Drew! My traditional teardrop also is not insulated in the side walls. Roof, hatch and floor, yes. As you know we camp northern BC, Yukon and Northwest Territories, from early spring until mid fall. Additionally we use the teardrop up on the local ski hill 2 or 3 times a year. My wife is just about into her 70's, I'm well into mine and we simply are not cold in our teardrop. Nor do we have a diesel heater or a Buddy...just 12V mattress pad, rated sleeping bags and the aforementioned areas insulated. No side wall insulation is inconsequential. Is the Alaska boy going soft on us?

Haha. You may be right I may be getting soft. I think it was the, if you can why not aspect of it. What got me thinking about it was the use of Baltic birch in the camper. What stuck out to me was the ceiling and front wall had a different finish than the sidewalls. Essentially the ceiling and front wall had this really nice matte finish. The sidewalls had more of a glossy finish. And I couldn’t help but thinking why? And then I remembered all my shoulder season and winter camping. And I’m assuming the differences in finishes was to protect for the moisture that builds up more on the side walls versus the other walls. But you’re right, this is going to be a minor inconvenience, compared to a teardrop that has no insulation at all. I’ve never really got the time to share why I do the pros and cons. But this would be a good place for me to share here with you. When I make these videos, I’m not here to sell a camper, I make them to help people understand campers better in general. So, for example, in this video, I could’ve went on a small rant about leafspring axles on a base trailer. Maybe you remember me doing this on the Colorado teardrop. Essentially what I’m doing is looking for features that I haven’t in other videos so I can share a new aspect for people to think about. This would be one of those aspects. Yes, missing sidewalls versus missing an entire trailer of insulation is one thing. But this was more about bringing to the forefront the need for insulation and why many people would benefit from it. I’m glad you brought this up, again really good point.

Yes, with so many companies popping up. It’s really neat to see someone go outside the typical mould. And I think a lot of times people just reinvent the camper trailer to set themselves apart. But often times it’s really not practical in the field. It’s more gimmicky. I think this is a very practical solution for a number of different needs. I know I keep going on about it, but I’m just really impressed. So simple. It’s one of those concepts where I think. Why didn’t I think of that?

Pretty decent square drop at a reasonable price. I too like the modularity and ability to mount things without drilling. Track systems have definitely become more prevalent and utilizing them on the trailer is a good idea. In regards to the modularity, I would think setting up the electrical system to accommodate (or use) a power station would fit well into that philosophy.

One thing that I didn’t ask, but I wish I did. I would like to have known how hard it would be to wire in your own portable power station. I think that would be a neat add-on if they could make a very affordable connection for portable power stations that many of us already own

I think that’s what really sold me instantly on this trailer. I had a feeling after studying it online that I was going to like the design and concept. But it was the price that sealed the deal for me. I was expecting as you grew this trailer and added all the accessories that near the end you’d be as high or higher priced than many of the off-road trailers on the market. This removes that internal conflict when buying the base trailer. If I buy this will I be saving money because I will only need a few of the upgrades? Or will I actually be losing money because in the end I find I I will need all the upgrades? With a pricing model like this you know whatever your future needs are you’re going to end up having a trailer that costs the same or even less than many comparable trailers. Again I think that’s a great model for many reasons. Maybe somebody doesn’t have the budget now but knows they will want the items later. Maybe this is someone’s first trailer and doesn’t really know what they’re going to use on their adventures. And the one I really liked is the fact that I can add my own DIY components all over the rail system and pre-dried holes without doing anything permanently.

Me too! Everyone has a different needs. I need under 1500#. Travel with dog/cat. Won’t pay $40k. The choices are limited at weight & the prices are ridiculous. They over accessorize with things I already have.

Sometimes I feel that way as well. But I have to be getting close to seeing all the major ones. The last time I went to OverlandExpo I was thinking “one more season of this, and I probably won’t will have filmed all the big dogs in the industry.” Which is kind of fun knowing from there I’ll just be searching out all the new ma and pa shops. The other thing to note is that we’re in a bit of a small camper trailer bubble. I think it’s some point in the near future the industry will level off a bit. If you’re searching for a small camper trailer, my guess is there’s no better time than this for variety and options. But in terms of price, there may be better pricing options in the future. I don’t hope for that, because a drop in the small camper economy would hurt many manufacturers, and put a number of them out of business. But at the same time it would be nice for all of us in the community to have more affordable options. I’m hoping it’s more of a gradual decline. Essentially a win-win for everyone.

