Totally flabbergasted by the price difference there - I don't know what Heinz are playing at charging £1.40 for a basic can of soup! Tinned beans, pasta & soup shouldn't be some kind of luxury aspirational cuisine. 5 meals for the price of 1! I can see stores like ASDA keeping people alive through this current crisis and they score big points with me for this. 👍👍👍

I cannot justify paying what Heinz are charging for a basic can of soup! I usually buy Sainsbury's own brand classic vegetable soup for 55p. It has really chunky veg and tastes lovely! Far nicer than the overpriced Heinz! People are paying for the brand name here and some will never change. My sister only eats Heinz baked beans. She says she can tell the difference between Heinz and a cheap brand. I served her Sainsbury's own brand beans on toast, saying they were Heinz, and she happily ate them! I told her afterwards and she was quite shocked as she has always equated cost with quality and taste. I think years ago, this may have been the case but not any more. Thanks BFG for these comparisons and showing that cheap isn't always nasty!

Its r!d!culous! Probably cheaper to make your own as you can make way more and freeze it! My gran used to work for mrs heinz, she lived in her mansion in okehampton in Devon about 20 years ago or less looking after the home and the parrot 🦜. I went a couple of times as a teen but not like they need the money being rich as it is so they could make it cheaper 😂😂😂

@@nooshiewest8738 I do think higher cost equates to higher quality with some products, but Heinz products on the whole are no better than supermarket brands or other brands, and I don’t think brand name alone is a marker of quality. Branston beans are a lot more expensive than own brands but I do at least think that their baked beans are superior to most, as you really can tell the difference - the sauce is thicker and richer. Heinz beans are watery and nondescript. I think the more expensive cheeses and breads at Asda and the like *are* nicer than the budget ones, but they’re still a lot cheaper than the branded ones. With Heinz you’re paying for the name and their ludicrous advertising budget. There is nothing high quality about Heinz whatsoever - it’s just exploiting people with restrictive palates or who are stuck in their ways.

I love them too, but you describing veg soup as having "tomato sauce" is hilarious! 🤣🤣 EDIT: Would love to see you do some comparisons with LIDL foods if you have one near you. In Northern Ireland here, many people are moving from Tesco/Sainsbury/Asda to shop in LIDL's. I have tried some things from LIDL and I have to say, the quality is spot on, and at least 40% cheaper!

Another huge price difference. In these days of rising fuel bills every penny or in this case pound saved helps. If you give your kids a nice warm bowl of veg soup on a cold winter's day they won't notice any difference especially if you pop some grated cheese on top. I am 37 years old now, but when I was 20, Red bull energy drink was the "big thing". I worked in Tesco at the time, and a 250ml tin of Red Bull cost £1.10 in Tesco, yet Tesco done it's own version of Red bull called "Tesco Kick". You could get 1Litre of Tesco kick for £1.00 (4 times as much drink, and cheaper). We sold out of Tesco kick on a Friday night as it tasted EXACTLY the same as Red bull, just a little less sweet. One day, I took the delivery from Red bull to our store from Red bull themselves, and they also delivered Tesco kick. Red Bull made it for Tesco it turned out, yet at 4X less the price! People need to waken up to brand names as they are brain-washed! 99% of the "tastier" brand names, is due to extra salt or sugar! Just add a little more salt or sugar yourself, and save a fortune!!!

The big brands have been living off their names for years. I woke up to it when Netto opened a branch in my town, Their 'La Campagna' beans were 9p per can and they were lovely, so Heinz got ditched. Now we have Aldi and Lidl which has started a bit of a price war. The big supermarkets have finally woken up too. Now, various products are cheap enough to give them a try and if you don't like them, you haven't shelled out a fortune, so it doesn't hurt the pocket. Your comparison videos are brill. Just think, if you needed gravy granules and soup, just by buying those two Essential products from Asda you would have saved about £3 just to try them out, and if you liked them, then hey, you're a winner!

Another great review Gareth, loved this. It makes me wonder for the future of the over priced branded products in these hard times. If all we switch to the cheaper brands of similar or same quality will the branded manufacturers reduce their pricing to get us back to them in the future? More of this please and keep up your excellent work pal. All the best to you and yours.

Always love your videos. You made me laugh with the 'Asdas' remark. It is something I notice many people say and it's so easy to do. I used to swear by Heinz veg soup and their sausage and beans. Heinz are ridiculously overpriced for basically an inferior product. You got me onto Aldi sausage and beans which are a fraction of the cost and much better, thank you! Veg soup is different. One of the reasons I used to eat it is because it's convenient and I thought I was getting a health benefit. It's not true with any of them no matter the cost. I gave up and now always make a large batch with fresh vegetables. I dont use tomatoes or pasta in mine, just a few potatoes. I freeze it down and get 30 good sized portions. It takes an hour or so to cook on the hob and all you need is one or 2 large pots and a hand blender. Yes it's a bit of work, but it works out as cheap as the basic brands and the quality is on another level. I only have to make it once every couple of months.

When I was growing up there was less choice in tinned basic foods. Baked beans were Heinz. We didn't have a supermarket nearby either. By the time I was an adult & feeding kids I had a choice of supermarkets (Tesco, Kwiksave & Safeways) and a traditional market with stalls. I had a limited budget and I don't think I've bought Heinz since the 1980s.

Can't comment on the soups but some of Asda's own brand products are great. I regularly use their own brand non-bio laundry tablets (as good as Persil and pounds cheaper), their biscuits e.g. custard creams and Nice are fine for around 50p and their packs of paracetamol for 29p are unbeatable value.

I was sceptical about the rebrand for Asda's just essentials as I rarely used to try these... thanks to Bald Foodie Guy I recently gave it another try and for staple foods, you are literally paying less for the same product. Sainsbury's and Tesco's value brands cant even compare to quality/price of Asda at the moment in my opinion.

Worked in a frozen food factory years back, when the line had to be changed it was for the packaging, identical product. Them soups are clearly different, but cheaper stuff is most often exactly the same product. ASDA, ALDI, LIDL, wherever is the cheapest for things for like frozen veg, go there. It's all the same stuff

Id say try to do a blind taste test before you start to deconstruct the products. That way you wont be influenced at all by the products you taste. I'd even say put a 3rd in there to keep it random. Maybe Waitrose orM&S as a 3rd 'upper tier' option to see what is really worth the price. The Brand, the upper class version, and the 'cheap' one. Loved the video, looking forward to more.

I guess that's what the essential idea means. Add a bit of garlic (makes nearly everything better 🤣) or put some bacon in a pan and fry it with half an onion and add it to the soup. Or try 2 Frankfurters. Ok, it's no longer vegetarian but so aren't most customers, I love to add some hot red sauce to give it a bit of Asian taste - so many things to try, and it will still be less expensive than the plain brand version without anything.

Thought the salt/sugar content would have been the other way round. I bought Heinz but usually only when its on offer so much less than £1.40 a tin which seems very expensive for what it is. A lot of them are loss leaders. Buying the essentials range it's possible to do an entire shop and Asda would have been better off you not even entering the store 🤣. You just have to know what to buy. They're hoping they can entice you in and then buy other things that have a high markup on them.
