Full Episode: • The Holiness of God, P...
Matt asks Dr. Hahn a persistent question in Catholic-Protestant apologetics: are we save by faith alone, or by works and faith. Dr. Hahn explains how the biblical Catholic answer is a little more interesting than one way or the other.

Christ be with you I am sorry I don't think people know what faith is. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Abel's hope was to be approved by God and so he provides God with a sacrifice of his best, his first fruits. This assured he would gain approval. (Heb 11:4) Faith alone gain gods approval. Enoch's hope was to please God, so he made a testimony of his life that assured this. (Heb 11:5) Faith alone would not have pleased God Noah's hope was his family would survive the flood God told him would come, so he obeyed God and built the Ark. (Heb 11:7) Faith alone would not have saved Noah's family. Abraham's hope was to receive the inheritance promised by God, so he went out into the world (Heb 11:8) Our Hope is that we will receive eternal life and we do that by living according to the teaching and commandments of Jesus Christ. Please read the bible Jesus links so much our eternal life, not least which is eating his flesh and drinking his blood (John 6:53-57) But it also includes simple works like helping the poor the sick the stranger and the imprisoned. (Matt 25:31-46) We are not saved by Faith; we are saved by Grace. We are not justified by Faith alone but a faith the upholds God Law (Rom 3:31) For it is those who keep the law who will be justified. (Rom 2:13) Faith alone will save no one. @@RomGabe Christ be with you *you say* Wrong again. Where do you find that in Scripture? It is Sola Fide, Eph. 2:8-10 *response* Let me know if you want to mock God some more and I can provide more verses Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. (Gal 6:7-9) Protestants qoute Eph 2:8-10 over and over because they do not know what faith is or how we are saved. Faith must up hold the Law (Rom 3:31) Those who keep the Law will be justified (Rom 2:13) What Ephesians is telling us is that it is Grace that saves us, God's forgiveness for our sin. Not that our faith doesn't have work but just the are not the reason we can enter heaven for with out Christ's sacrifice on the cross would never get in no matter how much we do, But he will give this gift of eternal life to those who obey him. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, (Heb :5:8-9) or do you just not believe all scripture come to Christ

Another formula for salvation that I commonly hear taught in the Catholic Church is something like this: Initially justified by faith in Baptism, Saved by Grace, and Sanctified through Cooperation with the Spirit/Works

By faith alone, but if you have faith it will show up works. If faith doesn't show up as works, it is dead. The issue is not ' either, or' and not ' both'. James nails this controversy in his Epistle, Chapter 2: 14- 25. Faith precedes works, and hence we are saved by Faith which is demonstrated in our works. There can be works without faith as most secular groups demonstrate. But this is not what the Lord wants.

Faith is not some ephemeral head assent, but a preparedness to take action and risks in following Jesus. Hebrews chapter 11 gives us heaps of examples.
@KnuttyEntertainment
@KnuttyEntertainment Жыл бұрын
Faith is an adverb, it’s a principle of action. How can you say one is confident, if they have never done anything confidently? (And coincidentally, confidence comes from con-fide, or “with faith” in Latin.) Faith cannot exist without works because works is the context in which faith exists. It is like saying you are sustained by food apart from eating. Imagine someone says, “behold, we know that we cannot be sustained with our own power, for we are vicarious and rely wholly on the grace of nature to provide us with food. Let no man say he has survived by his own will, for will cannot provide a man a single calorie.” And then someone takes that obvious and clearly apparent passage to say that they can survive without eating, because the will to eat cannot increase the portion size of the food in front of him, and that the food alone is sufficient to sustain them. That is the exact opposite of what the passage was saying. By trying to follow the passage, you have ended up falling into the very pitfall described of trying to survive off their own will alone. And thus we arrive at another of the glorious paradoxes of the gospel. Just as he who will lose his life will find it, we see also that the only work that neither requires nor builds faith, is the dissonant work of blind faith itself.

