In fact this tune was composed by Giam Batista Pergolesi and introduced in France by the italian lyric singer Albanese. Then under the title "Adieu Paure Carnavas" (Farewell poor carnival), it served to conclude the carnival in Marseille area. In the late 18°th century the melody served for a new very famous song called "Que ne suis je la Fougère" and many composers made variations on it. At last, french TV created a kid broadcasting "Bonne nuit les petits" with this signature tune.

@appl3bit You are right, one version of "Adieu paure Carnavas" was used to shout down the tyran at the fall of Napoléon III reign (1870). The composers who made variations for classical guitar on the theme "Que ne suis je la fougère" were Fernando Sor and Ferdinando Carulli. The original theme by Giam Batista Pergolesi probably was extracted from his opera "La chiave di volta". All the versions are available on You Tube

@appl3bite Thank you very much for the info. Unfortunately I live now in Provence and near the Marseille district. Although I am originated from Reims region where I carried on my University studies and some of my relative still live in that region. Though it is not impossible I'll travel to Reims on the 18th June for this concert during "les flâneries de Reims".

@appl3bite Yes and I like very much Savina Yannatou whose voice is so pure. If you don't know the french singer Françoise Atlan have an hear on her performances and you will understand the relationship between both of them.

@frenchiecocorico1 Thank you very much for the info, i didn't know about it. All I've read is that it was also used to mock Napoleon...

@frenchiecocorico1 Talk about a coincidence - I just found out about her today! Savina is playing on the 18th of June in Les Flâneries Musicales de Reims with the Ensemble Constantinople, and Françoise is playing on the same day, with the same band, just 3 hours before (first concert at 5.30, second at 8.30)!!! Cool huh? Check out the festival's page, if you are a fan of both and you live close, it will be a lucky day for you :-)