It's a platform instead of just being customisable - that's great forward thinking! I would have liked to see the same thinking extend to the interior storage options, so you can choose whether you want a bunk, shelves, cupboards, Molle panels, combinations or none of them. Such a simple concept, but like you said, I’m not seeing others doing it. I love having options. And I’ve never really had an issue with everything on my teardrop being stationary. But when I see it through new eyes, all of a sudden I’m thinking how advantageous would it be if I could move things around on the outside of my trailer. There are so many components I’ve had on my trailers that if I had the ability to move it, I would. And there’s a number of components I would just like to try out, but I’m not sure I would actually use them enough to mount them permanently. A great example is a shower. I find our family rarely uses a shower because it’s kind of a pain in the butt to set up every time. But I often wonder if it was permanently mounted, which would mean an easier set up, would I use it more?

These trailers are legit! I was at Lake Powell a few years ago and my kid desperately needed a nap. It was hot and we were in a truly desolate area only accessible by boat… so I thought. Luckily someone had one of these Zion Off Road trailers and let me take a nap with my daughter. It was amazing! Nice and cool, super roomy, all off the grid. Pretty amazing what these guys are doing! Mine is the Five Wide Rough Rider. Well, I probably can't afford to switch, but what I'd like to have is less stuff to cram into the Xterra, like the 12 volt fridge, propane. I have some extra gas on the front of the trailer. I do have a lot of stuff in the galley. One thing that I dislike on the little guy is that I was carrying a four quart, cast iron stovetop Dutch oven in the galley, along with the other stuff. It seems too much weight for it, and the floor of the galley was sagging a bit. So, now I have to carry that elsewhere as I use it a lot; also the cast iron skillet is heavy, of course. I looked under there and do not see any easy way to prop it up. On the Zion, I did not notice what they have for plugging in, like a 12 volt throw, usb port, 120 receptacle. I need the 120 because at home, I keep a small dehumidifier going in there. The west side of Oregon is quite humid, and the dehumidifier is the best way to keep it from getting any musty smells. I hate those things some people use like Damp-Rid.

Thanks for the video. I usually focus on big or well know manufacturers for the general public, but don't take ths time to research truly overlanding/niche manufacturers. I do like the modularity of this trailer. Even completely decked out is affordable. The only thing I don't like is the kitchen. With the e exception od the TV, I would love a kitchen better than the Ember ROK. No TV but with lots of organizational features, a 22in griddle, sink, etc.

increasing width There is another option too... again you could go the poormans option. Wool blankets. since its only the side walls, a winterization package of interior wool blankets designed to be snapped up or velcroed to the inside of the trailer would absorb condensation, increase insulation and even possibly provide an airlock for slipping in and out of the trailer to maintain temperature.

@@PlayingwithSticks yep and as i suggested, depending on how its set up, you could form a small "airlock" with a U shaped "blanket" so you could get in and out, opening and closing the door without loosing much heat inside. just move into the U, open the cover over the door, open the door, hop out, do wht you need to open the outer door sit back in and kick your feet off clear your boots etc. put them inside the door, close the door, close the inner insulation. open the U and move back into the body. then "fold" the U flat against the the body again to get the space back. *looks innocent*

Great video. Hands down my favorite part of the trailer is the ability to do an axle swap from spring to Timbren. That is a core swap and performance upgrade. Question: do insulated walls make that much of a difference? You've camped in AK in the winter so I'm sure it matters some there but you'd always need a cracked window or vent. This is an idea I'm playing with. I've done both insulated and not. I really want data on it. I think the door frames conduct more heat/cold than the walls. Perhaps worth some experimentation.