@@LostbutnowFound First things first, the work being referred to in Romans 4:5 is circumcision. The verse does not say that one cannot be justified by any kinds of works at all. In fact it actually says that the work of believing is counted for righteousness. When someone has faith and is faithful, it means that they have a consistent track record of working faithfully, acting with full confidence in their beliefs. Abraham had a long track record of works, wherein he continued to believe in God’s promise for his whole life despite the hardships he had to endure to continue believing, that long track record is illustrated in verses 17-21. And then the very next verse says that this long track record is the exact reason why his faith was counted counted to him as righteousness in verse 5. Meaning that if Abraham did not do the things in verses 17-21, and had instead despaired and begun to doubt God’s promise and turned away from God, then Abraham’s faith wouldn’t have been counted as righteousness, because he wouldn’t have done anything faithfully. Not to mention all the other times the Bible says Abraham is credited or justified by his works, like in James 2:21. I heavily suggest this video which goes very in-depth on Romans 4. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYqmnKhrhdKbeas

At 0:45, Scott Hahn implies that Martin Luther used the analogy that faith alone is like a dunghill covered with snow. I am unable to find where Martin Luther said such a thing. However, it is documented that Martin Luther (and other Reformers) said that we are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone.” We should all be cautious to avoid strawmen arguments by using very dubious quotes of others. If you read the writings of the Reformed and the Westminster Confession of Faith, you will find that the concept of salvation by faith alone does not mean what a lot of evangelical claim today - i.e., you just have to believe but do not have to have good works or bear fruit. The Reformers taught that it was through faith alone that one enters into the Kingdom of God (or is saved), but genuine faith in Christ necessarily results in the believer doing good works and bearing good fruit. However, the works and the fruit do not contribute to the salvation of that person.

@wenshan9101

In 1999, a milestone aggreement was reached by the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation. Paragraph 15 reads: 15. In faith we together hold the conviction that justification is the work of the triune God. The Father sent his Son into the world to save sinners. The foundation and presupposition of justification is the incarnation, death, and resurrection of Christ. Justification thus means that Christ himself is our righteousness, in which we share through the Holy Spirit in accord with the will of the Father. Together we confess: By grace alone, in faith in Christ’s saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping and calling us to good works. Looks like except for Luther's oversimplication of the Doctrine of Justification (without downplaying intent) we have anathemised each other for reasons other than a fidelity to Christ. This is the strongest test we shall face moving towards a common communion.

@ansbnansn Read the entire chapter. Paul is not making a case for works in general, but specifically, works of the law. He gives the example of Abraham being justified 'uncircumcised'. Catholics do not refute this in initial justification. The question facing every christian is whether we are saved without sanctification through works of love, good works. Paul in 1 Cor 13:2, "And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing." James 2:22-24 substantiates: "You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works. Thus, the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called “the friend of God.” See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone."

@@Joseph-nr3lb 1 Corinth. 13:13 tells us: 'And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.' How then can only faith save and justify, while being inferior to charity? The analogy given at the end of James 2, makes it clear, a body without the spirit is dead, that is, a dead body, likewise faith without works is dead, that is a dead faith. Not no faith; a dead faith, not no body; a dead body. Therefore, faith and charity are two distinct virtues that are required for salvation. '...if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.' (1 Corinth. 13:2). The guy next to our Saviour on the cross had no possible way to do any good works other than the humility and repentance he showed at the moment of his death. This is the mercy of God, and why we should never despair, even at the hour of death. That verse is not addressing specifically how we should live as Christians.

