Nice install and a tip for all your viewers. While the tank is off lubricate the linkage underneath or the water that sits under there will eventually rust and create problems. Jake at Eliminator Performance just did a 1450 to 1350 engine swap and upgrade showing this along with a governor spring tip that also eliminates future problems.

Why all the shrouds on a snowblower engine - A couple of reasons: 1. Part of the shrouding serves as a "furnace" to feed warmed air into the carb. This is to prevent icing in the carb and to a lesser extent to maintain a relatively consistent air/fuel ratio for proper combustion. Air density changes with temperature. 2. They allow the engine to warm to a temperature that is optimum for proper lubrication and friction reduction. 3. They allow the engine to warm evenly so that it attains and maintains the designed shape to reduce friction in the cylinder as well as maintaining bearing alignments. Something to consider when installing box store engines on a snow blower that operates in very cold weather.

I discovered this a few years ago...embarassing to admit how many machines passed through me before I made the same observation. Briggs carbs are some the of the most expensive on the market compared to other brands. Why they didn't want to spend $1 extra on each engine is mind blowing. I just install them automatically on each machine that comes through here.

I always run my snow thrower dry after using it but I wasn't aware that choking it before it shut down would draw more fuel out. My thrower is about thirteen years old, and I've never had carburetor issues with it. Last year I replaced the carburetor on a friend's snow thrower that was only a few years old because they never let it run dry after using it. Both machines are equipped with fuel shut off valves. I have never used a fuel stabilizer in any of my power equipment.

Whenever I have a reason to take off a fuel tank I always use the opportunity to rinse it out with some carb cleaner to remove sediments. I almost always get some. In my local area there are earwigs that climb in there and die. They mostly dissolve except parts of their exoskeleton which are big enough to clog a carb.

I bought a New Cub Cadet Blower in Jan 2022. Being smart, I installed my shut off valve before I put any gas in the tank. I found a Great Deal on Amazon for a 5 pack of "Straight Inline Valves!" I bought extra gas line, and routed it outside the casing by cutting holes. It looked brutal, took me a long time, but l was pleased, until I filled up the new gas tank. Shortly after... my garage floor was flooded with gas! Leaky Valve precisely & exactly as you warned! What a mess! Then, I spent much more time removing the leaky valve, and installing more new fuel line. Thank you Dony! I'll do this again, with the Correct Valve! 😀

It seems odd that some manufacturers would have knockout and not install the fuel shut-off valve. At least they make installing one easier. I have made the habit of always shutting it off and running the carburetor dry. I'm also using Regular E0 now, but I think it's still a good habit. If a small engine device doesn't have one, but there's room for one, I install it. They are cheap enough so why not? Gasoline doesn't stay good forever, maybe a year, so the shut-off is still preventing potential damage. Draining the gas tank is also a very good idea if you don't know how long the device may be sitting unused. The shut-off keeps the tank from draining until you have the fuel line off the carb and in or over the container. Great video, Don! Thanks

On running Tank/Carb Dry, end of season - I also have a can of starting fluid ready and as the tank goes dry, the engine starts shutting down I spray a shot of ether. Engine picks back up, starts to die, I spray again, just to keep it going for 5 or 6 sprays. Hoping that gets everything out. Appreciate the idea to turn the choke to suck the last of the fuel, never thought of that. You are the [Engine] Doctor!

Finally glad to see that someone else in Ontario is doing it too. I try to put one in every machine that comes to my shop. At the end I think I heard you say to use this at the end of season. I advise it after EVERY SINGLE snow blowing session. That way the carburetor will never go bad, ever. On some of the newer Briggs engines, the hole in the plates is so narrow that the Rotary USA or other fuel cut out does not pass through. I have used a round file.

Curious if it’s even less likely to leak by spending extra for a metal shutoff? I have a 20 year old Craftsman with a 8HP B&S engine and no shutoff. I have never had any carb issues despite using ethanol fuel. I do run it every week in season to keep the fuel moving and always run it out of gas for storage in Summer. I cleaned the carb bowl and replaced the fuel line last year just as a precaution. Hate the idea of cutting a relatively new and overpriced formed fuel line from B&S and installing a plastic Oregon valve if there is even a slim chance of leaking. Is metal any better?

@edwintaber6465
@edwintaber6465 2 жыл бұрын
Engines without throttles are designed to operate at the optimum speed that gives the highest power. Engines have a power curve - they do not put out the same power at all speeds. This is best for the non-mechanical market.

@@edwintaber6465 yes, I understand how governors work. I just find it painful that this engine goes to full operating speed immediately on cold start up, and also that I cannot throttle it down after use to allow it to cool gradually before shutting it off.