That’s a good question on the insulation. And I agree the axle swap really impressed me. It was something I was actually going to keep in the video. But I edited it out due to time. Essentially, it was just a part of the video where I was shocked how easy it was when he explained it. Back to the insulation. Anecdotally I have some thoughts on the insulation. I’ve been fortunate now to sleep in cold weather in all four styles (non-insulated, fully insulated, roof/front/floor only, and walls/ceiling/front but not floor. When it comes to fully insulated versus partially insulated, I see very little difference. The biggest difference I notice actually is in regards to outdoor noise. Trailers where the sidewalls aren’t insulated, I tend to hear more campground noise. When the entire trailer is insulated, it’s almost silent. May and I go back-and-forth on “do we actually like this?” We’ve noticed we get an incredible nights sleep in a fully insulated trailer. But at the same time I kind of find myself missing the sounds of the outdoors around me. Even with the windows or fan cracked It’s much quieter inside. In terms of temperature regulation, I honestly can’t tell the difference between a fully insulated and a partially insulated. And then, when it comes to condensation, I find it really comes down to the ratio of door size to sidewall size. Like you mentioned the door tends to be the limiting factor. And even in an insulated trailer, the door conducts cold onto the edges of the sidewalls so even with insulated sidewalls, we find moisture there as well. All of this really doesn’t matter as much when you’re solo camping. But I find with each additional body moisture management becomes much more important. Now you’re not only dealing with insulative properties of the trailer, but also human humidifiers on the inside. Also, probably the biggest thing I should’ve mentioned first, we find more benefit from insulation in the summer months than the winter months. In the winter months, you’re doing a lot of venting and forced heating. Or you’re treating it more like a tent and having quality sleeping bags or electric blankets. So regardless of insulated or not, you’re still bundling up pretty good because you’re letting in a lot of air. In the summer however, we have found an insulated trailer stays much cooler. And I think there’s something to be said about a white roof as well. Our 4 x 8 teardrop really struggled in summer weather but perform pretty well in shoulder season and winter. I find these modern five by eights that are insulated. Feel so much nicer on hundred plus degree days. It’s almost as if it can keep that cold air from the morning in the cabin throughout the day. I don’t know if that’s how it works, but that’s how I’ve been imagining it. We are often surprised to go from our hot annex room or just open outdoor space into the teardrop and it’s actually much cooler than outside. Our 4 x 8 felt a bit more like a greenhouse. I think this is one of the reasons we rarely talk about air conditioners. I realize if you’re living somewhere like Florida it’s probably more necessary. But May and I have never had a moment where we couldn’t get the temperature regulated quickly with just a fan. Primarily this is because we sleep at elevation and the temperatures fall at night. But even the times when we’re sleeping in 100+ degree weather at low elevation, we still have had no issues. And that has been the biggest surprise for us. Our old 4 x 8 at those elevations or a tent and we were pretty uncomfortable. I would love to see you do some experimentation on this!

Another video I’ve been wanting to make for a long time, but I’ve just been too lazy to make, is a gas mileage video around aerodynamics. Essentially taking out two like trailers and tow vehicles and adding gear and stripping them off the exterior. I have felt some pretty big hits from the rooftop tents, but I’d really like to know how much each little component on the outside impacts the overall mileage. Really looking forward to your video Mark! I also must say I’m impressed with your long term dedication to it. That video is going to take a lot of work, but the community will get a lot of value from it.

That would be a great video! Too much stuff stuck to the outsides of most of these trailers. EX: There is no need for a shovel to be on the outside of a trailer. Put it away. BTW - I can see your Davinci Resolve Skills are getting better! @@PlayingwithSticks

This seems to be one of my top options after looking at many trailers and teardrop trailers. I just can’t get past the insulation part. Would it be difficult to add my own insulation with no building experience? Should I rule this out completely if I mainly want to do cold winter camping, when moisture control will be my biggest enemy?

We do a lot of cold weather camping in uninsulated trailers. These trailers are so small, they all will have moisture issues. And in reality they are so small, any heat source just requires you to open your windows anyway. It just gets that hot even on low. So to me, I find insulation to be great for keeping the camper cool in the summer. But, for winter you can definitely get by.

