Completely agree- As a biologist & registered lab animal tech, (RLAT) & over 20 years of animal work, sadly it doesn’t seem like there’s a high chance of recovery for this snake, vs. the insane amount of pain & suffering this poor animal has & IS suffering from… humane euthanasia unfortunately may be gently considered. (As a lifelong reptile FANATIC, we herpers know how SLOWLY tissue recovery & regrowth is for our cold-blooded friends, & no matter how HARD we want to help an animal & no matter how long we pray for him/her, reptiles are MASTERS at hiding illness & will occasionally turn up dead for even the most caring & experienced keepers, such as yourselves (Kevin & NERD team). Not that it matters what I think, as I am just a lone no-one, but I respectfully think this animal has been gravely suffering for awhile before you found it, & it will continue experience horrific pain & will experience a very prolonged, painful death from unrecoverable injury & physical trauma. (Sadly, this innocent soul has been dealt a $h1tty hand at life, but we can’t go back in time & right all wrongs & change things & save all of them.) Regardless, as a long-time viewer, it has always been obvious how much you TRULY care about & love animals, & I applaud your efforts & attention given to this poor snake no matter what the outcome…. Who knows… maybe this guy WILL pull through!!🤔😊

I almost had to euthanize a snake. It was a baby garter and a cat got it. It died before I could put it down. I was very sad. I was hoping it was going to be okay but it was weak and I talked to someone and they recommended putting it down. It died in my hands I'm pretty sure. It opened it's mouth a bit and than stopping moving completely. 😢

Join our discord! discord.gg/reptiles - Thank you for your wonderful commentary! This area has a group of rogue people that hunt snakes, turtles, frogs etc with slingshots (wrist Rockets). It was a favorite spot for monster water snakes, racers, garters, turtles and more, all of that changed several years ago. I kept finding dead mutulated snakes that I thought were being beat to death. I met the industrial park owner who told me he caught a group of employees from Boston barricades hunting the animals around the pond with wrist rockets. They would have a person spot the target and ready the others to take shots. He told them to stop it but clearly it has not stopped. I’ve found 7 adult waters at my best in minutes years ago now barely any remain. The procedure notes. I elected to not use the suture needle I would normally use as I was afraid to tug on the tough skin and the syringe penetrated the scales better for me. I think she got 8 stitches and looks far better after than before. If need be, there is a product for wounds called Tegaderm(spelling) that I can wrap around the neck for support etc.. Presently, I’m keeping her clean and dry as she attempts to heal. Today she looks peaceful and alert. I am hopeful she will survive this trauma but realistic she may lack the tissue for a functional throat. I will let you know how it goes. Thank you once again for the support. Kevin

I've been looking out for updates on her all week. Is this a procedure that vets would elect not to do, due to little experience themselves and the chance of survival. Would they most likely euthanase? This is why I appreciate you so much. If there's a chance she can make it, you'll try your hardest. If she doesn't, I imagine already, she's so much more comfortable than she was a week ago. Priscilla is an amazing snake, she never once looked to be in distress or pain. She deserves to get better and deliver her babies

Especially since it hasn't lost its appetite either, he mentioned it taking food and water (even if either just came out of the hole in its throat). I won't hold my breath with this one, but I do still think it has a chance because of its strong will to live and the fact that it seems to be responding to treatment so far and has not shown any sign of systemic infection.

@@remixedcatNo there is not, many people just have a fear of snakes. That fear is no more based in religion than any other of the countless phobias people have. In fact the religious propaganda as you like to call it says not to fear anything, not even death. It says fear is a punishment and not of God and believers will 'handle snakes', it doesn't say they will fear or kill snakes.

I'm so incredibly glad you found this poor snake! She obviously has a great will to live and that should go a long way to help her heal from such a devastating wound. If you find the stitches not holding or there's just not enough flesh left to knit things back together, tilapia skin really can be her saving grace. I have seen it work on a dog with a massive throat wound that didn't have enough skin left to close it (they tried; it went necrotic and busted back open) and it did the trick. I know reptiles aren't dogs, but I believe this would work. If I'm not mistaken, they've used a similar technique on humans, too and it worked for them as well. Thank you so much for rescuing this beautiful girl and not giving up on her when she showed her strength and willingness to live. You're The Man Kevin! The true Reptile and Amphibian Whisperer. This is one of the biggest reasons why I watch your channel, compassion for the animals. Not many people would take the time to do what you do and I am grateful that you do. I made a comment on the Instagram page too. Really needs to be more accountability when it comes to things like this. I know it was probably a bunch of kids, but killing animals without cause is really inhumane. I have a friend that killed a copperhead in his yard and I asked why he didn’t just move the snake. He stated that he was worried about his kids and pets. Now, he also lives in Virginia where they have no laws against killing snakes. The thing is moving a snake with a receptacle is much safer than trying to dispatch the animal. Most snakes are only going to try and flee anyway. If you give them something to flee towards, you can easily relocate without any harm to yourself or the snake. Now, I am rather lucky when it comes to venomous snakes, we don’t have any native populations on Long Island. The thing is, it doesn’t stop me from finding mutilated snakes. It’s not from a lawn mower either, lawn mowers aren’t so precise. I always photograph what I find and share with the local SPCA. I hope that one day the fear based killings will stop, but that doesn’t seem to stop us from killing each other…so all I can do is hope. Keep doing what you’re doing Kevin.🤘🏻

I recall many years ago during a field survey, we captured a juvenile leopard shark in our seine net with a wound to the throat that was about 90% healed, but the lower jaw was still slightly separated. It looked to us like it was caused by some hook-and-line fishing trauma, especially given our proximity to a nearby fishing pier. We were amazed by how much the wound appeared to be healing. And the animal seemed very active and in good overall health. Wildlife can be incredibly resilient!