Sola Fide / Faith Alone is Scriptural and biblical and historical. Some Fathers on Sola Fide: "Similarly we also, who by His will have been called in Christ Jesus, are not justified by ourselves, or our own wisdom or understanding or godliness, nor by such deeds as we have done in holiness of heart, but by that faith through which Almighty God has justified all men since the beginning of time. Glory be to Him, forever and ever, Amen." - St. Clement of Rome (Letter to the Corinthians, par. 32) "Human beings can be saved from the ancient serpent in no other way than by believing in him who, when he was raised up from the earth on the tree of martyrdom in the likeness of sinful flesh, drew all things to himself and gave life to the dead." - Irenaeus (Against the Heresies, IV, 2, 7). "Indeed, this is the perfect and complete glorification of God, when one does not exult in his own righteousness, but recognizing oneself as lacking true righteousness to be justified by faith alone in Christ." - St. Basil the Great (Homily on Humility, PG 31.532; TFoTC vol. 9, p. 479) "They said that he who adhered to faith alone was cursed; but he, Paul, shows that he who adhered to faith alone is blessed." - St. John Chrysostom (First Corinthians, Homily 20, PG 61.164) "For you believe the faith; why then do you add other things, as if faith were not sufficient to justify? You make yourselves captive, and you subject yourself to the law." - St. John Chrysostom (Epistle to Titus, Homily 3, PG 62.651) "To declare His righteousness." What is declaring of righteousness? Like the declaring of His riches, not only for Him to be rich Himself, but also to make others rich, or of life, not only that He is Himself living, but also that He makes the dead to live; and of His power, not only that He is Himself powerful, but also that He makes the feeble powerful. So also is the declaring of His righteousness not only that He is Himself righteous, but that He doth also make them that are filled with the putrefying sores (katasapentaj) of sin suddenly righteous. And it is to explain this, viz. what is "declaring," that he has added, "That He might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." Doubt not then: for it is not of works, but of faith: and shun not the righteousness of God, for it is a blessing in two ways; because it is easy, and also open to all men. And be not abashed and shamefaced. For if He Himself openly declareth (endeiknutai) Himself to do so, and He, so to say, findeth a delight and a pride therein, how comest thou to be dejected and to hide thy face at what thy Master glorieth in? - St. John Chrysostom (Homilies on Romans 3)

Go to your priest. But I'll still add as a Lutheran, the Absolution is Christ's Word through the priest to you, listen to Him. If He says your sin/guilt is forgiven/removed from you then it is (His Word Works), you are free to no longer live contrary to Christ. Now one either has faith/trust in His Word and Work or not. Listen to 1 John 1 and hear, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." St John inspired by the Holy Spirit does not lie, we should not blasphemy the Holy Spirit by rejecting His Scripture and Absolution through the priest as lies. Those who trust Christ and the Holy Spirit at their Words of Absolution/Forgiveness have a new life free to not sin, and free to live in conformity in Christ. To put it crassly, those who trust Christ's Word are free to do truly good works; those who reject the Holy Spirit's Absolution through the priest are condemned to hell. Or more simply, go to your priest, go to Confession, go to the Most Holy Communion, and rely on God's mercy which He has promised you in Holy Baptism. Don't listen to the lies the devil shoots into your mind, call him out for the pathetic liar that devil is. (I have it on good authority that the 'evil spirit' can't abide 'bad wind') PS. Christ is the one who saves, don't look inside to your faith rather look to Christ's Most Holy Body and Blood which He has given you to receive tangibly in your mouth (something you cannot deny) and rely on His promise therein.

Scripture says Jesus paid the price once for all time, and there remains no additional sacrifice for sins. Baptism in itself does not save, especially if it only “saves” one from previous sins such that one has to continue to sacrifice something/someone every time one sins. Faith is enough. Ephesians tells us we are saved unto good works prepared beforehand. We are not saved only after good works. We are saved before good works occur. I think this is a misrepresentation of Lutheranism, from the formula of concord: But after man has been justified by faith, then a true living faith worketh by love, Gal. 5:6, so that thus good works always follow justifying faith, and are surely found with it, if it be true and living; for it never is alone, but always has with it love and hope. We are justified by faith alone, but true faith necessarily produces fruit. In that sense works are necessary, but they are not the source of justification.