So, we start with as simple a frame as you can get, strong, durable, rust resistant. then a bolt on wheel and suspension system... simple and cheep, but set where you can change suspensions, change wheels, change/add shocks, even add an axle. but for the base model keep it simple. next a "boxy" cabin. as few "cuts" and holes in it as possible, no curves, keep it limited to slopes and straight pieces. limits the wasted wood, keeps integrity up, insulation up, and cost and build time down as you don't need to worry about curves, rounding, and such. limit hull pass throughs to the galley area. on either side of the galley, so if you WANT you can run power into the galley, propane, and water. THEN make the galley and back wall of the trailer 100% replaceable. There would contain your lights and entertainment center for the sleeping area... the cook stove if you want one... the grey water tank, if you want one, the sink if you want one... etc. but as base model, everything is flat, simple and basic. quick to mass produce, quick to assemble. No fancy cuts, not special cad programs etc. From there, you get the options, Heat/power, could be mounted in the galley. and pass through to the living area, if you choose to mount it. lights for the cabin if your using them would be based off the galley back... fan power if you mount the roof fan again would come from the galley. nothing running through the inside of the walls, but as an external power line from the galley along the ceiling. then, mount everything else external, as addon options. propane, power, water, water gravity fed water tanks, hot water on demand, propane tanks, option for extra external batteries etc :)

That base price is steep! For the same price l can get an off road fully insulated trailer from the Tiny Camper Company that comes standard with the Timbren suspension and larger tires, is made of composite instead of wood and is easily upgraded for far less than $20k. There’s some great ideas but it’s too to pricey compared to the competition. It also needs a widow on the sides.

Good point here. As you probably noticed tiny camper company and Zion off Road kind of have different build philosophies. I would say tiny camper is in the extreme budget realm and these guys are in the upper budget to low mid range realm. Wait, tiny camper is making composite trailers now?

Loved the design modularity of this camper, but the swing-out vs swing-up rear door to access the galley is really a turn-off. It feels more like storage shelves vs a real teardrop galley, with limited access without bumping your head on the back of the camper.

Ours have been skyrocketing as well. But it’s actually the smaller camper market that is skyrocketing the larger caravans in America seem to stay fairly stable. Odd times right now in the small camper industry. I’m really interested to see where the prices will land in the next few years.

@@PlayingwithSticks mine is in my profile picture. Just got a 2x2.5 annexe and annexe tent to go off the back of it for a kitchen and shade area. I have a portable toilet and gas water heater and heading off today. 😀. I brought the box part and tent n me and the father in law built the frame and trailer.

I think it was mentioned, but now I can't remember. One of the first upgrades you can buy is a bolted on axel-less suspension.

You should check out their website. It’s really neat. They have these in four stages of build. Yes, you can buy everything individually but I liked how they have these upgrade stage packages. It really puts the pricing into perspective.

Yes, wasn’t that part confusing? I was looking for it everywhere in my edit. I can’t remember what happened on site. But for some reason I think we did the entire take in the upgraded version. Maybe somebody was playing in that trailer at the time. Sorry about that. From what I remembered though they were pretty identical. In 2023 they really didn’t have interior upgrades. But from a comment from them today it sounds like they’ll be interior upgrades for 2024.

While it would cost more, i wouldn't mind to see the propane system "integrated". picture propane ports on either sides by the fenders and at the front. allowing you to plug the propane tank in at any of those points... THEN access the propane from anyone of those points as well, for example' plug your propane in on the right side, then access the propane feed from the left side, where you mount an table with propane wok so you don't need to unbolt and move tanks. electrical won't mind to see it mirrored on both sides then with a system up front, where you could connect solar panels there, run with external batteries, or pass through directly inside for solar generator. Drew, to me that rear door swing out, screams of wasted space. Picture if it had a "lift up" cover, giving you top down shelter from rain. Oh oh oh, how about this, a lift out "shelf" where you lift a "counter" area to give you almost a wrap around kitchen. increasing your prep area the entire length of the door? *looks innocent*

