The Socorro dove is Extinct in the Wild. It was driven to extinction from its home on the island of Socorro, Mexico due to habitat destruction caused by the introduction of sheep to the island in the late 1800s. The sheep overgrazed the island, destroying much of the habitat used by Socorro Dove.
Today Conservation Zoos like London Zoo are revitalising the Socorro dove population, breeding birds under human care for potential responsible release into safe wild habitat in the future.
ZSL with our partners has formed an Extinct in the Wild Alliance to drive the recovery of these most threatened species like Socorro Dove, halting human induced extinction. Many Extinct in the Wild species urgently need our help, we are working to give these species a life beyond extinction, Their survival is only in our hands, no species will be left behind.