Hey I have a random bearded dragon question I have a female who is gravid she is a bit overweight she was a big girl I rescued and I'm guessing her overweightness and poor keeping ( prior 2 me getting her) is part of why she is like almost overproducing eggs I mean she hasn't been bred and we're already over 100 infertile eggs this season and she is 3 clutches in she is now getting a sunken in head as well as her eyes being sunken in I can't possibly keep up with the intake of calcium she needs to the eggs she is laying without beyond over feeding her so I've been using flukers repti-boost as it can be used to supplement nutrition and my hope is it has the most balanced diet I can give her (my hope) I am still feeding her her greens and some bugs every other day trying to stick with Dubias (sorry this is so long but I know u r so knowledgeable) now I do provide play sand for her infact I filled the entire bottom of her enclosure with it 100lbs of play sand legit minus a few cup fulls for my bugs lol but she never wants to lay on something like that she loves building her burrows and burying her eggs u wud never know she dug if u didn't know she was doing it anyway I say that Bec I usually let her lay outside at first it started in my flower bed I have a rather large outdoor flower bed in front my house she dug like minimum a 4 foot long burrow and laid 3 of her clutches there but the next time I brought her out to dig as she started looking gravid again she started trying to eat the lil (I think they are pieces of vermiculite) in the soil which I obviously didn't want to let her do now she always tastes the substrate before she picks her ideal spot but knowing her I can usually get it right the first time but she kept trying to eat them so I took her out and put her on the ground I always take them out to get natural sun in the summer time and to show natural behavior but she then tried to eat the lil white rocks that are in my walkway now they are set into the concrete (it's an old walk way) it's making me think she is lacking something but anyway now I brought her back out to dig today Bec she is getting full again and won't use what I have inside and she is trying to dig in my concrete driveway and walkway I pick her up and put her in the flower bed ( I turned all the soil and dug out a burrow just like she likes it wide enough for her fat ass!! Help any clue what this behavior is

That poor snake. I can’t believe it tried to eat but the food came out of his wound. That’s one tough mama. Dr Kevin is doing everything he can to save her life, fingers crossed that she continues to heal. 🤞🤞. Ugh, the end clip😡. Still shows he has ZERO empathy for animals. Just cuz someone says they’ve changed, doesn’t mean they have. Donny I love ur new “office”. Thanks Kevin and Donny 💜☮️

I rescue and rehab bats and I fully understand what you mean by “recognizing the snakes will to live.” There’s many cases where I wish I could ask the animal if it would rather be put to sleep or if it wants to fight. I can’t but I can see it. So in some cases I catch flack because I let a couple of bats live that can no longer fly and one has a leg that broke and healed in a bad position but both these bats are no longer in pain and alive and well. I could see them fighting so I wasn’t about to take that chance away from them. It’s nice to see someone who understands. I really hope your snake is able to pull through this nightmare. The snake gods are definitely with you. No matter what happens.

There are a lot of people who look at water snakes and immediately decide it's a copperhead or a moccasin, and then from that leap to the (insane) conclusion that it will attack them. Even _actual_ copperheads know better than to attack the most dangerous, and potentially the most cruel, animal on earth -- humans.

Also look into zip stiches and medical fish skin. They use medical fish skin for large areas needing tissue grafting in humans. It works amazingly well. If you ever encounter another snake needing extensive care it might be worth it.

Thank you for this, Kevin. I love seeing people care for animals that most wouldn’t bat an eye if the creature was in pain. Every living thing matters and has a will to live. I saw someone rehab a single bee the other day. A single bee! At the end of the day, if we can care for them, why not? I used to love fishing, maybe something is wrong with me but I find myself hurting and feeling so guilty to see the fish and even the worms squirming to get free. When there would be a foul hook I just felt that I could see the pain and confusion in their eyes. I wish more people truly cared about animals. ❤

I am so impressed with how tolerant she is. When I realized you weren’t going to sedate her, I was pretty horrified, but she seems… well. She seems okay. She’s staying still and isn’t freaking out. I’m sure she’s terrified, but she’s with her body language, she’s pretty relaxed? I hope. I hope so much for her. And I have a probably shitty suggestion. Maybe you can try to put like an elastic sleeve around her neck next time she tries to eat? If she will eat with it on, that is. it’ll maybe help to keep the food from pressing out, and can relieve some of the stitching tension? Eh? ((And uh… the best elastic sleeve I can think of is unfortunately either a glove finger or a condom 😅))

Poor sweet girl! Kevin, you truly are an angel among men. Well done, team, for bringing awareness to this horrific 'hobby'. It's ironic that harming animals is one of the three major warning signs in kids for severe mental illness which can possibly lead to homicidal acts in future and yet if someone does shit like this as a fully-functioning adult it's considered a misdemeanor at best and nothing is done about it. How does maturity, awareness, and choice make this situation *less* dangerous?! I hope that this girl is able to recover, please keep us up-to-date, even if the outcome isn't what we want to hear. Also, Donny, any updates on the guys who killed all those retics and the gravid boa in Florida?

Awesome work Kevin! Just a suggestion for the part of her neck that's open, and in case the stitches don't do it completely, get tilapia skin. You can use it by stitching it to the edges of her skin like you would by sewing a patch over a hole in your pants.

This is a great idea! I've seen a vet use tilapia skin to close a severe wound on a dog's throat that didn't have enough skin to close it. I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner. I believe it was Country Vets or something like that. There's a YT video of it.
