For a pretty pepper that tastes good. Forms a small bush. Try Aji Charapita. I got mine From baker creek. The round orange peppers were really pretty on the plant And tasted good. Spicy and fruity. I froze them in a pint container to cook with. But the plant itself was attractive too. Could be planted anywhere

Hi Mark, great harvest! How do you keep the critters at bay so they don't use your garden as their smorgasbord? I've addressed the deer, but it's the squirrels, chipmunks, and raccoons that I don't know what to do about!
@marksgardenlife5971
@marksgardenlife5971 2 жыл бұрын
Hey BH! I was surprised at the size of the harvest. I've been lucky so far with the garden and pest. It does have a fence surrounding it with wire fence attached to the wood fence. I did have a family of rabbits raised in the garden last year, but I left them alone. The mother dug a hole under the wire to get in and out. I figured after all the work she went to, leave her be. I have a lot of squirrels down around the house, but they haven't made their way to the garden and if the raccoons have climbed the fence, I haven't noticed any damage yet. Thanks for watching/commenting! All my best, -Mark

Welcome back. Your insights and guidance are needed now more than ever as we enter these increasing times of food shortage and costs. About 10 years ago I observed the Back To Eden gardening method. I got the power line company to drop all their regional chips in a field next to my gardens. Over two years I covered the soil to about 8 inches depth. The first couple of years I would have to dig down through the chips to rich original soil in order to plant. But on the Gulf Coast chips pretty much totally decompose in 2 to 3 years. I had about 8 truck loads sitting to one side when I finished and over four years, they went from seven feet high to 2 feet as they rotted to worm cast black gold. That I use in my hoop houses and raised beds. I was lucky enough to become friends with a tree service again and they are now dropping loads when working near here. I will continue to get them till I have no space to dump more. I do raised beds, hoop houses, greenhouse, permaculture and traditional row beds. The past two years I have taught three families to grow a large portion of their own food, and this year many more are asking for guidance on how to garden in the deep south. Last year I began adding the JADAM methods to fertilizing and pest control and initial results are good. This year I will be doing comparison gardening to my past methods and JADAM. With the loss of commercial fertilizer from the market JADAM may become a life saver.

Hi there! I would recommend almost any type of habanero for production and vigor. If you're looking for fruit size, the hot sunset hybrid was a good one for me this year. There are also some large cayenne's out there that would probably be a good fit. If you can find a good open pollinated variety that you like, grow the seed out yourself (make sure you isolate it by like 800ft or so, or by some other means of avoiding cross pollination) and continue this over several seasons... If you save the seeds from only the best plants year after year, you will evolve the genes into a strain that is best suited for your exact growing conditions. I hope this helps. Good luck to you Clive! Thanks for reaching out! -Mark

Hey Mark - great video as always. I had only two small pepper plants this year - one Anaheim chili and one jalapeno that they gave me a great fall harvest. Ended up making chili rellenos with the Anaheims and then a lot of salsa with the jalapenos and gifted the rest. I ended up not pulling out my plants and they are still producing - being in AZ, I guess I could do that. My question for you is do you keep your pepper plants. I heard they have a shallow root system and you can actually trim them back to the the first "Y" in the stem and dig them up and pot them and then replant in the Spring. Just wondering if you ever tried this. I wish I had the space to do so many varieties of peppers!

I did this with a seasonally swampy area on my property about 3+yrs ago. some areas are 3ft thick. My soil before was hard clay. The earth worms are back, the chips are all black now but still look like a chip. The ones at the top are sun bleached and didnt rot well but that's fine with me. I planted norway spruce in there for a visual barrier to my neighbors.

When drying these peppers do you cut them open? I have sometimes the problem that some of the thicker ones with more flesh can develop mold inside while drying...

Hi Henning! I have heard of cutting them open, but I find that high airflow and low heat works pretty well. Sometimes mold happens to some, I think the best way to avoid this completely is to use a food dehydrator. Best, -Mark

Thanks for sharing Mark, the Jamaican hot chocolate was one of the peppers I grew up on. You dear not act like you want to use too much of it, just a small piece will give you all the heat that you need. My family uses spices alot, it is said that Indians love spicy food and so this is why even at a tender age my taste buds got accustomed to the flavor of those peppers.

Great video as usual, always educational with that welcoming vibe. For those who are able to do what gives them joy, cherish it. Down this side in Trinidad we grow a lot of HOT- scotch bonnets, habanero, congo peppers ,scorpion peppers, bird pepper (it grows wild in the garden), jalapenjo and some other hot ones. We love the heat, if not seasoning food with it, in many dishes we place a whole half ripe congo pepper in the pot just give that spicy caribbean flavour, many are made into hot flavourful pepper sauces, or we roast them served as a condiment with "Doubles" one of our amazing street side foods. In the non Hot bracket Pimento peppers ( an absolutely great seasoning pepper) , bell peppers and sweet peppers. So your pepper choices have peaked my curiosity, will try to grow the "Lemon drop" and maybe the "banana pepper" hopefully I get that kind of yield. Thanks Mark ! Happy Gardening .

Another good video. Nice looking harvest! Looking forward to hearing what you are growing this season. For hotter peppers, I am trying a mix (for fun), my usual poblano and sugar rush peach. Monster Gum Peach Leopard, cubanelle. Ordered some seeds from Finland for the Sugar Rush Stripey, hope I actually receive them... I don't have much of a taste for raw hot peppers (I am a baby), but I am expanding my tolerance for heat by making some hotter dishes. I hope you do a video of how you make hot sauce, I think a lot of people would love to see that process. Thanks again, Mark.

Hello Mark, nice pepper harvest. Just last night I pulled out some I'd dehydrated to use in pasta sauce. Unfortunately I'd mislabeled what I expected to have been a mix of sweet chocolate and Marconi Rosso. They were cayene and Jalapeños which made the sauce a lil bit spicy but still pretty flavorful. Those are the hottest I grow and will eat. Take care
