Tony, I have saved the seeds from almost anything I have purchased at the local greengrocer. Over the years, I have grown almost all of them the following year. One year I had so many cantaloupes from a single fruit that I had to give many of them away rather than have them decay before I could eat them. I used methods of harvesting and preservation very close to the types you showed in your video. You explain the different processes very naturally. Thank you for your great works.

So far I have seeds saved from flax (for linen production), several tomato varieties, cucumbers, potatoes, popcorn, several types of beans, and squash of all kinds. With the sudden change of weather from summer immediately to winter here in Western Canada, I think that may be about all I can save this year.

Thank you! I am in my first year of having room for a garden so planning now for saving seed from all I have planted (mostly heirloom varieties I was given by other local gardeners). Figured that way I can spend my budget next year on other varieties I was unable to find this year. Also plan to save enough to share and trade with other gardeners 🥰

This year I have grown seed collected from Gardener’s Delight. Last year the greenhouse was shared with Piccolo. The plants have been super productive with very long vines. The tomatoes are amazing and a bit larger than either of the afore mentioned varieties so I assume the bees have created a new variety. I shall see next year if they breed true. Piccolo lacked hardiness but the hybrids are quite hardy.I need to look up Mendel’s law. With chicken breeding the first cross is consistent, after that all sorts of variations happen.

I grew up in Ireland in the 60’s and when they planted the potatoes they first used to cut the potatoes in 3 or 4 pieces leaving a few eyes on each and them dip the cut sides in ash to prevent rot I assume I guess this was to save on the storage of the seed potatoes.over winter I don’t remember that side of things

Basil and flowers mostly. Most flows are easy to figure out if you start tearing them apart and looking back at what the original seed looked like. The basil grew flower stalks and turned brown. I’ve yet to get the seeds out of the stalks, but they are cut and in a bag. I’m hoping it’s just as easy as shake, shake, shake.

Great video, Tony, as always. It's always good seeing someone trying to educated the masses on proper seed storage. I always try saving seeds from previous crops. Though my problem is I nearly always forget to label them, so then I'm planing a surprise crop of heirloom tomatoes, or some random type of greens. Luckily we aren't too picky when it comes to eating what we grow...lol.. That said, I've got to go through my seed box and make sure everything is labeled for next year, I'm trying a more targeted approach in the next year. Thanks for the reminder...LOL

Onions: I bought onions from the store. I cut off the bottom 1/4 and peel the dry skin. I put the bottom piece on top of potting soil and just water it and let it do it’s thing. A couple weeks ago I mixed ash with the soil and the onions seemed to like that. I kept seeds from a few different peppers. They are in baggies waiting for spring. I have store bought potatoes. Any that sprout eyes get used for seed potatoes. I plan on saving seeds from my tomato plant and from a pie pumpkin I got at the store. I also have a couple squashes I bought that I’ll save seeds from.

Inspired by yourself and The Real Seed Company Tony. These are my main annual crops. Tomatoes this year were all F1 (I'm using up a massive backlog of tomato seeds from the cover of three years worth of gardening magazines!) and seed potatoes I buy as part of a bulk order with the Allotment Association. Everything else is perennials or a yearly whim until I find something I really love.

Next year I will be looking for good broad bean and runner bean varieties that I can keep. I also keep sweet corn Special Swiss but I am aware that I will need to refresh my seeds in a year or two because I don't grow the quantity of plants to keep the strain vigorous enough.

The main thing is the way you change location during what you are saying. The easy option would be to just stand in place, camera on the tripod and record. Much easier to edit....but also less engaging.
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 6 жыл бұрын
Chillichump I started doing that for loads of reason, firstly to keep it moving so that there are always changes it helps with retention, it also helps with remembering what to say as you only need a couple of paragraphs and thats easy enough to remember what you want to say, allows you to cut the ums out and so forth. It does make the dit much much harder but more than worth it. Filming takes 10 times longer too

I tried a new squash delicatta. Once I tried it I thought wow, this is so much better than acorn squash. So I saved some seeds and planted them not thinking they grow. Surprised that they grew more squash the next year, now I’m using the same seeds for another crop a year later. Thanks.

