Shay that is a gorgeous piece! I have some punky Pecan here sanding sealer works great!
@BBTurning3 жыл бұрын
It does indeed Jane, it is a handy trick to know. Shay
@glumrvigmadr3 жыл бұрын
It looks awesome. Have you considered stabilising these punky pieces not only for the safety side of the house but to ensure that the piece turns evenly.
@BBTurning3 жыл бұрын
I have indeed. What I was trying to show in the video was how to handle a punky piece with the stuff you probably have. Not everyone has access to the equipment required to do proper stabilisation. Shay

Excellent video. I have a lot of beech in a very similar state. I must try the coffee grounds. I'm with you on the CA pattern, not really my thing.
@BBTurning3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ed, yeah the coffee grounds really work well. Shay

I seem to have turned lot of punky wood over the last months. I mix my own shellac sanding sealer using dewaxed shellac flakes & methylated spirits (denatured alcohol). Lots of thin coats works a treat.
@BBTurning3 жыл бұрын
They do indeed Tee and that's the trick, don't spare it 😁. Shay
@stephanielovatt27872 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that! I tend to try pretty much any wood, which does include some dodgy stuff. Your hints could make quite a difference! Re the other piece of lime wood: If you whack it in half, you might be able to finish off a couple of bowls, avoiding the punky sections, just by changing your orientation.
@BBTurning2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephanie, the other piece was already roughed out so I stuck with it I am afraid. Shay
@cheryldidur23003 жыл бұрын
That turned out so pretty! And great color, as you said. It really shows that there are ways to use wood that is less than perfect and get a great result.
@BBTurning3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Cheryl, the less than perfect wood is often the prettiest. Shay

Great job. Wood that some call trash or garbage are often the most beautiful. You’ve shown that there are ways to salvage most of it. You’re correct to say that there are a few pieces that are just too far gone. Great bowl Shay. Well done.

Thanls Doug and agreed some bad looking pieces can end up the most stunning. Shay

Kávová usadenina a tenké CA lepidlo (tenké super lepidlo). Ak nemôžete získať kávovú usadeninu, môžete použiť jemné piliny. Shay

nice one Shay. I wonder if the CA streaks would work better with a coloured bowl perhaps?

Shay Enjoyed watching!! I agree never give up on a piece unless it gives up on you (as in unsafe) Put it on the shelf and try it another day. The ca effect didn’t work for me either!! But if you don’t try you won’t know. I know what sanding sealer you use is based on your finish! Or am I wrong? Which do you prefer? Cheers Tim.
@BBTurning3 жыл бұрын
I started using that sanding sealer because it is available locally Tim and at this stage i am used to it. It is one of the joys of living in a smallish town in Kerry. You take what you can get. I have not tried another type but it is supposed to work with any type of sanding sealer. Shay
