Crawdads can live in stagnant water. Since they're dying first, I'd say the PH has crashed, due to debris, and the water is acidic.

I think rescuing teeny tiny fish is such a wonderful thing to do. Obviously crawfish are a barometer of water quality. Do you think? 🤔 I think it’s time to invest in a box of vinyl food handling gloves. I dread to think of some of the nasties lurking in some of those waters if they have decaying bodies in them. A pair of gloves might save your gut biome, eh? 😊😊😊😊

GLOVES GLOVES GLOVESSSS I am a nurse. You have to put on gloves you could touch your eye, face. The smallest bit of waste from anything dead- is filling up with gases and turning into straight up nasty ass funky …. I just don’t even have words for the nastiness that could be transferred. Gloves gloves gloves and I’m shocked you DONT have hand sanitizer!! So that and gloves bro! Def wash those hands off. Bring a bucket of clean water for yourself. Your are as important as they are ya know!!! lol. Careful. I’ve seen too many people coming in to the ER bc they didn’t know they could catch- _____ from fishing (in Jersey! Crayfish of any kind breed super easy, so I wouldn't be surprised if those were crayfish that hatched out on their mother's swimmerets in that same fountain. Cause of death could be as simple as someone spraying for insects. Crayfish are super sensitive to any insecticide, and if they were spraying for any kind of bug in the area, that would get the crayfish, even if it wasn't enough to do in the water bugs. Also, if there are enough water bugs in the fountain, they might be the culprits. I know you said something about some of them dissolving, and water bugs put a "venom" into their pray which dissolves them from the inside out. Once the insides become relatively liquid, they extend that long proboscis they have, and use it as a straw to slurp up the hapless creature's innards, leaving just a husk. Sometimes they'll even do that with small fish, especially if the fish are stressed, and can't go anywhere with any speed.
