Here's when jokes are ok to make: when the people targeted by that joke are not experiencing real life discrimination and hardship based on the stereotypes addressed in said joke. But when real people are suffering and you further reinforce a given stereotype in the cultural consciousness that's when jokes are in extremely poor taste and may in fact be actively harmful to people. You wouldn't make a joke about jews while they were being genocided and you shouldn't make jokes about racial stereotypes that are still used to discriminate against people today. Jokes are never "just jokes" they inform the cultural narrative, what is said in jest for long enough may eventually become accepted "fact" especially since many people who use those jokes actually really believe what they said and use the joke pretense to hide actual prejudice and make it palatable for delivery to a mainstream audience, to sneak their otherwise socially unacceptable views in under the radar. Just my two cents. This doesn't mean you should be punished or stopped from making them. You should choose for yourself to refrain out of respect and social responsibility from such insensitive jokes.

@@reav3rtm I'm fairly sure it's based on a plethora of issues, including settlements, but not just that. For example, certain factions will refuse peace even after several annihilation battles and massive odds against them, but others will be incredibly eager to fight and go back to peace at a moment's notice. I think the main calculation is based off of the priority of the AI (whether or not it deems you an existential threat or just wants a certain patch of land), the other threats it faces, and a calculation of your cities and armies against theirs, minus a little to make up for any troops diverted against other enemies.

I remember buying this when pc games were physical and in the big boxes :) the music still gets me. Part of why I went to grad school for ancient history is a combo of this game and Gladiator. Rome 1 still ranks as my favorite total war. I mean, it came with a map I framed for my bedroom I loved it so much :D newer total war titles need to follow its example with general speeches, map reflecting terrain on campaign, etc.

I do not understand 'cheesy tactics' people. Like old saying goes - 'everything if fair in love and war'. You do anything you can to win and more if you are to survive. If people find that cheesy then by all means they should not play this at all.

This is one of the many many reasons why medieval 2 is better than all total war games that came after it. It's why old rpgs with interesting quirks you can abuse are better than new ones where it's all so goddamn "streamlined" aka mediocre.

The Duke of Wellington famously used the Noob Box tactic to beat Napoleon on the battle of Waterloo (which wasn't even fought by Waterloo incidently that was just where the Iron Duke had his HQ). So using Cheesy tactics are a well established tradition from rl. Also Marius basically used cheesy defensive tactics at Aquae Sextiae that basically was corner camping, and the sarmatians where deploying horse arches against legend at the battle of rome, Horse Archers are defenitly the most cheesy unit there is. Also in Rome TW the AI cheese you, they'll cycle sally out when you're besigning them and not even borther to come out there wall, so you'll spend 5 fucking hours on doing nothing battles because the AI is fustrating you.

When you are in near hopeless situations such as all as the LegendsofTotalWar campaign rescues cheesy tactics are the only way to stave off otherwise inevitable defeat. Fighting fairly or 'honorably' means that you have alreadly have surrerend yourself to defeat.

There are records of those chariots ballista, but they might not be as good as they were in the game. Mainly cos it might have been need to dismount the ballista to use it like house drawn artillery rather than on the chariot shooting on the move. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carroballista

Sarmatian cav is much much better preforming. Its actually some of the best cav in bi, just due to their speed. In terms of effectiveness cheap berber camels and cav (atleast on 12,5k) > Ere Cilibanarii > sarmatian aux > sassanid cataphracts. Other mvp units for rome; plumbaratii (Lots of pila; lots of range) they are so good you should build your army araund them; bring 2-3 units of shit spears to sceen infront. First cohorts; keep these guys in reserve / to guard flanks or rear (they will hold for a long period against anything) and when the plumbarati are out of ammo just send them in to cut down what remains. To make it extra crispy you can then take the plumbarati back -> out on the sides and flank with them.

it's possible that in time of necessity chariots from Circus (roman hippodromes ) were used as emergency roman war chariots, but there weren't so much. The main reason is that cavalry was more effective and less costly.

RE. the historical accuracy of Carriage Ballistae. They are one of those "maybe so" units, there's vague historical references to light artillery that could be moved by carriage on the battlefield, but the real problem is whether or not they could have been used as essentially super-heavy horse archers or if the maneuvering was just to keep pace with the infantry. As for their lack of inclusion in TW:A, including them would mean the Romans would have a unit that's good, and that was a no go for that game lol. Well except Tagmata cav, but that doesn't help till the late game.

You should start recruiting stronger ships and then use them to hunt down pirates. Save your biremes for transport duties and keep your proper warships nearby also you only need 1 brieme pre transport fleet.

Love this series Legends. But i gotta ask, how you manage to get such a good performance on rome 1. I can barely get 10-15 fps in a battle with more than 20 units, much worse in siege battles. I can play all the latest total war games at at least high settings with decent frames, so i have to wonder if you are simply lucky or deliberately did something to make your game run smoother.

Id recommend removing shadows and foliage. Theres also a setting for "special effects" like dust and fire. Those were the onrs I turned off as the shadows in this game are really fucking ugly and so is the foliage and special effects.

If you want to keep up the public order in the citys that are safe, recruit some peasants :) Public order doesn't depend on the kind of troops that are in the city, but just on troops BEING in the city :)

Hello friends, can someone give their opinions on Empire vs Napoleon total war? If anyone who’s played both could tell me anything concerning which have one has more bugs, how good or poor the AI is, in general depth of campaign, and how smooth the games play overall, I’d really appreciate it. I enjoy line warfare, so any period related issues won’t be a problem. P.S. there’s a Total War sale on steam this weekend incase anyone else is interested.

Napoleon is undoubtably the best of the two, but I'd say if you are really interested in that type of warfare buy Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai, it's portrayal of Line Infantry warfare is far more competent than either!

To provide some context: Empire has the better map, encompassing almost all the world, and probably the best colonial experience but far inferior combat, graphics Napoleon is a vastly improved Empire but limited to Europe, which is perfectly fine in my book FOTS is brilliant at all of these, especially given the context and tying in how you build your clan and armies in regards to it (the fast modernisation and industrialisation of Japan having consequences)

Francisco Maia if i had captured the city the vandals would have become a horde again, even though their last family member would have died. They would get new ones. I had to destroy the faction first which mean i had to lose the battle.
