I am having the same problem, I need a new base and spent several days phoning round and looking on the internet. I am going to email my contact at Savic to see if they can help as all the UK suppliers say that they have not been able to get any bases for a while. I will let you know what they say.

What is the distance between the bars on the second floor? I'm thinking about buying the cage. Ty in advance.

Hi, the bar spacing is 1.5cm in both sections of the cage, however the floor which is under the base trays on both the top and bottom level is 2cm. The floors are covered by removable plastic trays so this should not be a problem. I used some heavy items on top of the trays to stop the rats getting under them, a clean house brick or granite slab and a ceramic food bowl placed under platforms so the rats would not fall on them. I would not use this cage for rats under 8 weeks. It is a great cage, the best we have had but it did develop rust after 4 years of use between the top and bottom sections even though we dried it carefully after cleaning and the plastic tray from the lower level had to be replaced twice.

Ty for all. I have 2 degus, maybe this cage is quiet huge for them. I am thinking in this one also, the degus are 2 years old: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJOmkKSrj6Z8a6c; the distance between bars must not be a problem.

I have never kept degus so I am not sure what type of cage is best for them.

I do not think that would work, for safety and security you would be best to build the whole cage as it is intened. When the cage is built you can clip up the ladder between the two levels and just use one level but it is best to add some extra clips to the ladder to keep it in place. I have heard some people say that they keep their animals in the top section and store bedding and toys in the bottom section. But is is a lovely big cage and is intended to give your animals plenty of space to run around and play, so it is better to use the whole cage for your animals.

I don't think you can, there is a bigger version of this cage, the Suite Royale XL.

Yes, the base trays on both levels are non toxic plastic.
