have given up looking. Also, you SHOULD buy that favorite box of cereal. You have changed, and compromised your shopping to save money, but you still need to enjoy life. I say, if you don't go out to buy meals, I think that you can have a little item (like a special type of cereal), because some things enhance your quality of life. You need to save money. But you also need to remember to be kind to yourself.

Wow!!!! Amazing Savings!!!! And excellent advice! It's good to keep an open mind and a positive attitude. There's no telling how much you can save if you think about what you are spending your money on. Great idea to track the cost of foods and how long they last! I love berries on my oatmeal, but a pint of berries was costing almost $4 in Canada, and often the berries would go bad before I could eat them all! Instead, I can buy 2 kg of frozen berries, defrost them and add them to my oatmeal, and it costs me only about $12 for 2-3 months! As a single person, buying some frozen fruits and vegetables is a huge cost savings.

@@Thathat-o7wgreat advice! I keep extra food in one of my closets, I just make sure everything is sealed, you could even store under your bed I wonder where this person lives? I also recommend buying things in the simplest form Ex. Buy canned tomato sauce and flavor it rather than buying jarred sauce. Buy whole produce instead of prechopped or mixed bags (frozen can be comparable with certain things too) Make meals in a similar cuisine for the week so you can spread out items and avoid waste Make a double batch of dinner so you can have it again for lunch or dinner in the next couple days (mini batch cooking) Do inventory: what has been sitting that you aren't using up? Write those down and stop buying those for awhile.. Are there pre-made things? (Serve you once and then you're out of it, like frozen food, sauce packets, fruit cups, etc) see if you can make it or buy a bigger pack Make a list of easy/fast meals that satisfy you and put it on your fridge. (Stir-fry, pb&j, eggs, pasta and sauce, etc) On days you're not feeling it, make one of those so you don't fall into takeout or pre-made food, make sure you are always stocked on those foods

I find eating the same thing all week for at least breakfast or lunch or dinner works to save money and makes shopping easier. Like oatmeal every morning for week one, cereal for week two, yogurt week three. Lunch= soup every day week one, sandwiches week two, salad for week three, etc. it also means less food waste. Does it get a bit boring - sometimes but then the next week brings something different. Doesn’t work well with kids, but works great if it’s just you or you and a like minded significant other who wants to save money. It’s an idea to try when you want to try like a no spend month. Thanks for the videos and I loved the bloopers at the end.

My 4 year old son wants to buy stuff that has characters on it(pasta and yogurts) or yogurt with the MnM's in them. I know that drives up or food budget. He also gravitates to the Go Go squeeze containers instead of the big containers of applesauce even though it's the same stuff. The big containers sit in our fridge but the squeeze type are gone within a week. When you mentioned oatmeal, it reminded me that I love to add in raisins which gives it a sweeter taste and healthier. I like to add the raisins and apples(if I'm using them) when I add the oats so they are soft. I love to buy hamburger when it is on sale (0.88 cent/lb) and then bag it up in in quart sized bags and freeze it until I'm ready to use it. I find that it doesn't go to waste that way. It is easy to cook if I take it out of the freezer the night before. I want to learn how to be a ninja shopper and love all of your tips. I love buying meats when they are on sale, cooking them all at once and then I have it ready made for whatever I want to make something else. I've just realised we have always shopped every week, on auto pilot just ingrained, and actually we could shop every 10 days instead. We do weekly mostly because of the fresh items. But by growing some of our own veggies and keeping some extras in the freezer we can stretch a shop longer. We've just started buying the larger milk and decanting some into another bottle to freeze for later in the week instead of the x2 smaller bottles. Kind of like we do with bulk rices/pasta/pulses etc. Also, although we're missing out on some of the last chance bargains, by shopping online I have found that I can really stick to my budget because it is easier to scroll down the basket and eliminate items.

looking at the unit price on the sales label. also checking that the unit price is using the same measurements (ex. both using oz etc) . that can get you to. sometimes generic is cheaper and other times I can get the name brand for cheaper. I look at the day old/reduced baked goods. sometimes they are cheaper then making your own from scratch. (chocolate chips are so so expensive) I also am learning how to take basic ingredients I have to make something I might buy. recently I found a brownie recipe that my family thinks is better than the box. Having items that can make a hefty meal for cheap. pasta, rice, barley, etc. make a sauce steam some veggies. having canned, fresh, and frozen veggies to make a more filling meal. always have flour, sugar, baking powder and soda, brown sugar, etc. so you can always make a biscuit, roll, cookies. Buy them in bulk. stored properly they do last. buy those items that have multiple purposes, having baking ingredients the possibilities are endless. Have a cake mix or pancake mix can be limiting. you pay for the processing and the convenience. cut your own veggies, make your own cheese slices or shredded from a block of cheese. find out what is in your favorite frozen meals and play in the kitchen find out if you can make more and for cheaper and it tastes the same. I guess a lot of my strategies are more what to buy to lower the bill. How you use the food you do purchase can make a huge difference to. make a big crock pot of pulled pork. one night have sandwiches the next night put it in a burrito or quesadilla. remix the big dinners to make them last several nights without feeling like you are eating leftovers.. I could go on and on...