As a protestant, I agree with much of this, except the part where it's implied this is a Catholic position. That is not the historic Catholic position. You are co-opting (perhaps this is a good thing, nonetheless) a form of evangelicalism (usually, but not always, a Calvinist form, ie. I am not a Calvinist). You would be hard pressed to find a Catholic on the street that would express this opinion. Here's the historic Catholic position I've always heard form Catholics: "Canon 24. If anyone says that justice received is not preserved and also not increased before God through good works, but that those works are merely fruits and signs of justification obtained, not the cause of its increase, let him be anathema."

This question made me think of Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God." There are three nouns in the first sentence salvation (saved), grace and faith yet the singular pronoun "it." Of the three nouns, which does "it" refer to? salvation, grace or faith? This is an honest question; I'm not trolling. I think grace is the free gift. Faith and works are our responses to grace resulting in salvation.

Good Works are simply a reflection of our faith in Christ Jesus. If your faith in Christ Jesus doesn't have a reflection of good works then your faith is dead. Do not focus on good works to be saved but rather focused on faith to be saved and your good works will become the reflection of that salvation.

We are saved by faith but how does one know their faith is genuine? Through works. Faith without works is dead because if you genuinely believed that God died for your sins then you would act like it. You would follow God’s commands (imperfectly, but trying) out of your reverence of him. Works are a symptom of true faith without works your faith is dead. These are my thoughts on salvation, would you guys say it’s biblically grounded or am I missing the mark?

here are some verses to prove that faith alone saves, NOT WORKS Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” Romans 4:1-5 “What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” John 6:40 “And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:47 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” John 6:29 “Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” John 3:14-17 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” ‭ ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2‬:‭16‬ “knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” Galatians‬ ‭2‬:‭21‬ “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”

Titus3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Philippians 3:9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith. Romans1:17 For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “ The righteous will live by faith.” Romans 4:5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, Romans 4:6 And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him… Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus Romans 8:39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. John3:15-17 that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.… John6:47 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. colossians1:20 and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross. psalm103:10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins or repaid us according to our iniquities. psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 2 corrin 5:19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.

The core gigantic problem with works being part of soteriology is - scales or not - there is no orthodox Christian answer to how many and how much and what kind are needed in order to ensure justification has happened. This human instinct to misunderstand the meaning of works in the NT leads to the scales of Islam or the karma of Buddhism. The scandal of grace is that the true God's true salvation requires no such measurement, whatever good works may be defined as.

@@Christine-vt5fi If I may? All of Romans 2 discuss salvation based on our works/deeds via obedience. Revelations 20:11 as well. There's another verse in Revelation I posted somewhere that says that your "works that saves" is the works of grace and obedience "not" of debt (Christ solved thus issue). In other words, the works that save you are NOT of earning your sacrifice. The works that save are from obeying his commands. Reference Romans 2. - Not meant for discussion (unless you'd like?) I just thought these and other verses are very clearcut that works (not works to pay off debt) are important to your salvation.

The Gospel tells us that those who believe and trust in Christ's redemptive work on the cross are indeed saved by grace (1 Cor 15: 1-4) and are thus Justified (saved). This is swiftly followed by Sanctification whereby the Holy Spirit dwells within us, guiding our daily walk with Christ for the rest of our lives and yes, we will stumble but God never forsakes us, we are never 'de-justified'. Works are the fruit of our faith (Eph 2:10) never the meritorious basis of our salvation. It is an incredible free gift and one that God wants us to know we can be assured of (1 John 5:13; 1 Thess 1:5; Ephesians 1: 12-13). Finally, after we die, we will receive our Glorified bodies in heaven, as God promised.

