Everyone !!!! Please just use bark chips and maybe some moss. In my experience the soil is what caused the roots to rot. It may be a terrestrial orchid but it still loves airy roots. They naturally grow on rock's , fallen trees, and even sometimes up in trees.

You are very strong girl, I would never be able to deal by myself with such a big heavy pot like that :) I also like your optimism and faith in your plants and working with bear hands, I admire how you keep your hands and nails so nice and clean.

fifi corina Ha ha ha!!! Yea sometimes I don't even know my own strength....LOL! When I look back on my videos I see that I am so intense, focused and on a mission...I even cringe sometimes because it seems like I'm being so rough with the plant...but I just like to work fast and not waste time...LOL! ...check out the other videos...you'll see some where my nail polish in some of them are chipped...LOL!!!

I loved your video! They way you call your plant "she", quick paced, and with lots of info. I've been watching videos while preparing a huge re-potting project. Three big pots of rotting cymbidiums that I inherited from my Grandma. I keep putting off in fear that I might kill them. They are my only living tie to my grandma. Finally, this past year ithe plants are really starting to go down hill I only got 1 spike! In my Grandma's days there would be over 12! I think it's called a spike (the branch with flowers). So, I am at the step where I am removing the bad from the good. Not one video actually says and shows which is which. Until yours, thank you so much I really want you to know how much I valued your info. especially about the rotted bulbs and the roots with the stringy stuff. I can finally move forward with this project. I think I will def. end up getting them to bounce back. I am nervous about shocking it, or burning it with the new media. We will see how it goes.

Arri Castro Thank you so much for your kind comment...your comment really touched me and reminds me that we all have something that we can share and give to others. I am excited to hear about your major repotting project and will make another video in special dedication to you and try to provide some more useful information. I am hoping with all of my heart and am sending you positive vibes and wishes that your Cymbidiums will not only survive but will flourish in loving memory of your grandmother who I know is a very treasured part of your life. May her beautiful memories of who she was and who she is also continue to thrive strongly in your heart and the most deepest most sacred part of your heart. If you don't mind I would like to read your comment with my viewers...I think it is just so touching...and so inspiring...for indeed you have inspired me to continue to make my videos knowing that they can make a difference...I too have a deep reason why I am so passionate about my orchids...it has made me stronger...it's not just a hobby but it is my life's passion and a very important part of who I am...again I thank you so much for sharing such meaningful feedback and I wish you all the love and joy that your life...and your orchids have to offer. Big hugs!

Won't a rusting container, which is a beauty, give the plant too much iron?
@PictureMaria1
@PictureMaria1 7 жыл бұрын
Patricia English it is always a possibility that rust along with minerals, chemicals and other substances can have an effect on orchids/plants. It's always a rule of thumb to keep a watchful eye on your orchids for any signs of decline no matter the container or media. I keep several of my orchids in wire, metal containers and fortunately it has not had any adverse reactions for me.

Hey Maria !! Great video again. Does all cymbidiums require regular soil in the pot ? I have one and I don't have any soil in it. Should I?? thanks girl!!

Buckeye Orchids-by Darrick G. People sometimes use peat moss or potting soil into their medium...but it is not necessary...it's all a matter of your preference...if what you are using works for you and your orchid is growing healthy then there's really no need to change it...unless you just want to try something different. Speaking of which....how is your Cymbidium doing? I know the last time you posted she was spiking left and right...I just posted a video about the spikes on mine...if you get a chance please take a look and give me your opinion on what you think they may be.

...and as a side note...Cymbidiums are actually terrestrial orchids that grow from the ground...but it will not grow well in all soil...and should be a specific soil that is created especially for orchids....and I would still mix it with bark or other medium that will prevent the soil from retaining the water or from becoming to compacted.

Hey! Loved your video, I need some advice. I live in eastern canada, winters are super cold and summers are super humid. I now have 2 cymbidiums that are sick, one of which the roots are 'empty' shelled, dead. And the other seems to have a parasites. I cant put them outside because it's freezing cold out, but they look like if i dont repot them now theyll die. Do you think i should repot them regardless of their growing cycle? Thanks a bunch :)
@PictureMaria1
@PictureMaria1 8 жыл бұрын
...yes...desperate times call for desperate measures. If you keep them in infected media and don't disinfect or treat them it could be the death of them...I think you have a better chance if you react now...the growth may be slow but it still has a chance.

María, is this a Cimbidium? always remember Cimbis likes to be very tight in the pot, don't be hurry to divide, just only if the substrate is in bad condition. ....

Yes you are absolutely correct...and I probably should've waited...I just got anxious to give this orchid a new start...but indeed I more than likely should've waited for it to get stronger and more hardier. This may prove to be a hard lesson learned...but I am remaining positive and hoping for the best...I have to keep a close eye and see what happens...wish me and the little guys and gals luck. :)

@PictureMaria1

Cymbidiums can actually grow in different potting mixes. I bought it from a garage sale and the owners had it in pure soil and is why I had to pot it in medium similar to what they would grow in in nature.

+geion brooks ...yes I had to learn the hard way...this cymbidium has experienced a lot...and has gone through quite an adventure...all three of them are alive and well and very healthy...hoping this year it will be cold enough to trigger her to bloom.
