Hard to find car parts can sometimes be disassembled, cleaned up and put back into use. Lets try to save the Sonett's Clutch slave cylinder without any new parts. Will it work?

I did that to a slave cylinder on a clutch in 1972. It fixed it, too. It was quite a bit smaller than the one you were working on, I think. I was surprised at how small it was because it was attached to an Aston-Martin DB-6, with a 325 horsepower motor. It worked, though. Greatest car I ever drove. I was positive that the slave cylinder would come apart, but it held together.

SAABs of that era used Fichtel and Sachs clutches. I found that a VW throwout bearing was the same part. What you really need is a cross index. When I replaced the 1BBL Solex with the Weber kit and 2BBl manifold, I destroyed my clutch in less that 5k miles and I'm easy on iron. I couldn't get the Stage III competition clutch any more so I went to a clutch guy who refaced my driven disk putting friction material out to the rim where stock was 1/4" shy of the outside of the rim, the most important part. He also shimmed the springs 60thou. to give more pressure. BTW this was back in 1972.

Jack and Patricia Lawrence at MSS has the rebuild kits among other needed parts for the V4 SAABs. They have helped keep my 1973 96 on the road. Thanks for the video!

i always use the same fluid that goes into the system when i need to lube a seal or something just to avoid any possible misshaps with different fluids mixing.

AMESIE a nice relatively cheap way of doing the headlining is some stuff called "superstretch" lining carpet - its really easy to apply, covers the lumps and bumpers, makes imperfections disappear, deadens the interior sound a little and looper smart after! would be great in the roof of the sonnet, would only take 1 tin of high temp and and maybe 3 meters square of the lining carpet

Amesie goes old school ;) Used to do a lot of master, slave and rear brake cylinders. Now hard to get the rebuild kits. I'll get a name-brand kit rather than a Chinese cylinder if I can. Just replaced the stones on my hone. Was amazed to find them still at NAPA. Years of work wore them down and they have flown off a few times as the pins got loose. Made those brake jobs take longer trying to find a wayward stone ;) Easy job. I'll trade that for doing a cocentric slave on my Cherokee (done 3 times.).

Had a '72 Saab le, great car but I replaced exhaust pipes and slave cylinders like oil. Finally the electronics started to give me grief, wouldn't start, I would kick the tire, and voila, start. Finally traded it off. Haven't owned a Saab since. I lived the way it drove and the comfort though.

Nice save, the slave cylinder is abt $100 over here in Sweden, the home country for Saab.
@ytbabbler
@ytbabbler 7 жыл бұрын
+Kvicksilverpuman Yeah, but USA is the home country for many of the parts it was made of. That is why you have a mix of 13mm and 1/2 inch bolts that mess it up.

No Us-parts in a Saab, not that old anyway. The Metric system wasnt standard back then, just mixed up thread systems and the Saab Sonett is based from the Saab 92 and 93 which was from 40 and 50:ies. The Motor is a German Ford and the electric system is English (Lucas who invented darkness)
@ytbabbler
@ytbabbler 7 жыл бұрын
+Kvicksilverpuman Well, there was lot of German and UK parts too. Ford, lucas, Moss Motor and more maybe. But there was parts from USA, Lockheed, Napa, Beck Arnley and maybe more. "Lucas who invented the darkness" What I remember it was a MC owners who said like that when they did the first start each season due to lack of a permanent magnet in Lucas DC generators, it was just to feed some current to the magnet coil for a sec. and it started to charge just fine. And after it mostly worked but worked best if you always had the light on so it charged all the time. I owned a few old Saabs, one Saab 96 with a tuned 17m motor that made over 180 Km/h and was a real sleeper that left the others behind in a dust of smoke.

If its on a separate fluid bottle have u considered using a silicone based brake fluid like the army do in England. They use it on brakes that way it won't soak up moisture and corrode they leave it in for years u would have to flush out the brake fluid first though :-) I think its dot 5? u would not get clutch fade like u might using silicon in the brakes...

Just a word of adivce you may wanna wipe down the spring, as dirt and debris really builds up on that kinda stuff that usually works off of the same principal as what you showed, although probably best to also do that with brake fluid too then if it can cause the seal to break like that if you use normal oil. which I bet 95% of the people who tried this have done, as oil is often the savior of metal in cars.

Nice fix, I like that kind too. Bet that will be just fine for a loooong time. Been watching since you fetched the Saab with Mustie 1 and figured it was time to say hi! However I can't leave without messing with ya. Another local mechanic told me a joke a bit ago which I just gotta pass along. Do you know why they call them Saabs? Because people Saab when you hand them the bill. Sorry I blew up - hope we can be friends yet! Anyway nice video, It's always a good thing to save $$ on repairs!

Some years ago there was a company called Berry Bearing that had catalogs with pictures of seals, bearings,etc. with all the sizes you could get them in. I believe they were bought out by Motion Industries. Most products are designed around standard components like seals and bearings so they are not completely one-off products. That cup seal was probably used in a number of different products.

Too right, I did a little research on the kit for this car. The clutch slave in this case was made by Girling for Saab (or was an off the shelf part) In any case this size clutch slave KIT was used for several vehicles 3/4" bore.

Don't think anyone has produced an O-ring type set like that D-man, leastwise not for the general public and likely not for a long time. I know that Dorman still sells sets of wheel cyl cups of all different sizes, you might could make your own box of cups