It seems like the misunderstanding is that Catholics believe their good works are outside of the law and non-catholics believe their good works are not outside of the law. The law includes loving God and loving your neighbor so I don't see how any good work is outside of the law when the law is to love. I am either loving or not loving in the things I do. For that reason all the typical scriptures non-Catholics use do indeed apply to no good works required for salvation. Only belief (faith) as we see so many times in the Bible, especially in the Gospel of John. Grace is apart from works (Romans) and faith is apart from works (Ephesians). Abraham was justified by faith apart from works (apart from doing anything). Our doings only demonstrate we have faith and aren't belief itself. For example, I wouldn't jump out of an airplane to sky dive if I didn't have faith first in the equipment and in the crew before I jumped. I'm really honestly looking for what the underlying misunderstanding is. Why is it Catholics and Non-Catholics see this faith and works issue differently.

Works are made good by the merits of Christ, our Lord, so that the works of men may become acceptable to the eternal Father. But those who neglect good works and rely soley on faith can by no means expect to apply to themselves the good works of Christ; for they have in themselves nothing that can be perfected by the works of Christ, but only such things as deserve condemnation.
@MrMurfle

All this faith and works talk clouds the issue. You're saved by being known by Jesus as a servant-friend of His. You're a servant-friend if your heart intent is to do what he says, to live in a manner akin to the way He lived, and to actively aspire to attain to His character. Of course, you have to cash that out according to the biblical data, keeping in mind He said you must live on EVERY WORD of God (not just the red letters, though that will get you pretty far). I doubt pleading ignorance will cut it when you haven't even sincerely tried to learn what that entails, internalize it and instantiate it (at least, I'd say, as assiduously as you pursue your secular work, hobbies, recreations, etc.). I'm not saying it's easy, but it's necessary if you want to enter into eternal life. And the cool thing is it brings joy and contentment such that you needn't be concerned with trying to suss out all these theological fine points. The sad part though, based on my observation, is that it appears very few really are finding the narrow path to the Kingdom.

When the carnal fleshy mind cannot understand something, it then makes things up to satisfy its desire for understanding. This is what is happening here, because the speaker does not understand what Faith and Works really is. In fact, most of the church system does not understand Faith and Works. I cannot wait for God to start teaching them. Faith means to “Hear the voice of God.” The examples given in Hebrews chapter 11 are all examples of a person hearing God speak to them, 19 examples to be exact. The number 19 in scripture means “Faith”. An example would be in Hebrews 11:17, when scripture tells us that Abraham offered up his son Isaac by Faith. This is because Abraham heard God tell him to do so. The book of James is about being “Obedient”. The same example of Abraham is given in James 2:21, but now scripture is showing how Abraham was justified by “Works”. Works means “to obey God”. If God tells you to do something, and you do it, then you are doing your “Works”, you are being obedient. Hebrews 11 is all about hearing, James 2 is all about obeying, both must go hand in hand. In order to be obedient one must first Hear, so what we are seeing is that Abraham first Heard God tell him to sacrifice his son, and then in James we see how Abraham obeyed God thus perfecting his Faith. We must first have Faith before we can have Works. But in order to perfect our hearing we must obey, for if we do not obey, then our hearing is dead. But if we obey, then we are justified in the eyes of God. James 1:22 says “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves”. Most today cannot hear God. Why? Because it was prophesied in scripture that we would not be able to hear God, for Amos 8:11 says “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:” Jesus was our example, for He was obedient unto death. Much of Paul’s writings are about hearing God and it is assumed that you are also being obedient, because Faith is not Faith unless Obedience is involved. This is the New Covenant law, the Law of Faith (Romans 3:27). If you hear God and obey Him, then you are following the law of God and this is how righteousness is imputed towards you. Most cases where the scriptures use the word “Believe”, the word should actually be translated as Faith. Because of the mistranslations into English this whole point in scripture has not been understood. If God speaks to someone and gives them revelation through the spirit, only then is scripture translated in its proper form. Most today do not have Faith, they have a belief. But a time is coming in which all will have Faith. Blessings

In addition to James, Paul himself, the parable of the sheep and the goats, there is Matthew 16:27: "For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done." In view of all the above, it smacks of bad faith for Protestants to try to say that James's "NOT by faith alone" is compatible with its opposite, "by faith alone." The more I read, the more I'm convinced that Protestants try to out-Jesuit the Jesuits' Jesuitry.

