I think how quickly technology and other factors have changed society so quickly is a big cause of people finding their IRL father figures more lacking. A lot of IRL father figures have no idea about the problems kids are facing (online harassment, student loans etc.) and the world their kids live in general. In the old days (like, before WW2) it was much easier to give advice to your kids because the world you lived in was basically the same. Personally, I think being aware of the world kids live in is part of a parent's responsibility, but I'm aware that's not easy. Then again, being a parent is never easy.

Very true. I see a lot of people dismiss their kids interests as "the new fad" or some weird internet stuff. It's important to them! How is your kid supposed to look up to you if you can't look up to them by enjoying what they enjoy? And as you say, if you don't even try to understand them by understanding their world, then how are you supposed to help them? They might not even want to confide with you.

dude I have been watching your docs for awhile really nice to see these things discussed publicly. I never really had a father, he was a drunkard and now he's making up for lost time but the abuse means I am not willing to just let some man into my life like that. I found a lot of help in the stoics. People who lived in a time without all of the crap we have now but it still resonates. I really have seen a lot of creators willfully not stand for their ideals. I feel like there's something to be said about the generational gap between the parents of zoomers and zoomers. Technology and culture has changed to an unrecognizable degree since the 70's, as has the job market. I grew up with my parents and the people around me pushing for academic and collegiate success. I went to a very rigorous high school and I almost failed out. I was depressed, anxious, physically sick and tired of my life. It took the advice of online father figures like Peterson and Goggins in particular for me to wake up and accept responsibility for finding my own path. I can see now that I'm nowhere near where I need to be, but at least I've been granted perspective and I've taken big steps towards rectifying the serious health issues that have plagued me for a long time. Responsibility is everything. Sometimes all people need is someone to tell them that their life matters, and they're throwing it away.

This really gets me thinking a lot. My father is overweight, lazy, and thinks that if he’s loud he controls the house. He’s the opposite of everything I want to be, KZbin has been the biggest escape for me and has basically raised me my entire life. I honestly think one of the biggest reasons for this is the boomer dad stereotype. I feel like the next generation may have parents that can connect more with their kids as they grew up in a similar technological age.
@Colddirector
@Colddirector 3 жыл бұрын
I honestly doubt that. I’m approaching the age most people become parents and I already feel like I don’t understand the younger generation all that well. Social media was still very much in its infancy when I was in high school, avoiding online harassment was as easy as just not making yourself a target, either by being anonymous or just not having an account. Im not sure that’s really an option for younger kids these days, since anonymity has largely gone down the tubes and social media is less of a new trend and more a standard.

Nevermind that by destroying the family you can tax single moms and their baby daddies too.
@LancesArmorStriking

@@TheUnnamedAssailant That's not quite true. Plenty of civilizations before ours were more egalitarian (in the sense that men did not dominate the family, nor did the singular idea of a 'family' exist). I do agree with the idea that divide and conquer is a useful strategy, but the 'mother + father + children' model is very new. In the past, it was the whole tribe that raised all the children at the same time. Father figures are very important, but they don't need to be the biological father. In fact, insisting on that leaves boys with abusive parents stuck with no easy way out.
@TheUnnamedAssailant

@@LancesArmorStriking if your talking about the hunter gather civilizations or tribal villages then yeah I agree. Those tribal groups while varied with family members and occasional strangers are relatively small, but more intimate then the neighborhood or cul de sacs we live in now. In those areas you can trust the people within those tribes because you interact with them so much, by contrast, would you really say you’d trust any and all the neighbors in your building or block? While agree that the child feeling forced to stay in a home with a potentially abusive parent could lead to terrible repercussions for the child, you could just easily say the same if not more so for adults that have no blood ties to the child and have even less reason to be empathetic to the child’s worry or concerns.

