Saving Time Sawing Three Logs at Once

Drastic times calls for drastic measures. With more logs than I know what to do with, the time is now to start sawing multiple logs at a time if I ever hope to stay ahead of my red pine thinning plan. With logs mostly the same size, I think I've finally turned a page and can now consistently achieve good cutting while minimizing waste cutting multiple logs at once.

Here in the UK a fence post (4x4, 2700mm) goes for £25. Imagine kerchinging that up each time you took the sides off a toothpick. I doubt any of the critics own their own forest.

I moved my slab rack behind and in line with my mill. That way my slabs are already lined up with the rack, instead of having to turn them 90 degrees. Just a thought. Love your video's

A very efficient use of the logs you have, a very efficient use of your saw, and a very efficient use of your time and energy!!! It's surprising how many uses a person actually has for smaller dimension lumber, and if you never have to buy another 2 x 4, or you can possibly sell some of them, it is still a win!!

This is a great idea. I have a ton of small Red Cedar (juniper) that i plan to use for trim in my house. I was not completely certain I could cut more than one log at a time, but you prove I can.

I had thought of sawing 3 at a time but I get worried it will cost me a blade, I think the trick is keeping them really close in diameter like you did. As for the tooth pick comment I like how you handled that. You got a thick skin Sandy and a great disposition. I find I click like on all your videos just so I can make sure I know which ones I have seen. You always have great content. and I always seem to learn a new trick of the trade every time I watch one of your videos. Final thought I love that you are having fun. This life is not for those who cannot have fun being in the great outdoors playing making saw dust.

All I mill is red cedar and mill up to 4 at a time. Learned that from a old man that owned a mill many years ago. Saw mills won't take anything less than 10 inches yet I mill down to 5 at 4 a time I produce more faster than they can with the big logs. And I get better lumber since a cedar starts lots of rot and bark inclusions at about 8 inches

If you could borrow a skrag mill after first thaw, you could process all the logs at once that you gathered over the winter. That's how it has been getting done with the skinny spruce trees in Eastern Alaska. A lot of similarities with your site.

Should use the chop shop to store some of your equipment in. The weather and the high acidity from the pine needles will be very hard on them. I know because I have a white pine forest. Great videos!

Hello Sandy. You are saving the mill time even though you are still handling the same pieces. Those "toothpicks" as you referred to probably will not gain diameter but will gain height. The same toothpick just got longer. Thinning is the way, and you still end up with product. Have good days!

Another way to get ahead is to leave the logs where they fall, to compost down for the later forest.

To increase productivity more why not invest in a board edger. The cost seems to be in the 4-6k us. Then the sequence would be 1. Add three logs to mill. 2. Cut into 2” boards. 3. Run board through edger to size each 2” board into 2,4,6 or 8” board.

Good afternoon Sandy that was interesting to watch you light of save a little bit of time on the sawing once the log on the mill but how much extra time you spent sorting them out, also you might save a few step but you are young still I am close to my 70's so the big loads are a little strenuous so it would not help me much on that turning your mill around or the area to stack you lumber around and have a roller table would more helpfull you could do all your cuts push everything on the roller table and then move the scrap and the lumber after the log completed al the way just a thought have a great day and the main thing keep making dust with a smile

Hey Sandy … on the far end of your sawmill , I have seen homemade bracket with a bottle jack mounted and it was used a leveling tool. Worth a try . Everyone has an extra bottle jack laying around in garage .lol. Love your videos . As always. Craig Pa.

Hi Bob. Yeah it was getting covered up pretty good with dust. I’ve been meaning to hang it up on the post there. For now I’m not using it but periodically I use it to charge the sawmill battery

Looks more efficient for sure. Did you need to rotate the logs one last time at the 10.00 mark? Looked like you could keep cutting from there, leaving 3 barked slabs from the last cut.

Good question. Only reason I rotated them again is they were 4.5" x 4 and so I needed the 4.5" side up and down so I could get the 1.5" thick lumber

I found id get slightly wavy lumber cutting 3, i think it was from the sawdust jamming up the gullets of the blade. Have you noticed anything like that.

The main reason it can be a little challenging I find is the logs can roll a little bit if not clamped real tight but I think I've got it figured out now

You might get bugs and worms under the bark of your live edge slabs where they are outside. they will bore holes in your wood. Insects will lay eggs on the bark.

You want saw three of my logs at a time I don’t think you could saw one of them on that little mill I have only sawed three today and I have a stack of 700 board ft of lumber the smaller one was 32 inch on the small end I would say that the but cut was 45 inches but it’s all 1x12x16 now and when it drys for 6 months it will be my out side of my cabin that I’m building but good show and have a great day and God Bless Y’all up there it’s back in the 90s down here already and that’s when I have to change clothes twice a day 😅😅😮

It was one tree and I cut three 16 ft logs out of it and the top was 32 inches the but was over 45 but I saw a lot of big trees because that's what I have here in the swamps of south Alabama and North West Florida I'm pretty much on the line and it is the best of two worlds I can go 50 miles south and I'm in the Gulf are go another direction and be at a river or big lake but I'm to old for the beach I like to do a little fishing now and then but I like working on my land and seeing what I can make from the swamp and land it is a lot more fun to me two pull a big red cypress sniker out of the swamp and see what it has in side it you never know it like box of candies you never know what you have till you open it up and look but it is a lot of work to find out God Bless Y'all and stay safe up there the fly's are out down here and you have to remember to put the deep woods off on before you go to the swamp they're bad this year

Generally sawing more than o e log at a time don't work the best If you got a group of logs almost exactly the same diameter it can work but sorting logs to match up 4nds up taking as much time as sawing them one at a time
