A small visual detail that even if you don't have the Intel it can tip you off to something not being right is the fact he's wearing tactical pants and combat boots(and a leather jacket) which Menendez never wears any sort of military uniform or tactical gear up until the end where he tries to escape while disguised as a SEAL

It's still hard to tell which is canon. In both scenes mason is lying in a pool of blood (even when he's shot in the leg) But if you look in the prologue cutscene for bo2 mason has not been shot in the face