That experience makes me want to do everything I can to become someone that others can look to when they need help. The concept of making a "father figure" out of someone who doesn't even know me seems a bit parasocial to me so I don't really do it. However, I definitely would name a few people who I'd nominate for that position were it to be a more comfortable prospect, like Louis Rossman for his off the cuff but poignant rants and ruminations about life as well as general life advice, jschlatt's theweeklyslap for the reframing of complex life problems into an easily digestible set of suggestions for how to deal with them, and Jerma985 for his seemingly pure and good-natured desire to make people happy by entertaining them somehow, even if it's at the expense of his own ego. These are people who don't know me, will never meet me, etc. so I wouldn't call them "father figures" but they certainly give me the comfort of one. I always just saw it in my head as people who are good at a craft or have an experienced perspective with things whom I respect as you would any human being that was good at something, not straight up family members. When you frame it this way though I guess they do give me the comfort of one I suppose. Humanity was not ready for the internet, man.

@@likira111 You feel how you feel. Supposition is me telling you how you ought to feel. That's not what's happened here - that's the simple answer. How do you feel? That's the real question here amigo, at least, for you. People don't talk about this stuff in person, but the it's very well studied in scientific literature of psychology. Perhaps that's a more extensive body of knowledge to research? All I can really discuss is my personal experiences. The lack of a father can mean you're free to idealise your own concepts of masculinity- which is often either naive and unachievable, destructive and arrogant - or completely lost to escapist media. Two examples are: becoming a heroic soldier, or becoming a notorious thug. Both are considerably more likely as life paths for men without fathers. In a sense we either fear our inner monsters to the point of paralysis, let them run riot - or best case scenario - become a monster bound by our better nature, 'til need arise. Purpose is important. Maybe you relate, maybe you don't. Maybe this is helpful, maybe not. It all depends on you and your unique circumstances.

My father abused me for years, on and off. He invaded the good moments of my childhood and forever ingrained the pain I felt because of him into the happy memories I felt. Due to that I turned to both my older sister and my older brother, they're about 10-13 years older than me but for a long time they were in the same boat as me. You see, my siblings watched their father die right in front of them. Their father drowned in their pool when they were both young enough for it to effect them for life but old enough for them to process what happened. We all grew up without a father figure, my brother used religion as an escape and used Jesus as a father figure meanwhile my sister turned to dating and sex to drown her sorrows. My mother turned to drugs as an escape. All of these things I consider vices, obviously sex and drugs but using a moral authority to ease your own mind comes with detriments as well. I've learned that using vice to escape from your emotions never ends well but neither does taking one person's word as absolute and living your life by that message, it may comfort or motivate you in the short term but at least in my eyes you stifle your ability to learn from the world on your own terms as that can only come from a place of self motivation. I can fully understand the lack of self motivation and drive to simply live that many people, and especially men, feel today. If you do not have things in life you are passionate about and wish to live simply because you are apathetic to life or simply are too afraid to die life appears meaningless and purposeless. But in the end I see that as the most liberating thing, when nothing in life gives you purpose you have free reign to search for and find whatever will give you purpose. All in all I wouldn't let someone tell you how to find the purpose and motivation in your life nor what that purpose should be, however this is not a burden as you may see it, you are the master of your own destiny and the only one who can truly control your thoughts and actions. Of course this sounds hypocritical, if you wish to find purpose through another so be it as I cannot control you nor can I control your thoughts but I hope you can at least understand my perspective and how trying to search for a father figure only harmed my outlook on life. That is not to say that you shouldn't look to these people for guidance, many of these people have excellent things to say and to add but in my eyes they will not endow your life with purpose nor meaning.

Not invalidating what you've said however My understanding about this subject is that people that older and diferent than those similar one may have life experience that could help one. It's desired that these people want to be good influence (even in their mistakes) and that oneself is a good learner. a balance of one and others Mostly because i'm skeptical at people's ability to create good meaning on their own without a good observation of others. Of witch to me seems to be the case in your experience