Thank you for your informative, well-made video, Tony and your calm peaceful personality and delivery of the information. I've heard a vacuum sealer is an extra step folks can take to suck the air out of jars or plastic bags to help preserve the seeds, then into the freezer they go.

I have most of my seeds for next year already put up; squash (winter and summer), gourds, pumpkins, melons, cucumbers, several types of tomatoes, kohl crops, lettuces, carrots, onions, beans, peas, corn, potatoes, etc. I will have to order my little marvel peas in order to get the amount I want without it costing a small fortune for the small packets they offer in the stores here. I will be ordering some more winter and summer squash so that I can try some new varieties. I am waiting for my sweet potatoes to mature so that I can harvest them. I am planting my fall and winter garden of lettuce, root, and kohl crops. I am almost ready for next year's gardening. I do save a few hybrid tomato seeds just to see what they produce. If I like the results I save the seed and hope for the same or better results next year. If I don't like it I pull them up and plant something else. Much Love

Another great video Tony. It was your experiment of growing potatoes in pots that convinced me to try pots rather yhan straight in the ground. In thd video you said that keeping your large potatoes for growing as they held the DNA for large potatoes. If you want to replant the large potstoes for a large potatoe crop is it ok to cut the potatoes so that you are planting maybe a quarter of the potatoe with an eye to get 4 large potstoe croping plants from a single potatoe. Thanks John

John the large potato seed is really if your growing one tuber for size, if you liked the size of the potatoes I was holding out of the buckets they were grown from the egg sized, It is ok to keep bigger spuds and cut them up providing you have shoots on each part

With potatoes when i first start for the season I buy a bag of reg store bought potatoes, let a few of them grow eyes to about 3 to 4 inches and plant them, then I repeat with the potatoes that I grow from my store bought potatoes. Sometimes I will repeat with indoor grow bags during winter and sometimes ill just buy a bag of potatoes LOL.. The 1st of last month I bought Mini Potatoes for the first time planted 3 of them 1 went bad 2 is growing very nicely that already is growing tiny potatoes.:) What ever works, :) . I'm not buying potato seeds that cost more than a bag of reg potatoes at the store to get started.

Last year's chilli pepper seeds completely failed to germinate this year (which is a pity given how great the weather would have been for them), so I've had to start again from scratch. I sowed a dozen seeds in August, of which eight have come up, with the intent of getting a head start on next year (the tub will stay indoors, in my best lit window over winter). Come February or March I'll sow a dozen more and see how the two groups work out. I haven't split them across years before now, but I reckon it's worth trying since they are not actually an annual. When it comes to seed-saving I like to keep seeds for two years. Whatever amount I choose to sow, it consists two-thirds from last year's seeds and one-third from the previous year. I usually only save seed from the two best plants of the year (very easy to determine with chillis, of course). I've been doing this for 15 years and this year was the first where this belt-and-braces method failed me.

I think small silica bags or other moisture absorbers would be good for keeping your dry seeds dry. Not sure if it would work with potatoes. Maybe storing in sand or sawdust.

I lost an entire crop of Red Russian Hard neck Garlic so I rummaged up 1 clove that I let the scape grow and then planted the bulbials last spring . I stored the very small garlic bulbs in the frig until this fall and then planted them again. I should get full sized garlic bulb from each original bulbial. Sometimes starting over is rough. If I had it to do all over again I'd purchase the full sized bulbs and plant them knowing I saved 1 to 2 years of process and using garden space.

Great videos thank you for dedicating your time to help other gardeners. I saw a video on KZbin that showed a very simple way of collecting Tomato seeds. It literally was to put the seeds on to paper towels separately, no prior soaking, then fold up the towel and store. Next spring just open up the paper towel, cut each seed out and plant it with the piece of towel. I have had great success, anyone else tried this?