Best bang for the buck in food is rice. Buy a 20 or 50lb bag. Pairs with so many veggies and meats. Cheap and calorie dense. If you like eating rice like I do it can really cut your food bill down. Warms up good in microwave so it's great for leftovers and meals to take to work. Long shelf life and once cooked, keeps well in fridge or freezer so will help cut down on waste as well. Eating all the food and cutting waste is as important as buying at good prices. So there are two components to food frugality: buying it at good prices and then making sure you actually use it all and throw away as little as possible.

I have two more tips for you based on portion size. - reduce portion size of expensive produce. If normally make 8 burgers out of a pack of ground meat, try making 9, or even 10 instead. I bet your family will not see a difference but you'll have 1 or 2 "free" burgers! For those with big appetites and hollow-legged teenagers, add more veg or side dishes and reduce the size of the steak/chicken breast / chop / etc. - plate up in the kitchen and put a little less of every on everyone's plate. Rarely will anyone want more (if they genuinely do then they absolutely can have seconds!). Not having a big pot on the table keeps temptation at bay and insures you have some leftovers for another meal or at least a lunch. A friend of mine does this and gets a "free" lunch to take to work 2-3 times a week.

When I leave the house I take a drink with me so I'm not spending $2-$5 while I am out. I agree 100% on this video. I raised 2 girls as a single mom using this exact strategy. Thanks for sharing this video.

Great tips, we dont have the same number of offers and discounts in my country, but I just took your advice on re evaluating sources and found my electricity provider is part of the same bonus scheme as my local supermarket and I just needed to update some info on a scheme i am already apart of to get 2% off my electricity Bill each month, the discount can either go directly to groceries or i can get it paid back to my account. Definitely worth checking the app, especially before winter comes!

AMEN!!! I spend at least double when I bring my kids and husband with me 😅 And we buy so much unnecessary products because of tantrums and going in hungry! I have started doing mini trips alone and getting sale items only and reducing bringing the kids when I can!

Did you know decaf coffee is processed with chemicals. Please research it! Love your show. Learning a lot. We are in our 70’s and do live a frugal life style.. we moved to central California 8 years ago from Peoria. It’s weird to hear you both talk about places we enjoyed hiking at. Anyway life in California is expensive so your advice for grocery shopping is very helpful. Thank you both for your weekly programs.

I use grocery pickup at Walmart here in Denver during the school year (busy teacher) and this helps my budget so much. I see exactly what I am spending before I hit the submit. I shop my own fruits and veggies though

Some great tips. Food prices have really shot up in the uk. I find if I home bake our treats ( 2 small kids) we can save a bit instead of buying processed snacks. Ive also stopped buying fruit juice and buy more in season fruit that also keeps the children healthy but fuller at the same time. Weekly I buy a big bag of potatoes and we can use those for a single serving meals like baked potato & cheese, beans or tinned tuna. I also use a roast chicken for multiple meals like curry, soup, pies. Adding lots of veg for sides. I stick to basic meals with a limited amount of ingredients to keep costs down

Potatoes are definitely a staple in our home, too. So versatile! I can always make a meal out of baked potatoes and whatever we can find to throw on top of them.

Down here in FL, Winn Dixie has a program. Each week there are certain items you can get for less as well as building $$ that can be taken off the total.

I make a food plan for 2 weeks at a time. I then look in my freezer/frig and pantry to see what I need to buy I don't have to make those my meals. I make my grocery list by the aisles (produce, meat, dairy, canned food, and frozen foods). If you don't wander up and down the central part of the store, you save time and money!

We take bars of soap that are getting really small and put them into handsoap pump containers for the bathroom sink and add a little water. Saves on soap.

Watching old videos and I’m still cracking up that you included my tip on not taking children and spouses that are distracting. And 2+ years later, it holds true! Somehow my 1 and 3yo are less distracting while grocery shopping than my 8 and 12 year olds and my husband 🙃

One of our best savers we have done is to cut down on the amount of meat, chicken, fish we eat for each meal. That alone has helped us a lot. In addition we also evaluated our condiment usage.. We have cut down on how much ketchup we use each time we use it. It also has helped alot.

I had to laugh so hard about "don't take your kids or husband" :D But luckily, my husband is onboard with me and my desire to safe, so actually it's a lot of fun to hunt for cheap items/items on sale. I personally love reading cookbooks, but you are right: if you want to buy everything on the list for a recipe, it's getting expensive. That's why I always regard cookbooks as suggestions. I don't follow the recipe word by word, but adapt it to what we have/what we like.
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
I'm with you. Our son, Daniel, who loves to help me cook, calls recipes "suggestions". LOL!