I am finding myself through positive figures of inspiration, like Peterson, Goggins, Alan Watts, Russell Brand. Previous generations couldn't even have that opportunity, they were limited to what their immediate family environment provided, that may not have been so beneficial to their development. Halo was the greatest selling franchise of any video game EVER, but is perfectly contrasted with "The Father Figure" (Rogan) telling us how he has a problem with video games in general. They expect you to "grow up", because they believe "that's just what men do".. and to an extent, they are right! We, men, are able to fight through the most disgusting, toilsome, and degrading things this world has to offer. Think D-Day, The Great Depression, Sparta, etc. The difference from those times and now, is the return of investment. You WOULD be rewarded if you laid your life down for your country/community. There is not much of an incentive to do these things now; especially for young men... but that doesn't mean we get to stop being men. We shouldn't, and can't, let ourselves stop "fighting forward". Jordan Peterson talks about adopting responsibility for our actions, and how that shapes our mentality of the world... he is right. I was also born into a family with rampant mental illness, divorce, poverty... but these things can be your greatest assets. It is imperative that you reshape the way you view these things, so that they do not become excuses to stop trying... That they become reasons to keep pushing. And once you have conquered that mountain, young men will look up at you, and you can tell them with confidence to "Keeping moving!" and they wont question you. You only asked them to do something you have already done... so why cant they? I believe in you, lil homie.. Never give up.

Sick video! One of those guys thinking about this for a long time as well. My Dad never lived up to my expectations, expectations based on ideas he never saw himself. But ultimately I learned to not hate him for that. The fact that I saw a better way, meant that I had a responsibility to do better myself. It's difficult for even me to learn those lessons, let alone him, who never grew up in a time like ours of near limitless access to information. Now I see that Dads pass on their lessons, but also their mistakes so we can continue their role of making the world better.

Although my father was always present, and a strong influence in my life, he (and I) often stumble when talking about meaning and purpose so unapologetically as Peterson does. My father was less of a father and more of 18 year long babysitter who worked everyday and left me alone at home and other events/activities, he didn't abuse nor traumatized me but he was definitely not a role model to look up to. One thing I would give him was that he unintentionally taught me the human experience and individualism by constantly letting me down when I was younger to the point when I reached middle school I stopped caring about his or my mom's approval. I never fell into the "Online Father Figure" thing because I never yearned for a father or role model, everything I learned from life was from pure observation and trial and error experiences. But video was interesting.

You're absolutely spot on. With myself, I'd felt depressed and purposeless from age 13 to 27. Only a couple of years ago I realised why and it was because I hadn't been truthful and I was suffering as a result. I'm not afraid to say what I believe now. The traditional male and father figure as so brilliantly shown with your family is seen as awful, a thing of the past and part of the patriarchy. I realised that was all a lie - I feel that to be my true way of being and if people don't like that, so be it. As a result I've met an amazing woman where a future can develop, and in the right way, and it was only possible to meet that person because I first admitted that I was wrong to myself, then I aimed to do good, and it's been amazing ever since 👍. The part where your dad said that his dad "did the best that he could" is I think the key to it all. It doesn't mean he was perfect, or didn't have any things he did wrong - he did the best that he could do. That acceptance and forgiveness allows the man to move on and be able to carve out that new world for himself from nothing, invite a good woman into that world, and eventually bring children into it. How can you be depressed with that.

Sometimes the uncertainty of life can be so debilitating that you feel helpless in going in any direction that is a positive one. I know I've felt like this many times, especially in the last year. There's a quote that I heard which I really like: "pick up the biggest rock you can find, and carry it. " I'm still struggling to figure out which rock I should be carrying, but building on accomplishment I think is the goal, so that you feel more confident picking up even bigger rocks (if that makes sense). I didnt have a great mother, was very absent and too young to be wise and a parental figure, and I never met my father. I started finding a lot of interviews of women and men that I admired and had traits I admired and I would try to emulate them, and listen to them talk when it was particularly bad. I feel like it helped me have more control over what I was shaped into. Coincidentally, I found i watch all the father figure type people you listed very often. Also, I'd like to hear more about how having an absent father affects women other than people joking about women having daddy issues when they sleep around. True those are the generalizations. That women without fathers are promiscuous. That men without fathers are weak and have low moral character.

