Tony, I have saved the seeds from almost anything I have purchased at the local greengrocer. Over the years, I have grown almost all of them the following year. One year I had so many cantaloupes from a single fruit that I had to give many of them away rather than have them decay before I could eat them. I used methods of harvesting and preservation very close to the types you showed in your video. You explain the different processes very naturally. Thank you for your great works.

This year I have grown seed collected from Gardener’s Delight. Last year the greenhouse was shared with Piccolo. The plants have been super productive with very long vines. The tomatoes are amazing and a bit larger than either of the afore mentioned varieties so I assume the bees have created a new variety. I shall see next year if they breed true. Piccolo lacked hardiness but the hybrids are quite hardy.I need to look up Mendel’s law. With chicken breeding the first cross is consistent, after that all sorts of variations happen.

Basil and flowers mostly. Most flows are easy to figure out if you start tearing them apart and looking back at what the original seed looked like. The basil grew flower stalks and turned brown. Great video, Tony, as always. It's always good seeing someone trying to educated the masses on proper seed storage. I always try saving seeds from previous crops. Though my problem is I nearly always forget to label them, so then I'm planing a surprise crop of heirloom tomatoes, or some random type of greens. Luckily we aren't too picky when it comes to eating what we grow...lol.. That said, I've got to go through my seed box and make sure everything is labeled for next year, I'm trying a more targeted approach in the next year. Thanks for the reminder...LOL

Onions: I bought onions from the store. I cut off the bottom 1/4 and peel the dry skin. I put the bottom piece on top of potting soil and just water it and let it do it’s thing. A couple weeks ago I mixed ash with the soil and the onions seemed to like that. I kept seeds from a few different peppers. They are in baggies waiting for spring. I have store bought potatoes. Any that sprout eyes get used for seed potatoes. I plan on saving seeds from my tomato plant and from a pie pumpkin I got at the store. I also have a couple squashes I bought that I’ll save seeds from.

@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
Chillichump Thats great, We all learn from eachother. What exactly have you picked up?

The main thing is the way you change location during what you are saying. The easy option would be to just stand in place, camera on the tripod and record. Much easier to edit....but also less engaging.
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
Chillichump I started doing that for loads of reason, firstly to keep it moving so that there are always changes it helps with retention, it also helps with remembering what to say as you only need a couple of paragraphs and thats easy enough to remember what you want to say, allows you to cut the ums out and so forth. It does make the dit much much harder but more than worth it. Filming takes 10 times longer too

I am planting my fall and winter garden of lettuce, root, and kohl crops. I am almost ready for next year's gardening. I do save a few hybrid tomato seeds just to see what they produce. Last year's chilli pepper seeds completely failed to germinate this year (which is a pity given how great the weather would have been for them), so I've had to start again from scratch. I sowed a dozen seeds in August, of which eight have come up, with the intent of getting a head start on next year (the tub will stay indoors, in my best lit window over winter). Come February or March I'll sow a dozen more and see how the two groups work out. I haven't split them across years before now, but I reckon it's worth trying since they are not actually an annual. When it comes to seed-saving I like to keep seeds for two years. Whatever amount I choose to sow, it consists two-thirds from last year's seeds and one-third from the previous year. I usually only save seed from the two best plants of the year (very easy to determine with chillis, of course). I've been doing this for 15 years and this year was the first where this belt-and-braces method failed me.

Can I use a dehydrator to dry out seeds ?
@psycophonic6 жыл бұрын
I think small silica bags or other moisture absorbers would be good for keeping your dry seeds dry. Not sure if it would work with potatoes. Maybe storing in sand or sawdust.

Thats a great idea about the silica bags. I am sure the community will love that golden nugget. Thanks

My in laws used to save theirs in "shelves" that were more like angled drawers with sand in them. Their carrots were in damp sand though.

@@simplifygardening no probs dude. Hope it helps some1. P.s. not really my own idea. Came from an SHTF prepper channel when he was talking about storing freeze dried food (or rice etc) for long storage in mylar bags.

@@edieboudreau9637 damp sand is interesting, you'd think they'd rot. Unless it kept 'em moist enought so they dont go limp. Either way, nice 1.
@edieboudreau96376 жыл бұрын
F*rking C*ntainers edit: yes keeps them from going limp as in dark cool place. The carrots need moisture not too much or little.

… I have a question regarding tomato seeds … if I leave a tomato on my kitchen counter too long, the seeds actually start to germinate inside the tomato … how would I keep them going ? … should I remove them from the tomato and put into potting soil ? … thanks!

I lost an entire crop of Red Russian Hard neck Garlic so I rummaged up 1 clove that I let the scape grow and then planted the bulbials last spring . I stored the very small garlic bulbs in the frig until this fall and then planted them again. I should get full sized garlic bulb from each original bulbial. Sometimes starting over is rough. If I had it to do all over again I'd purchase the full sized bulbs and plant them knowing I saved 1 to 2 years of process and using garden space.

Great videos thank you for dedicating your time to help other gardeners. I saw a video on KZbin that showed a very simple way of collecting Tomato seeds. It literally was to put the seeds on to paper towels separately, no prior soaking, then fold up the towel and store. Next spring just open up the paper towel, cut each seed out and plant it with the piece of towel. I have had great success, anyone else tried this?

0:18 what kind of grain is that behind you? Ive never tried growning grain because I have very little space and have always assumed to get a decent yield of any grain you would need a lot of plants.