(A) GRACE corresponds to the monarchy of The Father who is without origin and the source of all divinity in the One God; (B) FAITH corresponds to The Son who proceeds from The Father, since it is the revelation of God's Incarnate Son that is the object of belief; and (C) 'AGAPE' corresponds to The Holy Spirit who Pope (Saint) Paul VI taught, in his Motu Proprio of June 30, 1968, The Credo of the People of God, is "the uncreated Person who proceeds from the Father and the Son as their eternal love." [newadvent online, library, docs_pa06cr.htm] 4. Therefore, wouldn't we be saved by (A) GRACE, (B) FAITH and (C) 'AGAPE'? 5. 'When the Pharisees heard that He [Jesus] had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them [a scholar of the law] tested Him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”' [Gospel of Matthew 22:34-40]

So then Catholics DO have assurance of salvation? If I’m Catholic, can I believe this from the Bible?: “”If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.“ ‭‭Romans‬ ‭10‬:‭9‬

. When it is written in scripture that works can not save you Paul is talking about the MOSAIC LAW. If you reject Jesus and keep the works of the law you can not be saved. This is absolutely True. But, in many areas of scripture it is clear that works are vital to your being saved. 'be gone from me I don't know you '(talking about the works of Mercy) ring a bell and other scripture that tells us faith without (good) works is dead. Jesus sacrifice and resurrections because He lived a Pure and Sinless life (which proves we can also but don't. Jesus never sinned even with all they threw at Him) OPENED the Gates of heaven to us but we must labor too keep our salvation. YOU MUST confess your sins that you do or fail to do to regain forgiveness.

I think you Catholics misunderstand protestants, Luther especially, on what we mean by faith alone. Luther constantly emphasised that saving faith by its very nature, creates good works. We do not define faith is simply belief, it is a trusting in God's promises and acting on that trust. When James says 'faith without works is dead' he means that true faith is always followed by works, and if there are no works, there is no faith.

I am surprised to hear this false teaching coming from a Catholic let alone a Scott Hann. What is going on. Come to Christ

That is not accurate to the analogy given by St. James. The verse is: 'For even as the body without the spirit is dead: so also faith without works is dead.' (James, c. 2,). The body still exists, it is just dead (Rheims New Testament, James, c. 2, Annot. 1582 AD.). Likewise, faith can exist without works, it's just dead (c. 2). But it is a great difference, to say faith without works is dead, and to say faith without works is no faith. (c. 2). This is the error of Luther. The Catholic faith is as defined by Hebrews 11 and must be made alive by charity to save (c. 2). Faith does not make works/charity alive; charity make faith alive, and thus is perfectly in line with St. James (c.2).
@theodorebe
@theodorebe Жыл бұрын
@@handsomegiraffe You have the verse right but the analogy/application wrong. I'd say you need to reverse the analogy in order to apply it like that. Of course "faith without works is dead", but the analogy would be *works without faith is dead* because it is the Spirit that livens the body (otherwise the physical body is a dead body), and it is the Faith that livens the work (otherwise the physical work is dead work). Faith works through love (Galatians 5:6). Faith is the subject, the source of life. Love/charity/etc is the natural/supernatural expression/manifestation/fruition of genuine Faith. Likewise, with a tree, if there is no eventual fruit, the tree is dead. The fruit of the tree is love/works/charity. The life of the tree is Faith.
@handsomegiraffe
@handsomegiraffe Жыл бұрын
@@theodorebe No, you have the analogy wrong. In the analogy, body is analogous to faith and spirit to works. This is plain in the text. The spirit cannot die because the spirit is immortal, so it must be the body. Faith without works is a dead faith, not a dead works. I don't know how you can misunderstand this unless you are beholden to a theory or a specific interpretation.