I can tell a lot of heart and soul went into this video, I really do empathize with op, but I can’t help but feel alienated. I lost my father in my early teens. My brothers and I have had to cope in different ways, I try to be there for them as much as a sibling can. This sort of experience has been a contributing factor in my wanting to foster and/or adopt in the future. It’s like Ratatouille: Not everyone can be a great role model, but a great role model can come from anywhere. When people like Peterson talk about fatherlessness and the importance of male role models, there’s usually this implication that women are insufficient in this role, this essentialist notion that women can’t posess ”male” wisdom and vice versa. Thing is, ”fatherlessness” can apply to vastly different demographics with their own socioeconomic struggles: Single-parent households, children in foster care, those with same-sex parents etc. They’re not actually that comparable. For instance, most studies show children with two same-sex parents fare about as well as those growing up with a mother and father. So how much is actually about gender and how much is about stable households and role models over all? P.S. I don’t subscribe to Peterson’s rhetoric anymore because he’s aspoused some borderline fascist ideas when attempting to deduce the causes and solutions to societal problems. He creates this us vs them mentality where *certain types of people* (”the foreign” and ”the feminine”) are sources of chaos, unlike the ”masculine” forces of law and order. It’s very disturbing when you dig deeper.

@@doodelli I agree with this comment so much. I was raised by a single mother and although I guess lacked some typical "masculine" traits during adolescence traits that a father could've provided, I still managed to grow up with confidence and high emotional intelligence because of her (she also acts very stereotypically masculine occasionally too). I feel most people see things in gendered terms when being human is waaaaaay more nuanced.

@@doodelli That is basically a complete refutation of everything this video was trying to say on the basis of, "But why can't women be dads and mothers and siblings and friends to their children, all at the same time?" Some types of people are better equipped to teach some lessons over others. This 'Anything you can do I can do better' bullshit woman always do when 2 men start talking to each over about literally anything is the very reason a generation of mothers have failed their sons, you insist too much of yourself. Let men learn what manhood is from other men you control freak, you lack critical perspective. When you do you raise unproductive, drifting men who value their emotional intelligence over purposeful direction in life. Mothers are vastly important, stop trying to muscle fathers out of the equation.

Your videos are purposeful. Every single one. A feat not easy to accomplish. Thank you for reminding me to grow and be strong as our fathers did before us. Hopefully with spirits like ours, we can be the good men needed in these bad times.

As someone who has grown up without a father and was more or less raised by the internet and is out of uni without a male authority figure this video really and genuinely cut to the core of me. I know it's vain but with inclusions of men that I look up to, references to Halo and my favourite artist, Kanye West, it almost feels like this was made for me. It's my 21st birthday today and I sobbed watching this. I don't know the last time I cried but this video made me cry so fucking hard. I felt vulnerable. I felt cold. I don't know what I'm meant to do in this life. I don't know where to find guidance.

The most practical advice I could give you is this: find a craftsman. Someone who works with their hands, whose work takes time and effort to create. Ask that person if you can take an apprenticeship under him. Those long hours spent learning from him and speaking to him, while not a perfect analogue to having a father (how would I know lol, mine wasn't super involved in my upbringing), it is an opportunity to learn from a male figure consistently in your life. Ideally, have it be someone who's connected to your family, or circle of friends. But anyone will do, as long as those circumstances are met. ^I should know, that's where I got a lot of my morals from. I love my bio dad, but he wasn't around enough to teach me how to be a man.

@@LancesArmorStriking This is solid advice from my pov as well. The comfort of virtual reality is tempting but if you follow the path of craftsmanship you will see value in real objects coming from your hands. And maybe more. Best of luck, lad!

What wish are you referring to? The vid was about "father figures" not the guy who caused you to exist. I mean they can be one and the same, hope they are for anyone reading this, but it sounds like in your case they weren't, or were and then he ceased to be a father figure.

The Halo theme still gives me so much goosebumps. Yes. I want to become a hero in real life and I encourage you all to become a hero yourself. We can do it! We might not become MasterChief in strengh, but we can become MasterChief in mentality and spirit! Slay the dragon.

I really like this Glink. I like the fact that you’re having this conversation. It’s cool that you included your family in the video. We all need to find a way to fill this gap in our lives. Some of us need to try to be father figures for those who don’t have them as well. It may not be big. It may just be you being present. My dad passed away 9 years ago and my two youngest brothers were still grade school and Junior high age. I moved back home a while back and my presence has been an encouraging influence on them. I was able to help my one brother get a job and get going in life when he wasn’t doing anything after high school. Now he has goals and he’s pushing himself and is well respected by his managers at his job.