These thoughts are golden. And so practical. I’ve been running into the propane mounting issue frequently the last couple of years. Now that we primarily use a discada I find more need for multiple propane outlets. Because we still use our traditional stove as well. And every campsite and style of camping we do all tend to have different needs. The propane mount at one site is in the perfect location and then the next site I wish it was somewhere different. And I kept second-guessing that galley as well. I kind of gave up the fight and just thought, hiker trailer is one of the most sold trailers out there. There must be a reason people like this very simple paired down galley. But you’re right, I would prefer that door to swing up. I ran into the same thing with my cargo trailer. I like the drop-down ramp on some and the swing out door on mine. But I’m finding what I really want is a swing up door. That lift out shelf, so simple but that would really maximize the space. I feel like we highlighted the trailer recently that had some sort of modular “L” shelf in the galley. But now, for some reason, I can’t remember which trailer had it.

@@PlayingwithSticks Thanks drew, but picture this, that rear door, swing out, then, grab an inner part of the door and pull IT UP, now you have both a side wall and roof to your galley. then under that you pull up the table/shelf and lock that into place, 2 walls + ceiling + wrap around counter space. When ready to move, drop the shelf, drop the roof and close the back door.

I have not seen any good designs for overlanding and or living full time in your vehicle / trailer at all , I am going to have to design my own trailer & market / sell them but it's crazy how stupid these trailers are and what you need you do not have which is nuts

I really don't have an issue with towing a trailer as I have a 22 footer but, towing a small trailer for overlanding is IMO, quite useless. I pretty much have all those features in just my 4Runner with nothing to tow. In reality, you're just towing a mattress.

I see your point, one I am debating in regards to my Power Wagon…to build the bed or to Tow…or do both…but..if doing both..is it better to spend the $$ on a real pull behind home🤷‍♂️ I see many tear drops..minis…and think I can do all of that with the same prep in utilizing the bed?

You have a good point about tow vehicles and uses. It really comes down to where you want to strap everything down. Is your tow vehicle a mall crawler 90% of the time and an off-road vehicle 10% of the time. In that scenario, I think most people are going to want to deck out the outside of the camper. Leaving the daily commuter, looking less like a zombie apocalypse vehicle and having more space and use for daily routines. Overlanding or just regular camping, all these campers are essentially just a bed on wheels. And I can never really explain it, but the joy that came from living in my jeep to getting a teardrop was so different. I enjoyed them both, but the teardrop changed everything. One felt like I was just getting by, the other felt like I was bringing my den with me. I think if you’re a true minimalist what you are describing with your forerunner, makes a lot of sense. But I think for those of us who carry a little more gear, the little amount that a small camper can carry makes a big difference. Even when it comes to just offsetting the weight. Until I took that trip through the San Rafael swell this summer, I never was a believer in towing a trailer off-road. It definitely had me changing my tune a bit.

I like your thoughts here. The big one for me is longevity. Typically the real tow behind home is just not going to hold up like these campers. Plus they’re going to require a lot more maintenance and I find often times that the layouts aren’t very good inside. Many of us would rather use these campers for storage and a convenient comfortable place to sleep at night, but spend the rest of our time outdoors. I think like you said pairing, a built out tow vehicle with a built out small camper Trailer is the best option for many of us.

That’s how I felt as well. I also like the idea, if you need that trip it stays if you don’t leave it at home. Same goes with what to buy. Use it paired down and if you don’t need it, don’t get it. If the need arises, it’s a simple as bolting it on.

$14,000??? Base price! You can get other trailers of quality cheaper. It’s a shame that before covid and the teardrop boom, you could get this base trailer for $6000 total. I have to wait for the used trailer boom cause I’ve been priced out of these things. Have a towing hitch still in the box in my garage.

I hear you. It’s been painful watching these prices practically double. Just to make sure there’s no misunderstandings. If anyone reads this post the base price is still $12,500. Like you said, I think there will be a pretty big surge of used trailers on the market. I continue to hear about big price slashes as well on overstock trailers. Somebody just told me yesterday that the beway camoees are about 50% off right now. I haven’t checked to confirm the pricing yet though.

Quick release can be nice but if you leave the trailer, quick release can be problematic due to theft! So a quick release design requires a design for security as well.