I'm pretty sure Dr. Scott Hahn understands the basics of how salvation works in Catholicism however, he comes across as very Protestant and not very Catholic in this clip. James 2:26 states: 'For even as the body without the spirit is dead: so also faith without works is dead.' A body without a spirit is dead, the body still exists without the spirit, it is just dead. To be consistent with St. James' analogy we must accept that faith can exist without works, however it is dead. The Catholic faith is as defined by Hebrews 11:1 and must be made alive by charity to save (Rheims New Testament, James, c. 2, Annot., 1582 AD).

Salvation is dependent on what you do. Whether you want to believe you are saved by obeying god first that which produces faith or obeying god after you have faith. Without works, there is no eternal life. 2 Corinthians 5:10; (NKJV); Revelation 20:12. Not just in James. You are literally not saved without works. James 2:18 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith BY my works. Not the other way around. (i.e. Works by faith)

@@jlouis4407 Yes. It's supposed to be works and faith rather than works from faith in regards to salvation. If it were the latter, we would be judged by our faith. Which is different than saying you saved because of what you want to do for god.

I think when the Bible talks about, we are not saved by works. Meaning if you do something good and help other people but you still have sin in your heart and you still live in sin. Then you are not saved by those works. We are saved by faith and following Jesus's teachings. Jesus said in John 15:10 "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in His love." KJV. Which requires faith and some type of works.

@@LostbutnowFound I'm not trusting in myself. I'm trusting in Jesus teachings and we are saved by Jesus blood from sin. Are you calling Jesus wrong? Because Jesus said plenty of times to repent of your sins Mark 1:15, Matthew 4:17, John 15:10, Luke 24:47. It also says to repent in Acts 2:38, Acts 3:19, Acts 17:30, Acts 20:21, Acts 26:20. I'm sure there is more verses on repentance. That means to turn away from your sins. Jesus blood saved us from sin. We just have to believe, ask for forgiveness for our sins and turn away from our sins. which is called repentance. If Jesus never wanted us to repent, then Jesus would of never mentioned it. Jesus didn't die on the cross so we can live in sin. Jesus died for us so we can be free from sin. Jesus died for our sins. So we can ask for forgiveness from Jesus and turn away from our sins. Through Jesus Christ our sins are forgiven. I do trust in Jesus blood that's what saves me from sin.

Faith is NOT a checkbox like "yeah I believe in Jesus." Remember, if you love Him you OBEY His commandments and gospels. So it is an "active faith." Also remember the parable of a rich young man? asking how to go to Heaven? then Jesus enumerated most of the Commandments? So it is not a check box that by believing you are saved. 👍

Read James 1:1. That explains who James is writing to. Hebrews. The 12 tribes of Israel who will be going through the Tribulation were they will have to work for their salvation. Because we know that Romans 10:12 says, “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.” So why would James make a distinction? James is not writing to Church Age Christians. How do we know this? Because of Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the GIFT of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” This is what Timothy means in 2 Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, RIGHTLY dividing the word of truth.”

the n.t. says at least 5 times that salvation is by faith alone, not works. it says that faith without works is dead, and this means real good works are the result of salvation, not the cause of it. the roman catholic divisions of sins is not established in the bible. all sin is forgivable, except blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

actually the division of sin (i'm assuming you mean mortal vs. venial), is in the N.T. 1 John 5 says there is sin that leads to death (mortal) and sin that does not (venial). However, 1 John does not say which sin falls in which category. The Church defines mortal sin by three things 1) Grave matter (think Galatians 5 or a violation of the 10 commandments) 2) knowledge that the sin meets condition 1 and 3) meets condition 1 and 2 and is done with full consent of the will.
