*Hey Guys, Rome Total War has become exceedingly painful to record lately. You'll notice the beginning has some skipped audio. It should hopefully only be at the start during the intro and it wasn't that important. I'm trying to find work arounds to stop this from happening but both of my recording softwares hate recording Rome Total War and crashes all the time. I'll try find a fix in future*

There is actually a parameter in unit stats defining whether it’s a peasant blob, somewhat trained unit tripping up when moving in formation, or an elite badasses keeping formation at all times (at least it’s how it works in MedII, I’m assuming it works the same in RTW since it’s the same engine)

It was my first VH/VH from years ago, I opened it up recently to try fix it myself and messed up, then realised it would be a laugh to see if Legend would try. Glad he managed to do it, been years in the making, to my shame

Cavalry was insanely OP in RTW. To the point where infantry was completely unnecessary for every faction. There was basically nothing you couldn't beat with 12-14 units of cheap cavalry. Let alone actual good cavalry.

1:00:51 Put your field army on the bridge, cut off the Gaulic army from Patavium. Meanwhile siege Patavium with one or so obsolete units. End turn, Gauls attack you at the bridge, total eradication. The Gauls throw off you siege at Patavium, put it on again. They pursue, crush them with your hyper-mobile cavalry field army and return to the bridge to await the Gauls suiciding themselves all over again.

Just a quick question. Why don't you use the wedge formation? Is it because it leads to more casulties of your own or because the it's a smaller point of impact when clashing with the enemies?

I imagine he could've gotten through the enemy lines with wedge more easily. Maybe not, that's why I asked.

Hello Legend! Have you tried your luck at the Battle Tournaments of RTW Alexander? I think thats the most challenging experience that the original RTW/M2TW can get you, although the Alexander campaign is very challenging by itself

It was not a general unit in this battle, so there were no morale boosts for bodyguards.

@@rankevius that's technically not correct. There can be only 1 general unit per army. The other family member bodyguards unit counts as a usual cavalry, not gaining any morale boost from second family member command abilities.

Legend it is wonderful to see posting RTW and MW2TW content recently - I love to watch your pre-recorded videos on these games and Shogun 2 - I know that you need to stream and make Warhammer content and if that is good for you and your channel go for it. I will just have to keep an eye out for your content that I like the best and learn to appreciate it when it does appear. One small issue though - did I miss you saying "Horse sandwich ……" in this episode? If so how was that possible with a cav spam? ps SYDC with huge debt or not are fine I will watch Rome, Rome 2 - maybe Attilla, Med War 2, Shogun 2 and DLCs and mods of the same. Cheers.

It’s great for the initial charge. But once the charge effect is gone, the horsemen at the front are more vulnerable and killed easier than they would be in regular box formation. Unlike in later TW games, Rome 1’s combat engine lets multiple soldiers attack one enemy soldier at the same time. So wedge formation can get your soldiers killed quickly if you don’t pull them out of combat once the charge is done. It’s a risk-reward balance.

Goes to show how absurd the difficulty penalties are when Hastati are getting killed by peasants. I get they are your tier 1 infantry but _nothing_ should lose straight up to peasants.

You have no idea; Hastati are not just Tier 1 infantry, they are absolute monsters, only differing from Principes by TWO ARMOR POINTS, from 17 to 19 Hastati are literal gods of early game, and tbh VH is basically required to struggle in Julii campaign, which explains problems of the OP I guess

Go into graphics settings in main menu, and change unit size to largest. You have to start a new campaign for it to work
